Download or read book Wonderlandscape written by John Clayton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yellowstone is America's premier national park. Today is often a byword for conservation, natural beauty, and a way for everyone to enjoy the great outdoors. But it was not always this way. Wonderlandscape presents a new perspective on Yellowstone, the emotions various natural wonders and attractions evoke, and how this explains the park's relationship to America as a whole.Whether it is artists or naturalists, entrepreneurs or pop-culture icons, each character in the story of Yellowstone ends up reflecting and redefining the park for the values of its era. For example, when Ernest Thompson Seton wanted to observe bears in 1897, his adventures highlighted the way the park transformed from a set of geological oddities to a wildlife sanctuary, reflecting a nation was concerned about disappearing populations of bison and other species. Subsequent eras added Rooseveltian masculinity, ecosystem science, and artistic inspiration as core Yellowstone hallmarks. As the National Park system enters its second century, Wonderlandscape allows us to reflect on the values and heritage that Yellowstone alone has come to represent—how it will shape the America's relationship with her land for generations to come.

She recently came to Colorado, reeling after her divorce from FBI agent Diego McCullough. Then the museum’s statues of historic people, including Nathan Kendall, begin to talk to her, and she knows it’s time to call her ex-husband. Diego heads to Estes Park, determined to solve the bizarre case that threatens Scarlet’s life—and to reunite with the woman he never stopped loving.
Download or read book Philadelphia Stories written by Samuel Otter and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-02 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Philadelphia Stories, Samuel Otter finds literary value, historical significance, and political urgency in a sequence of texts written in and about Philadelphia between the Constitution and the Civil War. Historians such as Gary B. Nash and Julie Winch have chronicled the distinctive social and political space of early national Philadelphia. Yet while individual writers such as Charles Brockden Brown, Edgar Allan Poe, and George Lippard have been linked to Philadelphia, no sustained attempt has been made to understand these figures, and many others, as writing in a tradition tied to the city's history. The site of William Penn's "Holy Experiment" in religious toleration and representative government and of national Declaration and Constitution, near the border between slavery and freedom, Philadelphia was home to one of the largest and most influential "free" African American communities in the United States. The city was seen by residents and observers as the laboratory for a social experiment with international consequences. Philadelphia would be the stage on which racial character would be tested and a possible future for the United States after slavery would be played out. It would be the arena in which various residents would or would not demonstrate their capacities to participate in the nation's civic and political life. Otter argues that the Philadelphia "experiment" (the term used in the nineteenth-century) produced a largely unacknowledged literary tradition of peculiar forms and intensities, in which verbal performance and social behavior assumed the weight of race and nation.

This benefaction is ever fleeting and obtained more as a result of predestination or accident rather than one's personal endeavors or abilities. The struggle is very complex. The participants are not even aware that the gift exists. In fact all who reach this height do so without conscious effort. However, the consolation to those who fall short is also quite rewarding. Book excerpt: A grandmother’s love is forever in Star People, a picture book about remembrance and tradition from S. D. Nelson, award-winning author and member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. “A young Lakota Indian girl narrates the story of how she and her little brother, Young Wolf, survive a prairie fire.” —School Library Journal “A stirring, original story based on Lakota legend . . . The swirling images of the celestial dance beautifully reflect the story’s celebration and awe of the natural world.” —Booklist Sister Girl and her brother, Young Wolf, wander away from their village and soon find themselves far out in the surrounding prairie. They sit down in the grass and watch the clouds passing above billow to form an eagle, horses, and other creatures. We sat in the dry, sweet-smelling grass, watching the clouds drift overhead. Young Wolf pointed and said, “Sister Girl, that cloud looks like a buffalo’s head!” We both laughed with amazement. “There’s an eagle,” I cried! Suddenly, animals begin to race past the children on the ground—followed by a wall of fire! Fleeing along with the frightened beasts, Sister Girl and Young Wolf save themselves by tumbling into a shallow stream. The fire leaves behind ash and a barren, forbidding landscape. The children realize that they are hopelessly lost. Night is coming—how will they get home to their parents? And why are the evening stars dancing so? Drawing upon traditional Lakota ledger book art, S. D. Nelson’s illustrations bring to life a memorable new legend about the Star People.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating account of the century-long effort to define, access, preserve, develop, and exploit the uniquely beautiful area of rugged wilderness now known as Strathcona Provincial Park on Central Vancouver Island. Strathcona Provincial Park is situated in the middle of Vancouver Island, bordering Clayoquot Sound on the west, Port Alberni on the south, and a large property once known as the Esquimalt and Nanaimo (E&N) land grant on the east. Measuring 250,000 hectares, this breathtaking park, with its gorgeous mountains, lakes, and waterfalls, is a nature lover's paradise. Yet behind this picture of serenity lies a volatile history. A Journey Back to Nature: A History of Strathcona Provincial Park takes a comprehensive look at this rich, beautiful stretch of wilderness and the competing interests that struggled to protect it, define it, and/or control it—from Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on the land for millennia, to European explorers and industrialists, who could not see beyond the wealth of its natural resources, to early conservationists and enterprising settlers, who wished to preserve the area as a wilderness playground for BC's booming population and nascent tourist industry. Over the course of a century, Strathcona Provincial Park was frequently at the centre of some of the most heated public debates in BC history, between economic and environmental interests. This detailed account—lavishly illustrated with archival and contemporary photographs and maps—uncovers the intriguing history, complex legacy, and majestic natural beauty of BC's first provincial park.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adsits Poetry Anthology, Volume I presents a collection of three generations of American poetry from the Adsit family, written by Tim Adsit, his parents, and his grandmother. This unique anthology contains inspirational poetry with recurring themes focusing on wilderness, the nature of man, family, home, love, life, death, faith, patriotism, country, humor, and emotions, as well as personal thoughts and reflections gained while outdoors hunting, hiking, camping, and fishing. With these inspiring thoughts and poetic images, the Adsit family brings us immediately into the beautiful world of nature and human nature. Relaxed, warmly intimate, and sometimes humorous, these verses reveal the inspiring world of nature that provides insight into what we are as human beings; what attitudes and beliefs we should take toward life, its Creator, death, and faith; and the way in which we should mature and develop daily in wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and humility. Each poet at once sees connections between the creatures and situations in nature, and in the opportunities in our own lives. They each have a genuine gift for discovering and presenting new ideas in refreshing ways showing that there is a stillness in nature that speaks louder than a choir of voices.
