Book Criminal Tribes of Punjab

Download or read book Criminal Tribes of Punjab written by Birinder Pal Singh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the important projects launched by the British government in the late 19th century was the preparation of a detailed census of the demographic profile of the Indian population across the country. Unable to understand the cultural pluralism that characterizes Indian unity in variety, the census was riddled with problems of definition and categories. This book is a comprehensive ethnographic account of seven tribes in Punjab, classified as ‘criminal’ by the British administration, in order to make some sense of their alleged criminality: Bauria, Bazigar Banjara, Bangala, Barad, Gandhila, Nat and Sansi. The problem of definition of tribe and the issue of criminality are discussed critically. More importantly, the book shows that, contrary to the claims of the Punjab government, these ‘ex-criminal’ tribes still exist and constitute the poorest of the poor in an otherwise prosperous state. It also addresses to a significant current development of various Denotified Tribes’ Associations in Punjab (and other states as well) that have already started raking their long pending demand of Scheduled Tribe status. It is suggested that if their demands are not suitably addressed to they may take recourse to the Gujjar way of resolving conflict as in Rajasthan. As tribes the world over are slowly facing extinction, this important book will serve to archive the ethnographies of these ‘ex-criminal’ tribes. An unusual feature of the book is the voices of a few of the elderly in these tribes whose reminiscences about their traditions, beliefs and practices have been documented. The book will be valuable for those in the fields of sociology, anthropology, social history, tribal and ethnic studies, cultural and folk studies.

Book Neglected and Underutilized Crops

Download or read book Neglected and Underutilized Crops written by Muhammad Farooq and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neglected and Underutilized Crops: Future Smart Food explores future food crops with climate resilience potential. Sections cover their botany, nutritional significance, global distribution, production technology, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses of neglected and underutilized crops. By simply changing species in a crop rotation system, the cycle of some pests and diseases is disrupted and probabilities of infestations are reduced. Finally, the book provides case studies that highlight where the adaptation of crops to local environments, especially with regard to climate change, have been successful. These crops can help make agricultural production systems more resilient to climate change. Although a few books on neglected and underutilized crops are available, this comprehensive book covers the full scope of crop husbandry, nutritional significance and global distribution. Contains consistent coverage of botany, nutritional significance, production technology, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses Presents case studies of success stories where adaptations in local environments have made a difference, especially with climate change Addresses key opportunities for improving global food security

Book Neglected and Underutilized Crop Species for Sustainable Food and Nutritional Security Prospects and Hidden Potential

Download or read book Neglected and Underutilized Crop Species for Sustainable Food and Nutritional Security Prospects and Hidden Potential written by Omena Bernard Ojuederie and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global demand for food is rising as a result of increases in the global population as well as dietary changes. Furthermore, climate change exerts additional pressure on the food supply, adversely affecting sustainable food production. Increased temperatures and drought stresses coupled with the migration of pests limit crop yields and affect their nutritional quality. Many staple crops are unable to adapt to these changing climatic conditions. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nation to end hunger and promote good health and well-being, concerted efforts need to be made to enhance food production while mitigating the effects of climate change through the promotion of climate-smart agricultural practices and the utilization of neglected and underutilized crop species. These species can be highly nutritious and well-adapted to different agroecologies and climatic conditions, meaning that they offer the possibility of improving food and nutritional security.
