Download or read book Documenting Indigenous Knowledge In Science Technology and Innovation Penerbit USM written by Darlina Md Naim and published by Penerbit USM. This book was released on with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documenting Indigenous Knowledge in Science, Technology and Innovation contains several interesting chapters related to natural resources that are found in Malaysia and how these resources are used by indigenous and/or local people for survival. For example, the availability of marine resources such as fish as a source of protein to humans should be maintained to accommodate the increasing demand by the world’s population. Some approaches to maintain the availability of marine resources, as discussed in this book is the effective conservation strategies, sustainable aquaculture systems and the use of latest technology in the provision of capture data of marine life. The rapid increase in the world population has also changed people's views about the plants that have medicinal value towards the more aggressive use. However, efforts to record and document the medical plants is lacking in Malaysia. In addition to being a key ingredient in traditional medicine, plants such as banana can also be innovated as a renewable energy source. Although the discovery and design of this still new in Malaysia, efforts to further refine these findings should be continued to ensure the availability and sustainability of renewable energy sources. This book is suitable for use by all levels of readers, such as teachers, lecturers, researchers, scientists and the general public who need information about the topics included in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents local knowledge about issues on life, science and technology. It presents the related science and technology knowledge, new applications or developments that have taken place based on local knowledge. It consists of papers that illustrate the contribution of local knowledge to scientific investigation, unearth unknown or little known significance of local plant and animal resources, as well as their management and conservation. The argument for the importance of modern techniques to increase the supply of natural resources through scientific manipulations is clear. However, traditional methods that ensure better quality and resilience is recommended. Integration of the traditional with the modern is explored, using disaster management strategies and integrative health care system as examples. Another aspect explored in this book is the changing food culture among the three main ethnics groups in Malaysia due to their interactions within a multicultural society. This book also highlights the contribution of local knowledge in developing animation technology. Experimentation with GIS technology in the performing arts to map a dance performance is an example of trans-disciplinary collaboration between technology and the arts. This book serves to expand knowledge in science and technology that deals with local knowledge, and make it accessible to a wider, global audience beyond the Malay world.

Book Naquib Al Attas Islamization of Knowledge

Download or read book Naquib Al Attas Islamization of Knowledge written by Mohd Faizal Musa and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of the Islamization of knowledge was introduced by Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas in the late 1970s. It aimed to detach knowledge from Western culture and civilization in order to replace it with Islamic concepts, frameworks and values. The Islamization of knowledge was to occur in the fields of education and culture, manifesting in changes to the syllabus in institutions of higher learning and niche areas of interest in selected research institutes. In the field of culture, however, it resulted in an unintended consequence of Malay literature being heavily characterized by Islamic elements. Over the years, proponents of the Islamization of knowledge in Malaysia have moved beyond the fields of education and culture. They have entered the mainstream and become part of the state machinery, thus possibly impacting national policies. The concept has also evolved and arguably led to the strengthening of Islamic conservatism among Malaysian intellectual and cultural elites. More specifically, its exclusivist thinking does not augur well for intra- and intercommunal relations in the country.

Book Feminism and the Women s Movement in Malaysia

Download or read book Feminism and the Women s Movement in Malaysia written by Maznah Mohamad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining both personal and academic insights into the Malaysian women’s movement, this study provides an in-depth account of the multiple struggles of the Malaysian women’s movement, from securing gender equality in a patriarchal society to achieving unity among members of a multi-ethnic society that are further divided along class and religious lines. Most historical versions of national struggles have created icons out of male figures. The authors of this book have provided a corrective to this. They detail the importance of the role of the women’s movement, led by numerous unsung personalities in promoting social change in Malaysia. The book centres on a crucial argument: that in the context of an ethnically fragmented post-colonial, authoritarian society, an autonomous woman movement, which began in the early eighties had actually achieved significant political success. However the study observes that by the late 1990s, feminist issues were also readily appropriated by the state and the market, and also suggests that the emergence of ‘market feminism’ poses specific challenges for the future of the Malaysian women’s movement. This thorough and engaging account of feminism and the women’s movement in Malaysia will capture the interest of scholars, policy makers and activists.

Book Economic Evaluation of Dispensing Separation Policy in Malaysia A Decision Analysis Approach Penerbit USM

Download or read book Economic Evaluation of Dispensing Separation Policy in Malaysia A Decision Analysis Approach Penerbit USM written by Asrul Akmal Shafie and published by Penerbit USM. This book was released on 2013 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The separation of dispensing from doctor or what is simply called dispensing separation is a holty debated health policy proposition in Malaysia but rarely discussed. Each time the issue resurfaced, emotional opposition took place and extinguish the discussion of an important policy change that is long overdue in Malaysia. Consequently, both policy markers and the public are deprived of rational arguments for the policy. This book reported an economic evaluation study that has evaluated the benefit of dispensing separation policy from a Malaysian societal perspective using a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) framework. In the absence of empirical data or controlled trial on the policy, the study has also applied a decision modeling approach that make use of empirical data from published studies. This is the first time suach an approach was used in addressing this issue and we feel that this would have appeal not only to Malaysian policy, but also to other countries that are also contemplating such change.
