Book excerpt: Explore the remarkable discoveries in the rapidly expanding field of plasmid biology Plasmids are integral to biological research as models for innumerable mechanisms of living cells, as tools for creating the most diverse therapies, and as crucial helpers for understanding the dissemination of microbial populations. Their role in virulence and antibiotic resistance, together with the generalization of "omics" disciplines, has recently ignited a new wave of interest in plasmids. This comprehensive book contains a series of expertly written chapters focused on plasmid biology, mechanistic details of plasmid function, and the increased utilization of plasmids in biotechnology and pharmacology that has occurred in the past decade. Plasmids: Biology and Impact in Biotechnology and Discovery serves as an invaluable reference for researchers in the wide range of fields and disciplines that utilize plasmids and can also be used as a textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in biotechnology and molecular biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gilbert S. Omenn Dean, School of Public Health and Community Medicine University of Washington Seattle, Washington 98195 On behalf of the University of Washington , the City of Seattle, the Steering Committee, and the sponsoring agencies, corporations, and organ izations, I welcome you. \Ve all expect this Conference to stimulate further what is becoming an important application of biotechnology in an area in which our society experiences considerable frustration and gloom: the management of hazardous wastes. It is an all-too-frequent refrain that technology has its benefits and its risks. To many--in the lay pUblic, at least--the damaging notion has taken hold that we are capable of creating problems but are less capable of finding solutions. Chemical streams from industry, agriculture, municipal operations, and household operations have contaminated groundwater, drinking water, and soils, and have undermined the productivity of agri culture and the quality of life. In the meantime, however, we have im proved our quality of life in immeasurable ways through some related developments. The challenge is to continue the enhancements while modifying or preventing the damage.

Book Prokaryotic Structure and Function

    Book Details:
  • Author : Society for General Microbiology. Symposium
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1992-02-20
  • ISBN : 9780521415705

Download or read book Prokaryotic Structure and Function written by Society for General Microbiology. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-02-20 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the increasing wealth of knowledge that has accumulated concerning the regulation of synthesis and assembly of structural components of the bacterial cell. It is now possible in many cases to trace the exact sequence of events triggered by a change in the physical or chemical environment of a bacterial cell, for instance, signaling, gene expression, transport of the gene product to its correct location, and assembly into a functional structure. The scope of this volume is broad, ranging from the organization of the nuclear material itself to the sequence of events leading to differentiation and development; from the synthesis of intracellular storage material to the assembly of specialized photosynthetic membranes, periplasmic electron transfer chains, and heat-resistant spores.

Download or read book Bacterial Conjugation written by D.B. Clewell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacterial plasmids originating in a wide range of genera are being studied from a variety of perspectives in hundreds of laboratories around the globe. These elements are well known for carrying "special" genes that confer important survival properties, frequently neces sary under atypical conditions. Classic examples of plasmid-borne genes are those provid ing bacterial resistance to toxic substances such as antibiotics, metal ions, and bacte riophage. Often included are those determining bacteriocins, which may give the bacterium an advantage in a highly competitive environment. Genes offering metabolic alternatives to the cell under nutritionally stressed conditions are also commonly found on plasmids, as are determinants important to colonization and pathogenesis. It is likely that in many, if not most, cases plasmids and their passenger determinants represent DNA acquired recently by their bacterial hosts, and it is the characteristic mobility of these elements that enables their efficient establishment in new bacterial cells by the process known as conjugation. Whereas many plasmids are fully capable of promoting their own conjugal transfer, others move only with help from coresident elements. The ability of a plasmid to establish itself in a variety of different species is com mon, and recent studies have shown that transfer can in some cases occur from bacterial cells to eukaryotes such as yeast.
