Book excerpt: Mahwah was settled by an intrepid widow named Blandina Bayard, who in 1700 wisely set up a trading post on the banks of the Ramapo River. Soon, Mahwah grew into a hamlet with farms, mills, a general store, a distillery, a schoolhouse, and a church. Ramapo Valley Road and Island Road, early colonial highways, and Franklin Turnpike, an 1806 toll road, connected the frontier to nearby cities. Mahwah, then as now, was a busy, energetic crossroads. The railroad of 1848, a turning point to local prosperity, opened markets to farmers, promoted commuting, and attracted entrepreneurs who built magnificent farm estates. Mahwah's merchant community grew around the Erie Railroad depot. In the 1950s, abundant rural acreage yielded to housing, business, and industry. In time, the richly historic Ramapo Mountains were preserved as parkland. Mahwah visually captures this community's wonderfully varied heritage.

Algorithmic high-speed supercomputing has replaced traditional floor trading and human market makers, while centralized exchanges that once ensured fairness and transparency have fragmented into a dizzying array of competing exchanges and trading platforms. Darkness by Design exposes the unseen perils of market fragmentation and “dark” markets, some of which are deliberately designed to enable the transfer of wealth from the weak to the powerful. Walter Mattli traces the fall of the traditional exchange model of the NYSE, the world’s leading stock market in the twentieth century, showing how it has come to be supplanted by fragmented markets whose governance is frequently set up to allow unscrupulous operators to exploit conflicts of interest at the expense of an unsuspecting public. Market makers have few obligations, market surveillance is neglected or impossible, enforcement is ineffective, and new technologies are not necessarily used to improve oversight but to offer lucrative preferential market access to select clients in ways that are often hidden. Three main classes of mind-brain theory are considered and rejected: field theories, because they are based on a superficial analogy; single cell theories, because they emerge from a massive uncontrolled experimental program; and neural net theories, because they are constrained by combinatorial complexity. To support his argument, Uttal explores the empirical and conceptual foundations of these theoretical approaches and identifies flaws in their fundamental logic. The author concludes that the problems preventing solution of the mind-brain problem are intractable, yet well within the confines of natural science.
