Book excerpt: MagnetoRheological (MR) dampers have been used as reliable electronically adjustable shock and motion control devices in the past few years. Although these dampers have proven their performance in practice and the cost has decreased, their usage has been limited to high-end applications. The main drawback of MR dampers is their relatively large weight and energy consumption when compared to their passive counterparts. In this thesis, we investigate factors affecting weight and energy consumption of MR dampers and devise solutions to achieve energy-efficient and light-weight dampers. To this end, an analytic approach is presented to design and build a low-energy consumption and lightweight MR damper. It is shown that the proposed configuration can decrease the mass of MR damper significantly and reduce the energy consumption when AlNiCo alloys are utilized in the magnetic core. A proof-of-concept MR damper for mountain bike applications is designed, fabricated, characterized, and tested in the field, which meets the requirements in mountain bike industry in terms of energy consumption, compression and rebound forces, mass, size, and on-the-fly adjustability of the damping forces, by the user.

On the theoretical side a review of MR fluid compositions and key factors affecting the characteristics of these fluids is followed by a description of existing applications in the area of vibration isolation and flow-mode shock absorbers in particular. As a majority of existing magnetorheological devices operates in a so-called flow mode a critical review is carried out in that regard. Specifically, the authors highlight common configurations of flow-mode magnetorheological shock absorbers, or so-called MR dampers that have been considered by the automotive industry for controlled chassis applications. The authors focus on single-tube dampers utilizing a piston assembly with one coil or multiple coils and at least one annular flow channel in the piston.

Book excerpt: Over the past decades, scientists and engineers have tried to develop and improve various devices and control systems in order to mitigate and prevent civil structures against external dynamic forces such as strong wind and earthquakes. Indeed, damping devices absorb and dissipate the energy input during an earthquake, for instance and thus make structures safer and stable. Many types of devices are currently used such as viscous, friction or tuned mass dampers; however, one of the most recent promising systems proposed is the Magnetorheological damper (MR damper). Because of their ability to be controlled and to adapt their mechanical properties by varying a magnetic field, their high damping force (200kN), their low energy input required and their simple use and implementation in buildings, MR dampers seem to be suitable and realistic for civil engineering application. However, when they are subjected to external dynamic forces, the temperature increase in the damper device may significantly alter their performances and behaviors. This thesis first presents an overview of different technology control systems and MR damper device properties. Then, several mathematical models are developed and applied to explain the behavior of this class of damper. Finally, a study of the heating effects on MR damper performances incorporated in a real structure (3DOF) will be simulated.

Book excerpt: Earthquakes usually cause huge casualty due to the ground shaking and also due to the failure of built infrastructure such as buildings and bridges. Therefore, it is necessary to control the response of these structures to avoid collapse during earthquake. At present, various control technology is available. Among them semi-active control devices using Magneto-rheological (MR) fluid dampers are promising because of their stability and low power requirement. In this research, performance of three different models of MR dampers, namely RD-1005-3, SD-1000 and MRD-9000 is studied by integrating them into different building structures subjected to different earthquake forces. Here, the dampers and the structures are modeled numerically using the finite element method. It is found that all of the dampers are capable of controlling the response of building frames for different earthquakes. Damper performance is also investigated from the energy point of view. It is found that dampers have the capability of increasing the energy dissipation capacity of a structure without changing the structural properties such as stiffness. It is also found that this type of damper is able to provide some protection even if power supply systems fail during dynamic excitation, which is very common during earthquake. A detailed investigation is carried out to find the optimum location of dampers in simple building frames. It is observed that the performance of the dampers is highly sensitive to the location. Therefore it is very important to investigate the performance of damper before application in a real structure.

Book excerpt: Magneto rheological (MR) fluid based dampers are very promising for semi-active or adaptive suspension control system which is filled with MR fluid. Its huge advantages attract the researchers to use it in more advanced application. MR damper's damping force can be controlled by changing the viscosity of its internal magneto-rheological fluids (MRF). However the requirement of external power source is one of the major concerns. Self-powered MR damper is one of the recent advancement which is accomplished only for double ended MR damper. In this work an energy generated mono tube MR damper has been designed and investigated with power generation which has a huge demand in the vehicle suspension system. This damper combines the advantages of energy harvesting (reusing wasted energy) and MR damping (controllable damping force). This multifunctional integration would bring great benefits such as energy saving, size and weight reduction, lower cost, high reliability, and less maintenance for the MR damper systems. The proposed MR damper model consists permanent magnet and coil combination of energy generation. Two magnetic fields are induced inside this damper. One is in the outer coil of the power generator and another is the piston head coils. A 2-D Axisymmetric model of energy generated MR damper is developed in COMSOL Multiphysics where it is analyzed extensively by finite element method and its hardware model is tested by Universal Testing Machine (UTM). The complete magnetic isolation between these two fields is accomplished here, which can be seen in the finite element analysis and damper characteristic analysis. The energy generation ability of the MR damper model is tested by UTM and oscilloscope combination and the maximum output voltage is measured around 0.8 volts by oscilloscope. Finally, experimental dampers characteristic analysis is performed by using RD-8041-1 MR Damper. These results are compared with the hardware model experimental results, which clearly validate the hardware model damper characteristic.
