Book Magnetic Quantum Dots in II VI Semiconductor Nanowires

Download or read book Magnetic Quantum Dots in II VI Semiconductor Nanowires written by Pamela Rueda-Fonseca and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this PhD work a novel type of magnetic semiconductor object has been developed: Cd(Mn)Te quantum dots embedded in ZnTe/ZnMgTe core-shell nanowires. The goal was to investigate the growth, by molecular beam epitaxy, and the fundamental properties of these complex heterostructures. For that purpose, two main issues were addressed: i) gaining control of the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of these quantum objects by mastering their growth; and ii) obtaining quantitative local knowledge on the chemical composition of those non-homogeneous nanostructures. To tackle these topics, our research was divided into four stages. The first stage was devoted to perform a quantitative study of the formation process of the Au particles that catalyze the growth of nanowires. The second stage involved the analysis of the mechanisms and parameters governing the growth of ZnTe nanowires. In particular, two different types of nanowires were found: cone-shaped nanowires with the zinc-blende crystal structure and cylinder-shaped nanowires with the hexagonal wurtzite structure. A diffusion-driven growth model is employed to fit some of the quantitative results presented in this part. The third stage focused on the insertion of pure CdTe quantum dots containing Mn ions in the core-shell nanowires. An initial study of the relevant parameters influencing the magneto-optical properties of these objects, such as the quantum dot confinement, the Mn incorporation, and the strain anisotropy, was performed. The four and last stage of this work concerned the quantitative interpretation of Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy measurements performed on single core-multishell nanowires. A geometrical model was proposed to retrieve the shape, the size and the local composition of the quantum dot insertions and of the multiple layers of the heterostructures. This study was coupled to other complementary characterization measurements on the same nanowire, such as cathodo-luminescence, micro-photo-luminescence and magneto-optical spectroscopy.

Download or read book Optical Properties of Semiconductor Quantum Dots written by Ulrike Woggon and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of the current understanding of the physics of zero-dimensional semiconductors. It concentrates mainly on quantum dots of wide-gap semiconductors, but touches also on zero-dimensional systems based on silicon and III-V materials. After providing the reader with a theoretical background, the author illustrates the specific properties of three-dimensionally confined semiconductors, such as the size dependence of energy states, optical transitions, and dephasing mechanisms with the results from numerous experiments in linear and nonlinear spectroscopy. Technological concepts of the growth concepts and the potential of this new class of semiconductor materials for electro-optic and nonlinear optical devices are also discussed.

Book Theoretical Insight Into the Manipulation of the Optical and Magnetic Properties of Transition metal doped II VI Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Download or read book Theoretical Insight Into the Manipulation of the Optical and Magnetic Properties of Transition metal doped II VI Semiconductor Quantum Dots written by Joseph William May and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to tune the electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of II-VI semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) makes these materials ideal candidates in the fabrication of new solar energy, spin electronic, and phosphorescent devices. This dissertation makes use of electronic structure theory to provide insight into the physical underpinnings of magnetic exchange and photoexcitation in Mn2[superscript +]- and Co2[superscript +]-doped CdSe and ZnO QDs. Specifically, new methods for controlling these physical effects via the incorporation of various dopants or changes in the QD's size and shape are presented. Several examples of these control techniques are discussed in this dissertation. Ferromagnetic alignment of multiple unpaired Mn2[superscript +] 3d electrons is predicted when the p-type defect N2[superscript - ] is present in ZnO QDs. Control over the magnetic exchange interactions between charge carriers and TM2[superscript] dopants that give rise to ferromagnetism is achieved by distorting the QD's shape along one or two dimensions. Aliovalent doping with Al3[superscript +] produces QDs that are spectroscopically identical to photochemically charged QDs, yet exhibit different reactivities. A unique temperature dependence of the luminescence and photoconductivity in large Co2[superscript +] -doped ZnO QDs is predicted upon excitation of its mid-gap excited state. Lastly, a new method for the optimization of transition state molecular geometries is shown to exhibit fast optimization and to be advantageous for difficult optimizations where the reaction path is flat, ideal for optimizing large QD structures.

Book Optical Properties of Semiconductor Nanostructures

Download or read book Optical Properties of Semiconductor Nanostructures written by Marcin L. Sadowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical methods for investigating semiconductors and the theoretical description of optical processes have always been an important part of semiconductor physics. Only the emphasis placed on different materials changes with time. Here, a large number of papers are devoted to quantum dots, presenting the theory, spectroscopic investigation and methods of producing such structures. Another major part of the book reflects the growing interest in diluted semiconductors and II-IV nanosystems in general. There are also discussions of the fascinating field of photonic crystals. `Classical' low dimensional systems, such as GsAs/GaAlAs quantum wells and heterostructures, still make up a significant part of the results presented, and they also serve as model systems for new phenomena. New materials are being sought, and new experimental techniques are coming on stream, in particular the combination of different spectroscopic modalities.

Book excerpt: Compound Semiconductors 2004 was the 31st Symposium in this distinguished international series, held at Hoam Convention Center of Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea from September 12 to September 16, 2004. It attracted over 180 submissions from leading scientists in academic and industrial research institutions, and remains a major forum for the compound semiconductor research community since the first one held in 1966 at Edinburgh, UK under the name of 'International Symposium on Gallium Arsenide and related Compounds'. These proceedings provide an international perspective on the latest research and an overview of recent, important developments in III-V compounds, II-VI compounds and IV-IV compounds. In the total of 106 papers, notable progress was reported in the development of zinc oxide and spintronics. Steady advances were seen in traditional topics such as III-V based electronic and optoelectronic devices, growth and processing, and characterization. Novel research trends were observed in quantum structures, such as quantum wires and dots, which are promising for future developments in nanotechnology. As the primary forum for research into these materials and their device applications the book is an essential reference for researchers working on compound semiconductors in semiconductor physics, device physics, materials science, chemistry and electronic and electrical engineering.
