Book Chemisorption and Magnetization

Download or read book Chemisorption and Magnetization written by P. W. Selwood and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemisorption and Magnetization focuses on particle size determination and on the number of adsorbent atoms affected when any molecule is adsorbed on a surface. This book examines the adsorption of a molecule on the surface of a ferromagnetic solid that produces a change in the magnetization of the solid. Organized into 12 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the experimental methods used for studying chemisorption and magnetization, which are applicable in granulometry. This text then discusses the measurement of saturation magnetization in a ferromagnetic substance in the form of small particles. Other chapters consider the conditions in a typical nickel–silica hydrogenation catalyst. This text examines as well the magnetization at moderate fields and near room temperature. The final chapter deals with the properties and complexities of palladium, platinum, and nickel. Students and researchers interested in heterogeneous catalysis and related areas will find this book extremely useful.

Book Adsorption and Collective Paramagnetism

Download or read book Adsorption and Collective Paramagnetism written by Pierce W. Selwood and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adsorption and Collective Paramagnetism describes a novel method for studying chemisorption. The method is based on the change in the number of unpaired electrons in the adsorbent as chemisorption occurs. The method is applicable to almost all adsorbates, but it is restricted to ferromagnetic adsorbents such as nickel, which may be obtained in the form of very small particles, that is to say, to ferromagnetic adsorbents with a high specific surface. While almost all the data used illustratively have been published elsewhere this is the first complete review of the subject. The book is addressed primarily to readers interested in heterogeneous catalysis and related areas of surface chemistry, surface physics, and physical metallurgy. For that reason there are included a number of definitions, and an elementary introduction to magnetism. But it is hoped that specialists in magnetism and solid state physics may also find here something of value. For that reason there is included an introduction to adsorption phenomena. If one group finds the detailed magnetic descriptions and calculations to be tedious it is to be hoped that the adsorption work will be found comprehensible, and vice versa.

Book Characterization of Porous Solids and Powders Surface Area Pore Size and Density

Download or read book Characterization of Porous Solids and Powders Surface Area Pore Size and Density written by Seymour Lowell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-24 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of interest in newly developed porous materials has prompted the writing of this book for those who have the need to make meaningful measurements without the benefit of years of experience. One might consider this new book as the 4th edition of "Powder Surface Area and Porosity" (Lowell & Shields), but for this new edition we set out to incorporate recent developments in the understanding of fluids in many types of porous materials, not just powders. Based on this, we felt that it would be prudent to change the title to "Characterization of Porous Solids and Powders: Surface Area, Porosity and Density". This book gives a unique overview of principles associated with the characterization of solids with regard to their surface area, pore size, pore volume and density. It covers methods based on gas adsorption (both physi and chemisorption), mercury porosimetry and pycnometry. Not only are the theoretical and experimental basics of these techniques presented in detail but also, in light of the tremendous progress made in recent years in materials science and nanotechnology, the most recent developments are described. In particular, the application of classical theories and methods for pore size analysis are contrasted with the most advanced microscopic theories based on statistical mechanics (e.g. Density Functional Theory and Molecular Simulation). The characterization of heterogeneous catalysts is more prominent than in earlier editions; the sections on mercury porosimetry and particularly chemisorption have been updated and greatly expanded.

Book Chemisorption And Reactions On Metallic Films V1

Download or read book Chemisorption And Reactions On Metallic Films V1 written by J Anderson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemisorption and Reactions on Metallic Films, Volume 1 is a six-chapter text that describes the role of evaporated metal films in advancing the understanding of the metal-gas interface chemistry. Chapter 1 presents electron microscopy and diffraction studies and their contributions in elucidating the growth and structure of polycrystalline and epitaxially grown films. Chapter 2 describes the techniques of preparation and characterization of metallic films and examines the heats of adsorption, electrical conductivity, surface area, and sticking probabilities of such films. Chapter 3 discusses the strength of pairwise interactions; the influence of the intermetallic bond on the equilibrium shape of metal crystallites; the bonding of individual metal atoms to different crystallographic planes; the interaction of metal atoms and crystallites with non-conducting substrates; and the effects of residual gases on this interaction. Chapters 4 and 5 address the adsorption of metallic films, with an emphasis on general trends in adsorptive and electronic properties of bulk metals. These chapters also discuss the effects of adsorption on the electrical conductance of island-like and coherent films and on the ferromagnetic properties of films. Chapter 6 evaluates the application of infrared spectroscopy to the studies of the surfaces of metal films and the use of the available infrared spectroscopic data in reconciling the results of adsorption studies on oxide-supported metal particles with those obtained with clean evaporated metal films prepared under ultra high vacuum conditions. Research scientists and graduate students who are interested in the fundamentals of adsorption and catalysis will find this volume invaluable.

Book Chemisorption and Reactivity on Supported Clusters and Thin Films

Download or read book Chemisorption and Reactivity on Supported Clusters and Thin Films written by R.M. Lambert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heterogeneous catalysis provides the backbone of the world's chemical and oil industries. The innate complexity of practical catalytic systems suggests that useful progress should be achievable by investigating key aspects of catalysis by experimental studies on idealised model systems. Thin films and supported clusters are two promising types of model system that can be used for this purpose, since they mimic important aspects of the properties of practical dispersed catalysts. Similarly, appropriate theoretical studies of chemisorption and surface reaction clusters or extended slab systems can provide valuable information on the factors that underlie bonding and catalytic activity. This volume describes such experimental and theoretical approaches to the surface chemistry and catalytic behaviour of metals, metal oxides and metal/metal oxide systems. An introduction to the principles and main themes of heterogeneous catalysis is followed by detailed accounts of the application of modern experimental and theoretical techniques to fundamental problems. The application of advanced experimental methods is complemented by a full description of theoretical procedures, including Hartree-Fock, density functional and similar techniques. The relative merits of the various approaches are considered and directions for future progress are indicated.

Book Research Study of Chemisorption by Magneto Absorption

Download or read book Research Study of Chemisorption by Magneto Absorption written by D. P. Hollis and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of adsorbed H on the magnetic losses in finely divided Ni at 3.7 and 13 mc/sec. was studied. The increased sensitivity at these frequencies is attributed to a difference in relaxation times for particles of different sizes. Experiments designed to detect the effect of adsorbed H on the microwave absorption of Fe and Ni single crystals are described. Possible reasons for the lack of a clear-cut effect are discussed. Ferromagnetic resonance spectra of finely divided Ni are described. The effects of adsorbed H on the intensity, g-value and line width of the resonance are discussed. It is demonstrated that the well-known magnetic effects of chemisorbed H on Ni, which have been measured at static and low frequency fields, can be observed also by magnetic resonance and with a sensitivity at least 10 to the 5th power greater, in terms of weight of metal required.
