Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maine Book Part 11 covers the social and industrial development including the organization, extension, development and services of the various state departments, executive and administrative. It is fitting in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred twenty and in the one hundredth anniversary of our statehood that these facts should be collected and placed in form for the use not only of the general reader and student of history but for our schools also. The out lines of state history contained herein will form the basis of intelligent research among the sources of history themselves. The students in our schools during the centennial year should seek in their own localities the early landmarks of history, old buildings, places where interesting and important events occurred, the families of first settlers, original docu ments, records, etc. In such a project this publication will be of inestimable value. Book Documentary History of the State of Maine Vol 13 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Documentary History of the State of Maine Vol 13 Classic Reprint written by Maine Historical Society and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Documentary History of the State of Maine, Vol. 13 This volume contains correspondence of Thomas Pownall, whose prudent administration of affairs during his incumbency of the important office of Royal Governor of Massachusetts entitles him to an honorable place in our colonial history. The publication of Charles A. W. Pownall's recent book "Thomas Pownall, M.P. F.R.S. Governor of Massachusetts Bay etc. etc., 1722-1805," in which he makes a notable addition to the controversy respecting the authorship of the Junius letters, which he believes should be ascribed to the Governor, will lend to this correspondence increased interest. A comparison of the hand writing of Governor Pownall with that of Junius strongly supports the claim of his kinsman, and we are obliged to pass unquestioned his assertion that the Governor's knowledge of political conditions especially fitted him for writing them. He says, "That no place in the province which this Governor worked so hard for while there, and had so deep an affection for always, derives its name from him. What is now Dresden on the Kennebec river, in the region which his expeditions opened for settlement was at first called Pownalborough, but at the beginning of the last century the present designation was adopted."
