Book Magnetostriction Theory and Applications of Magnetoelasticity

Download or read book Magnetostriction Theory and Applications of Magnetoelasticity written by Etienne Du Trémolet de Lacheisserie and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-06-09 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This outstanding reference provides a comprehensive discussion of magnetoelasticity based on three accepted descriptions of magnetostriction: elastomagnetic matrices, a group symmetrical description, and a tensor formalism. It explores recent advances that rely mainly on Callen's work and emphasizes the influence of temperature, stress, and composition on the Joule magnetostriction of soft ferromagnets. The author offers a comprehensive examination of magnetoelastic effects useful for a variety of significant applications, including the Villari-, direct and inverse Wiedemann-, Matteuci-, ?E-, and invar-effects. This vital work also addresses fundamental topics, including pressure dependence of the Curie temperature, form effect, and magnetostriction in paramagnets, diamagnets, superconductors, and antiferromagnets. The last chapter is devoted to technical aspects such as experimental methods, technically useful materials (e.g., Terfenol-D and 2605SC Metglas), and various illustrative applications. Magnetostriction is one reference no physicist, materials scientist, or geophysicist should be without.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern theory of ferromagnetic magnetization processes has from the beginning recognized the importance of magnetoelastic inter actions. Most of the magnetoelastic calculations, however, have been basecl on the theory developed by R. BECKER and others in the early 1930's. That theory has several defects; how to remedy them is the subject of this monograph. I first became aware of the shortcomings of the traditional theory thru a critical study of electric and magnetic forces, which I undcrtook as a member of the COULOMB'S Law Committee of the American Asso ciation of Physics Teachers. My conclusions were published in 1951 in the American 10Z/rnal of Physics; an application of them to a problem in magnetostriction was published in 1953 in Reviews oflvlodern Physics. With the development, in 1956, of the "nucleation field" theory of micromagnetics, the need for a systematic and self-consistent theory of magnetoelastic interactions became more pressing. The traditional theory predicted that the nucleation field should differ negligibly from that of a rigid body; but my 1953 magnetostriction calculation suggested that terms omitted in that theory might be important. In the academic year 1963/64, 1 was finally able - thanks to a sabbatical furlough - to find the time needed for systematic development of a basic theory of magnetoelastic interactions in a ferromagnet.

Book Magnetostriction and Magnetoelastic Quantum Oscillations in P type Lead Telluride

Download or read book Magnetostriction and Magnetoelastic Quantum Oscillations in P type Lead Telluride written by T. E. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed experimental and theoretical study of quantum oscillations in the magnetostriction and Young's modulus of p-PbTe is presented. The valance band of PbTe is approximated by a spheroidal, nonparabolic model in which the effects of strain on the valance band parameters are described by a deformation potential model. Using appropriate thermodynamic derivatives of the modified Lifshitz-Kosevich expression for the oscillatory parts of the electronic free energy, it is shown that both types of oscillations arise mainly from relative shifts of the valance band maxima due to shear strains, accompanied by intervalley charge transfer. Band parameters derived from the periods, phases, and spin splitting of the oscillations are in generally good agreement with values reported by other workers. A detailed comparison is made of the experimentally observed oscillation amplitudes with those predicted by theory, and satisfactory agreement is found. The ratio of the amplitudes of the two effects yields a value of the valance band deformation potential in good agreement with a value found from piezoresistance experiments by Burke.

This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unified theory on nonlinear electro-magnetomechanical interactions of soft materials capable of large elastic deformations. The authors include an overview of the basic principles of the classic theory of electromagnetism from the fundamental notions of point charges and magnetic dipoles through to distributions of charge and current in a non-deformable continuum, time-dependent electromagnetic fields and Maxwell’s equations. They summarize relevant theories of continuum mechanics, required to account for the deformability of material and present a constitutive framework for the nonlinear magneto-and electroelastic interactions in a highly deformable material. The equations contained in the book formulate and solve a variety of representative boundary-value problems for both nonlinear magnetoelasticity and electroelasticity.

Book Handbook of Magnetic Materials

Download or read book Handbook of Magnetic Materials written by K.H.J. Buschow and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2002-09-20 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetoelectronics is a novel and rapidly developing field. This new field is frequently referred to as spin-electronics or spintronics. It includes spin-utilizing devices that need neither a magnetic field nor magnetic materials. In semiconductor devices, the spin of the carriers has only played a very modest role so far because well established semiconductor devices are non-magnetic and show only negligible effects of spin. Nanoscale thin films and multilayers, nanocrystalline magnetic materials, granular films, and amorphous alloys have attracted much attention in the last few decades, in the field of basic research as well as in the broader field of materials science. Such heterogeneous materials display uncommon magnetic properties that virtually do no occur in bulk materials. This is true, in particular with respect to surface (interface) magnetic anisotropy and surface (interface) magnetostrictive strains and giant magnetoresistance. The local atomic arrangement at the interface differs strongly from that in the bulk. The local symmetry is lowered, so that some interactions are changed or are missing altogether. The interface atoms may envisaged as forming a new phase and some properties characteristic of this phase may become predominant for the entire system. This becomes particularly evident in the case of interfacial magnetostriction which can lead to a decrease (almost to zero) or to an increase(over the bulk value) of the resulting magnetostriction of the nanoscale system. There are various forms of the interplay of magnetism and superconductivity, which can be divided into competition and coexistence phenomena. For instance, a strong competition is found in high-Tc cuprates. In these materials, depending on the doping rate, either Neel-type antiferromagnetism moments (e.g. from 4f-elements) with superconductivity is known to occur in systems where the concentration of these moments is sufficiently small or where they are antiferromagnetically ordered and only weakly coupled to the conduction electrons. During the years, intermetallic gadolinium compounds have adopted a special position in the study of 4f electron magnetism. The reason for this is the fact that the gadolinium moment consists only of a pure spin moment, orbital contributions to the moment being absent. As a consequence, gadolinium compounds have been regarded as ideal test benches for studying exchange interactions, free from complications due to crystal effects. Volume 14 of the Handbook of Magnetic Materials, as the preceding volumes, has a dual purpose. As a textbook it is intended to be of assistance to those who wish to be introduced to a given topic in the field of magnetism without the need to read the vast amount of literature published. As a work of reference it is intended for scientists active in magnetism research. To this dual purpose, volume 14 of the Handbook is composed of topical review articles written by leading authorities. In each of these articles an extensive description is given in graphical as well as tabular form, much emphasis being placed on the discussion of the experimental material in the framework of physics, chemistry and material science.

Book Chirality Magnetism and Magnetoelectricity

Download or read book Chirality Magnetism and Magnetoelectricity written by Eugene Kamenetskii and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-27 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses theoretical and experimental advances in metamaterial structures, which are of fundamental importance to many applications in microwave and optical-wave physics and materials science. Metamaterial structures exhibit time-reversal and space-inversion symmetry breaking due to the effects of magnetism and chirality. The book addresses the characteristic properties of various symmetry breaking processes by studying field-matter interaction with use of conventional electromagnetic waves and novel types of engineered fields: twisted-photon fields, toroidal fields, and magnetoelectric fields. In a system with a combined effect of simultaneous breaking of space and time inversion symmetries, one observes the magnetochiral effect. Another similar phenomenon featuring space-time inversion symmetries is related to use of magnetoelectric materials. Cross-coupling of the electric and magnetic components in these material structures, leading to the appearance of new magnetic modes with an electric excitation channel – electromagnons and skyrmions – has resulted in a wealth of strong optical effects such as directional dichroism, magnetochiral dichroism, and rotatory power of the fields. This book contains multifaceted contributions from international leading experts and covers the essential aspects of symmetry-breaking effects, including theory, modeling and design, proven and potential applications in practical devices, fabrication, characterization and measurement. It is ideally suited as an introduction and basic reference work for researchers and graduate students entering this field.
