Download or read book Mahmoud Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-23 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mahmoud, Vol. 1 of 2 At sixteen I felt all the vindictive passnons of manhood growing within me. In giving vent to these, they were more immediately directed against the youth of my own age and station, who chanced to offend me; though fre quent complaints made by their parents, of some insid ions act committed on their property, showed my re vengeful disposition when infuriated by provocation. I was averse to confinement of any kind. My ardent spirit panted for the space of the desert. I was incapable of submission. I had always been the favourite of my rela tions at Androussa; and I was told that l was the idol of my father - this will account for my insubordination. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constantinople and Its Environs, Vol. 1 of 2: In a Series of Letters, Exhibiting the Actual State of the Manners, Customs, and Habits of the Turks, Armenians, Jews, and Greeks, as Modified by the Policy of Sultan MahmoudThese successful attempts of the only despot of the age who has exerted himself in ameliorating the condi tion of his subjects, have already produced many and radical changes. Turkey is not what it was; nor are its habits and institutions what they once were. Great changes have taken, and are hourly taking, place, that will either result in a dismemberment of the empire, the deposition of Sultan Mahmoud, or the gradual resuscita tion of the remnants at least of this vast association of kingdoms. Thus the ancient accounts of the state of Turkey, its dress, manners, and habits, are gradually becoming obsolete, like the black-letter books of the middle ages. We require a picture of the Ottoman empire as it now is, not as it was five hundred years, or, indeed, fifty years ago. To receive our impressions from such accounts as have hitherto been strictly cor rect, would be somewhat like setting down contented with a description of the Mississippi Valley previous to the establishment of our independence.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Enoch from Antiquity to the Middle Ages Volume I

Download or read book Enoch from Antiquity to the Middle Ages Volume I written by John Reeves and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the ancient and medieval literature of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, one finds references to the antediluvian sage Enoch. Both the Book of the Watchers and the Astronomical Book were long known from their Ethiopic versions, which are preserved as part of Mashafa Henok Nabiy ('Book of Enoch the Prophet')—an Enochic compendium known in the West as 1 Enoch. Since the discovery of Aramaic fragments among the Dead Sea Scrolls, these books have attracted renewed attention as important sources for ancient Judaism. Among the results has been the recognition of the surprisingly long and varied tradition surrounding Enoch. Within 1 Enoch alone, for instance, we find evidence for intensive literary creativity. This volume provides a comprehensive set of core references for easy and accessible consultation. It shows that the rich afterlives of Enochic texts and traditions can be studied more thoroughly by scholars of Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity as well as by scholars of late antique and medieval religions. Specialists in the Second Temple period-the era in which Enochic literature first appears-will be able to trace (or discount) the survival of Enochic motifs and mythemes within Jewish literary circles from late antiquity into the Middle Ages, thereby shedding light on the trajectories of Jewish apocalypticism and its possible intersections with Jewish mysticism. Students of Near Eastern esotericism and Hellenistic philosophies will have further data for exploring the origins of 'gnosticism' and its possible impact upon sectarian currents in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Those interested in the intellectual symbiosis among Jews, Christians, and Muslims in the Middle Ages-and especially in the transmission of the ancient sciences associated with Hermeticism (e.g., astrology, theurgy, divinatory techniques, alchemy, angelology, demonology)-will be able to view a chain of tradition reconstructed in its entirety for the first time in textual form. In the process, we hope to provide historians of religion with a new tool for assessing the intertextual relationships between different religious corpora and for understanding the intertwined histories of the major religious communities of the ancient and medieval Near East.

Book The Ottoman Empire and the World Around it

Download or read book The Ottoman Empire and the World Around it written by Suraiya Faroqhi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-11-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Islamic law the world was made up of the 'House of Islam' and the 'House of War' with the Ottoman Sultan - successor to the early Caliphs - as supreme ruler of the Islamic world. However, in this ground-breaking study of the Ottoman Empire in the early modern period, Suraiya Faroqhi demonstrates that there was no 'iron curtain' between the Ottoman and 'other' worlds but rather a long-established network of connections - diplomatic, trading and financial., cultural and religious. These extended beyond regional contacts to the empires of Asia and the burgeoning 'modern' states of Europe - England, France, the Netherlands and Venice. Of course, military conflict was a constant factor in these relationships, but the overriding reality was 'one world' and contact between cultured and pragmatic elites - even 'gentlemen travelling for pleasure' - as well as pilgrimage and close artistic contact with the European Renaissance. Faroqhi's book is based on a huge study of original and early modern sources, including diplomatic records, travel and geographical writing, as well as personal accounts. Its breadth and originality will make it essential reading for historians of Europe and the Middle East.

Book excerpt: A pitch black, rainy night in a small Iranian town. Inside his house the Colonel is immersed in thought. Memories are storming in. Memories of his wife. Memories of the great patriots of the past, all of them assassinated or executed. Memories of his children, who had joined the different factions of the 1979 revolution. There is a knock on the door. Two young policemen have come to summon the Colonel to collect the tortured body of his youngest daughter and bury her before sunrise. The Islamic Revolution, like every other revolution in history, is devouring its own children. And whose fault is that? This shocking diatribe against the failures of the Iranian left over the last fifty years does not leave one taboo unbroken.

Book Handbook on Decision Making

Download or read book Handbook on Decision Making written by Chee Peng Lim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decision making arises when we wish to select the best possible course of action from a set of alternatives. With advancements of the digital technologies, it is easy, and almost instantaneous, to gather a large volume of information and/or data pertaining to a problem that we want to solve. For instance, the world-wi- web is perhaps the primary source of information and/or data that we often turn to when we face a decision making problem. However, the information and/or data that we obtain from the real world often are complex, and comprise various kinds of noise. Besides, real-world information and/or data often are incomplete and ambiguous, owing to uncertainties of the environments. All these make decision making a challenging task. To cope with the challenges of decision making, - searchers have designed and developed a variety of decision support systems to provide assistance in human decision making processes. The main aim of this book is to provide a small collection of techniques stemmed from artificial intelligence, as well as other complementary methodo- gies, that are useful for the design and development of intelligent decision support systems. Application examples of how these intelligent decision support systems can be utilized to help tackle a variety of real-world problems in different - mains, e. g. business, management, manufacturing, transportation and food ind- tries, and biomedicine, are also presented. A total of twenty chapters, which can be broadly divided into two parts, i. e.
