Book The Oxford Encyclopedia of Economic History

Download or read book The Oxford Encyclopedia of Economic History written by Joel Mokyr and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2003 with total page 2812 pages. Did high levels of taxation in the past normally lead to economic decline? The articles, all written and signed by international contributors, include scholars from Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Covering economic history in all areas of the world and segments of ecnomies from prehistoric times to the present, The Oxford Encyclopedia of Economic History is the ideal resource for students, economists, and general readers, offering a unique glimpse into this integral part of world history.

Book Culture and Context in Sudan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dennis Tully
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 1988-05-26
  • ISBN : 1438422458
  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book Culture and Context in Sudan written by Dennis Tully and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1988-05-26 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates that external factors, especially international political processes interacting with large-scale ecological and demographic changes, are the primary cause of problems experienced by the Masalit and other people in the Third World. The Masalit are Muslim farmers formerly independent as part of the sultanate of Dar Fur. Tully examines the local processes by which the Masalit became economically, politically, and culturally incorporated into the Sudan, and thus into a nexus of global forces. Culture and Context in Sudan clarifies the complicated macro-micro linkages responsible for the continuing environmental degradation, increasing inequality, and cultural assimilation that is so detrimental to the people of Dar Masalit. The author analyzes new data as well as previously-existing information to demonstrate the multi-level process of change and how it determines individual choices.

Book The Root Causes of Sudan s Civil Wars

Download or read book The Root Causes of Sudan s Civil Wars written by Douglas Hamilton Johnson and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sudan's post-independence history has been dominated by long, recurring, and bloody civil wars. Most commentators have attributed the country's political and civil strife either to an age-old racial and ethnic divide between Arabs and Africans or to colonially constructed inequalities. In The Root Causes of Sudan's Civil Wars, Douglas H. Johnson examines historical, political, economic, and social factors to come to a more subtle understanding of the trajectory of Sudan's civil wars. Johnson focuses on the essential differences between the modern Sudan's first civil war in the 1960s, the current war, and the minor conflicts generated by and contained within the larger wars. Regional and international factors, such as humanitarian aid, oil revenue, and terrorist organizations, are cited and examined as underlying issues that have exacerbated the violence. Readers will find an immensely readable yet nuanced and well-informed handling of the history and politics of Sudan's civil wars.

  • ISBN : 9780521531160

Download or read book Imperial Sudan written by M. W. Daly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-12-11 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imperial Sudan completes a study of the formative colonial period during which Britain and Egypt ruled the country. The previous volume, the acclaimed Empire on the Nile: The Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, 1898-1934, appeared in 1986. The current book takes the narrative to independence in 1956 and thus, with Empire, constitutes the first comprehensive survey of the political and economic history of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Dr Daly examines the structure of the colonial regime, its role in Anglo-Egyptian relations, and the development of Sudanese nationalist politics during the inter-war years. He surveys economic and social developments, including government finance and development policy, transport and communications, agricultural production, and social services. He reveals the Sudan's important role in the Second World War, when the Sudan Defence Force held back Italian invasion. The complicated path to self-government and self-determination, which culminated in independence in 1956, is explained in great detail. The book ends with the transfer of power, and the author reflects on the legacy of the Condominium.

Book Informal Power in the Greater Middle East

Download or read book Informal Power in the Greater Middle East written by Luca Anceschi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade or so, academic and non-academic observers have focussed mainly, if not exclusively on the institutions and places of formal power in the Greater Middle East, depicting politics in the region as a small area limited to local authoritarian rulers. In contrast, this book aims to explore the ‘hidden geographies’ of power, i.e. the political dynamics developing inside, in parallel to, and beyond institutional forums; arguing that these hidden geographies play a crucial role, both in support of and in opposition to official power. By observing less frequented spaces of power, co-option, and negotiation, and particularly by focusing on the interplay between formal and informal power, this interdisciplinary collection provides new insights in the study of the intersection between policy-making and practical political dynamics in the Greater Middle East. Contributing a fresh perspective to a much-discussed topic, Informal Power in the Greater Middle East will be an invaluable resource for students, scholars and those interested in the politics of the region.
