  • Author : Francesca Merlan
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1991-03-29
  • ISBN : 0521323398
  • Pages : 406 pages

Download or read book Ku Waru written by Francesca Merlan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-03-29 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highlanders of New Guinea are renowned for their elaborate systems of ceremonial exchange. Although much has been written about them, previous accounts have concentrated far less on the conduct of exchange events than on the structure of exchange systems. This 1991 book deals centrally with the conduct of particular exchange events, and shows through examination of them how larger social structures are reproduced and transformed. As part of the emphasis on exchange as social action, the book closely examines the oratory that plays a crucial part in the events. Basing their study on original fieldwork carried out in the Nebilyer Valley, Francesca Merlan and Alan Rumsey focus on an inter related set of large-scale compensation payments which arose out of an episode of warfare. This book furthers our understanding of the interaction between social structures and historical events; and particularly of the crucial role of talk. It will be of special interest to anthropologists and linguists.

  • ISBN : 1513528505
  • Pages : 106 pages

Download or read book South Africa written by International Monetary Fund. African Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2019 Article IV Consultation with South Africa discusses that subdued private investment and exports, and increased uncertainty have depressed growth and worsened social indicators. State-owned enterprises’ (SOEs) risks are materializing, triggering government bailouts of Eskom and administrative intervention in other entities. High fiscal deficits have boosted debt. Nonresident investors are shedding equities and local currency bonds but showing appetite for foreign currency sovereign bonds amid supportive global financing conditions. The external position is moderately weaker than implied by fundamentals and desirable policies. Inflation has slowed to around the mid-point of the target band, aided by one-off factors, but inflation expectations are higher. Banks are sound, albeit with pockets of vulnerabilities. In the absence of fiscal space, a gradual and growth-friendly fiscal consolidation and increased spending efficiency are needed. The authorities should establish a credible debt anchor to stabilize debt in the medium term. Given the structural nature of the growth slowdown, the consolidation should be accompanied by reforms that reduce the cost of doing business and boost private investment.

Book Haunting Memories

Download or read book Haunting Memories written by B. W. Van Riper and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oh, no the anguished cry rang out. For a sister and her brothers, it was terrible newsof a death in the familythe death that left them dumbfounded. Broken hearted, here they were, a grand family suddenly bereft of a great part. It made no sense. Sorry to inform you, the awful words struck like a thunderbolt. Mom and dad had crashed on their vacation trip. So unfair, so unreal, so jarringso final. All the siblings could think of was how much love was lost to them. Their parents were the linchpins; they were the finest; they were the most revered. At a loss due to a loss. So much love and affection was denied them in an unpredictable moment. What was to become of them? Mom with her daily wisdom. Dad with his usual counsel. Mom with her laugh. Dad with his wry humor. Mom with her catering and caring. Dad with his hugs and counsel. What will they do without them? The sister and her husband, the brothers and their wives, succumbed to the pain, weakening them. Where would the strength come from that was required to survive such a tragedy? When ravaged by happenstance, What holds the family together when hope and promise lose some of their dash? In the moments of crisis, inevitably, people are hanging on by hanging tough. That courage comes from their heritage, which is the real force, the saving grace. Its not just what they have inherited in family lore, but the bond that ties endowment and legacy together in a triumvirate that can spark the spirit. Haunting Memories says something about how desire can influence perception; by allowingor causingus to see what we want to see. We wonder when theyre gone, Did we do enough for them? Did we express our love and affection often enough? Were we good to them? We arent going to be able to answer yes to all such questions without some reservation. Because were never going to think weve done all that we could have or should have done for our loved ones. We cant get our minds off them. We cant let them go. We want them back. But we cant have them back. They are where they are. And we cant get there from here.

Book Urban Schools

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mickey Lauria
  • Publisher : Peter Lang
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 9780820440484
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Urban Schools written by Mickey Lauria and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Schools documents the quality of resistance and identity politics in relation to both the formal and hidden curricula of urban schools, their pedagogical practices, and their administrative norms and policies. Building on the notion that the study of «marginality» is equally as important as an understanding of the school's structural connections to the wider society, Mickey Lauria and Luis F. Mirón demonstrate how resistance is much more than a random series of psychological events. Indeed, within the social context of the formation of racial and ethnic identity in schools in New Orleans, Louisiana, students' acts of resistance alter the ideological structures of schooling.
