Book Magnetodynamic Phenomena in the Solar Atmosphere

Download or read book Magnetodynamic Phenomena in the Solar Atmosphere written by Yutaka Uchida and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the Proceedings of Colloquium No. 153 of the International Astro nomical Union, held at Makuhari near Tokyo on May 22 - 26, 1995, and hosted by the National Astronomical Observatory. This meeting was intended to be an interdisciplinary meeting between re searchers of solar and stellar activity, in order for them to exchange the newest information in each field. While each of these areas has seen remarkable advances in recent years, and while the researchers in each field have felt that information from the other's domain would be extremely useful in their own work, there have not been very many opportunities for intensive exchanges of information between these closely related fields. We therefore expected much from this meeting in pro viding stellar researchers with new results of research on the counterparts of their targets of research, spatially and temporarily resolved, as observed on the Sun. Likewise we hoped to provide solar researchers with new results on gigantic ver sions of their targets of research under the very different physical circumstances on other active stars. It was our greatest pleasure that we had wide attendance of experts and active researchers of both research fields from all over the world. This led to extremely interesting talks and very lively discussions, thereby stimulating the exchange of ideas across the fields.

Book Observational Plasma Astrophysics Five Years of Yohkoh and Beyond

Download or read book Observational Plasma Astrophysics Five Years of Yohkoh and Beyond written by Tetsuya Watanabe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its launch in 1991, the Yohkoh satellite has been returning unprecedented observations of solar flares and the dynamic solar corona. This book is a collection of papers presented at a meeting held in: Yoyogi, Tokyo, on the occasion of Yohkoh's fifth anniversary of operation. The papers constitute a summary of observations and results over the five years, including contributions based on data from Yohkoh's hard and soft X-ray telescopes and its spectrometer experiments. The five years of data, covering approximately one-half of a solar cycle, reveal a fresh perspective on solar science, with a new picture of solar flares and the active Sun emerging. Also, for the first time there are extensive results from Yohkoh observations of the Sun during the solar minimum period. This wide-ranging volume will be of interest to workers in solar physics and X-ray astronomy. It also contains material appropriate for supplemental reading for graduate students in solar physics.

Download or read book The Sun from Space written by Kenneth R. Lang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-20 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Edition of The Sun from Space, completed in 1999, focused on the early accomplishments of three solar spacecraft, SOHO, Ulysses, and Yohkoh, primarily during a minimum in the Sun’s 11-year cycle of magnetic activity. The comp- hensive Second Edition includes the main ndings of these three spacecraft over an entire activity cycle, including two minima and a maximum, and discusses the signi cant results of six more solar missions. Four of these, the Hinode, RHESSI, STEREO, and TRACE missions were launched after the First Edition was either nished or nearly so, and the other two, the ACE and Wind spacecraft, extend our investigations from the Sun to its varying input to the Earth. The Second Edition does not contain simple updates or cosmetic patch ups to the material in the First Edition. It instead contains the relevant discoveries of the past decade, integrated into chapters completely rewritten for the purpose. This provides a fresh perspective to the major topics of solar enquiry, written in an enjoyable, easily understood text accessible to all readers, from the interested layperson to the student or professional.

Book Advances in Solar Research at Eclipses from Ground and from Space

Download or read book Advances in Solar Research at Eclipses from Ground and from Space written by Jean-Paul Zahn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this Advanced Study Institute was to give an account on the most recent results obtained in solar research. Bucharest was chosen to host it, because the capital city of Romania was located right in the middle of the totality path of the last eclipse of the millennium, on 11th August 1999; furthermore the phenomenon was close to reach there its longest duration: 2m 23s. Such a total eclipse is not only a very spectacular event which draws the crowds: to astronomers, solar eclipses still offer the best conditions for observing the lower part of the corona. The Sun plays a crucial role in our very existence. It was responsible for the formation of the Earth, and rendered this planet fit to host living beings, providing the right amount of heat, and this for a long enough span of time. Quite understandably, it has always been a prime target of human curiosity, and more recently one of scientific investigation. During the last century, it was realized that the Sun is a star like billions of others; we learned since that it draws its energy from the nuclear fusion of hydrogen, and we are now able to estimate its age and life expectancy.

Book Reconnection in the Solar Corona and Magnetospheric Substorms

Download or read book Reconnection in the Solar Corona and Magnetospheric Substorms written by COSPAR. Scientific Assembly and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1997 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paperback. Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in a space, solar or astrophysical plasma. It changes the connectivity of plasma elements and has wide-ranging consequences, including the conversion of magnetic energy into other forms and the acceleration of particles by a variety of mechanisms. A series of numerical experiments have recently stimulated a new generation of fluid theories, with current hot topics including the 3D nature of reconnection and its properties in a collisionless plasma. The applications include energy release to heat the solar corona and power solar flares and connectivity changes in flux transfer events and geomagnetic substorms in the Magnetosphere. Containing 38 papers divided into four chapters, the present volume represents the proceedings of a memorable two-day symposium held during the COSPAR General Assembly on the theory and applications of reconnection in the Sun's corona and Earth's magnetosphere.
