Download or read book Maine s Museums Art Oddities Artifacts written by Janet Mendelsohn and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinctly Maine: Active Shakers, ice harvesting, a museum on wheels, and more! The first book devoted solely to the diverse and often unexpected museums in the Pine Tree State, Maine’s Museums: Art, Oddities & Artifacts showcases a broad range of art, history, maritime, children’s, and unusual museums. With world-class collections of fine art by past and contemporary masters as well as the true stories of people and industries that helped shape the state and the nation, Maine’s museums invite visitors to indulge their curiosities and passions to learn about lighthouses, whales, antique cars, seashore trolleys, sardine canning, and folk art. They open our eyes to how Native Americans, shipbuilders, fishermen, lumbermen, Civil War soldiers, artists, and immigrants all had a hand in developing the state. They inspire children to discover the world and they reopen more than one Victorian-era cabinet of curiosities. Whether you want to see great works of art or truly unique collections—from umbrella covers to strange creatures—you’ll find it in Maine and you’ll find it in Maine’s Museums.

Book excerpt: Unknown Museums of Upstate New York is an informative and entertaining guide to the rich resources available at fifty small, often overlooked, regional museums. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paranormal has long been a hotly contested topic, especially in academia. Most people are entertained by the paranormal or casually read a few books they come across on the topic, perhaps assuming that these topics are nothing more than campfire fodder. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with being entertained by the paranormal, but how many people know that there is a long history of academic, scientific, and credible research into topics such as extrasensory perception, hauntings, poltergeists, cryptozoological sightings, near-death experiences, and more? In Researching the Paranormal, Courtney M. Block provides an overview of paranormal research and introduces readers to an assortment of resources that seriously examine various paranormal topics. She shows readers how to think critically about paranormal sources and how to apply the components of credibility when conducting their own paranormal investigations. Highlighting the long history of serious, academic inquiry into various paranormal topics, Block provides citations to primary source documents, journal articles, helpful databases, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and books. In addition, she provides a historical overview of various paranormal phenomena such as parapsychology, cryptozoology, ufology, divination, ghosts, hauntings, and more.

Book The Politics of Collecting

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eunsong Kim
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2024-06-24
  • ISBN : 1478059478
  • Pages : 207 pages

Download or read book The Politics of Collecting written by Eunsong Kim and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-24 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Politics of Collecting, Eunsong Kim traces how racial capitalism and colonialism situated the rise of US museum collections and conceptual art forms. Investigating historical legal and property claims, she argues that regimes of expropriation—rather than merit or good taste—are responsible for popular ideas of formal innovation and artistic genius. In doing so, she details how Marcel Duchamp’s canonization has more to do with his patron’s donations to museums than it does the quality of Duchamp’s work, and uncovers the racialized and financialized logic behind the Archive of New Poetry’s collecting practices. Ranging from the conception of philanthropy devised by the robber barons of the late nineteenth century to ongoing digitization projects, Kim provides a new history of contemporary art that accounts for the complicated entanglement of race, capital, and labor behind storied art institutions and artists. Drawing on history, theory, and economics, Kim challenges received notions of artistic success and talent and calls for a new vision of art beyond the cultural institution.

Book Wendy Turner

  • Author : Wendy Turner
  • Publisher : Portsmouth Historical Society
  • Release : 2016-04-01

  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book Wendy Turner written by Wendy Turner and published by Portsmouth Historical Society. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wendy Turner's paintings of the Maine and New Hampshire coast, from the Schoodic Point to the Isles of Shoals, done over a period of thirty-five years, demonstrate the range and talent of this artist who lives and works in Kittery Point, Maine. While often based on the plants, water, rocks, sky, and sea life of the Seacoast in terms of their subject matter, her watercolor and oil paintings have an ineffable quality that elevates them from depictions of nature to transcendent and sublime works of art. This book follows her work through various transitions in her career, starting with her delicate watercolor images of tide pools. Over time, her focus moved from images taken along the beach, to beautiful garden studies, and then moving on to her large tour-de-force rock and wave paintings. For the last ten years, oils have been Turner's primary medium, and her technique has taken on a looser, more direct style. While still focusing on her first love, the edge of the ocean, her newer work balances realism with a love for abstract shapes and energetic brushstrokes.Turner's close-up studies of rocks and reflections show the quiet, more reflective side of the coast in contrast to her larger, dynamic rock and water images. Other works include macro views of colorful lobster pots. The focus on texture and detail turns a common object into an interestingly abstract and fascinating image. A goal Turner has for her paintings in this image-overloaded world is to transport the viewers, to hold their minds and attention for a moment of calm, before moving on.Turner's career is explored here in an essay by the noted art historian Carl Little and in more personal reflections by Catherine Armsden and Mekeel McBride. Illustrated with more than one hundred color plates, Wendy Turner ~ Island Light, published to accompany a major exhibition held at Discover Portsmouth in the summer of 2016, is the first monograph on this important American artist's career.

Book excerpt: In spite of all the papers that others have written about the manuscript, there is no complete survey of all the approaches, ideas, background information and analytic studies that have accumulated over the nearly fifty-five years since the manuscript was discovered by Wilfrid M. Voynich in 1912. This report pulls together all the information the author could obtain from all the sources she has examined, and to present it in an orderly fashion. The resulting survey will provide a firm basis upon which other students may build their work, whether they seek to decipher the text or simply to learn more about the problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passionate Curiosities explores the collections held in the University of Michigan's Kelsey Museum of Archaeology through the lens of the people whose intellectual interests, financial backing, and social networks brought artifacts to Ann Arbor from the 1880s to the 1990s. Through purchases and expeditions, these individuals shaped the Museum's internationally recognized antiquities from the ancient civilizations of Greece, Rome, North Africa, Egypt, and the Near East, extensive photographic documentation of these regions from the early 1900s, and significant assemblages of early Christian and Islamic visual culture. An intriguing array of personalities--from archaeologists, missionaries, and diplomats to industrialists, bankrollers, and inventors--weave through these pages. They include Ernst Herzfeld, the eminent Orientalist who helped forge antiquities legislation in Iran; Luigi Cesnola, the rapacious harvester of Cypriot sites; Esther Van Deman, the pioneering feminist and scholar of Roman construction techniques; and Samuel Goudsmit, the renowned nuclear physicist and avid Egyptologist. World-famous dealers who established standards in antiquities connoisseurship likewise populate these sagas. Readers will encounter Edgar J. Banks, a swashbuckling purveyor of Mesopotamian antiquities and entrepreneur of biblical documentary films; Maurice Nahman, the "lion of Cairo"; and the colorful members of the Tano dealer dynasty in Egypt. This copiously illustrated book will interest general readers as well as scholars curious about the holdings of the Kelsey, early collectors and dealers, and the history of museums.
