Book Measuring Resting Cerebral Perfusion using Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI

Download or read book Measuring Resting Cerebral Perfusion using Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI written by James Duffin and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acquisition of resting cerebral perfusion measures using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the assessments of cerebrovascular health used to discern how well patients are coping with anatomical changes such as stenosis, and other factors impacting the supply of blood flow to the brain. Perfusion measures may be obtained using several MRI based techniques including arterial spin labeling (ASL) and dynamic contrast enhanced methods that rely on injected contrast agents such as gadolinium. Recently hypoxia-induced changes in deoxyhemoglobin have been used as a non-invasive contrast agent, measuring the resulting changes in blood oxygen dependent (BOLD) signals with MRI. With each approach, the means through which voxel-wise cerebral perfusion information is derived differs, leading to the development a variety of analysis methods in recent studies. This Research Topic is intended to attract manuscripts that advance the use of resting cerebral perfusion measures in clinical assessments of cerebrovascular health. In pursuit of this aim a better understanding of several aspects are needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Cerebral Blood Flow: Mathematical Models, Instrumentation, and Imaging Techniques" was held in L'Aquila, Italy, June 2-13, 1986. Contributions to this program were received from the University of L'Aquila, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Siemens Elettra S.p.A., and Bracco S.p.A. Recent studies of the cerebral blood circulation have lagged behind analysis of other parameters such as glucose utilization, transmitter distribution, and precursors. This Advanced Study Institute tried to fill this gap by analyzing in detail different physical techniques such as Autoradiography (including Double-Tracer Auto radiography and highly specific tracers as Iodoantipyrine, Micro spheres), Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Each method was analyzed in regards to its precision, resolution, response time. A considerable part of this Institute was devoted to the mathematics of CBF measurement, in its two aspects, i.e. the modeling of the underlying kinetic system and the statistical analysis of the data. The modeling methods proposed included the development of a differential algebra whereby the differential and integral equations involved could be solved by simple algebraic methods, including graph theoretical ones; the statistical methods proposed included the illustration of different parametrizations of possible use in the interpretation of experimental results.

Book Organ Blood Flow Measurement with T1 and T2 Weighted Mri Techniques

Download or read book Organ Blood Flow Measurement with T1 and T2 Weighted Mri Techniques written by Mahmood Nazarpoor and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of several methods used to estimate the haemodynamic parameters of the brain. Dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI (DSC MRI) is the most common clinical technique using MRI. This relies on the T2* changes that occur during passage of an injected bolus of paramagnetic material through tissue. This book will be described DSC MRI method in details. This book also attempts to introduce a new T1 MRI technique that is based on an existing radionuclide technique. The validity of the T1 MRI technique was investigated over a range of parameters including contrast agent concentrations and flow rates. The theory of inflow effect and inflow correction methods was discussed in the book. Experimental research for measuring absolute cerebral blood flow base on T1 MRI technique was reported. These research results can be applied to future clinical studies to produce more accurate perfusion values. In summary, this book provides a necessary information for measuring organ blood flow with MRI. It is a valuable reference book for last term undergraduate students, post graduate students and scientists.

Book Acquisition and Processing Techniques for Rapid Robust and Patient specific Measurement of Cerebral Diffusion and Perfusion Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Download or read book Acquisition and Processing Techniques for Rapid Robust and Patient specific Measurement of Cerebral Diffusion and Perfusion Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging written by Nora-Josefin Breutigam and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful technique that enables accurate medical diagnoses. Not only does it allow the visualization of static tissue contrasts, but it also provides the ability to measure the function and physiology behind important life processes. This dissertation presents two methods for imaging physiological effects, namely diffusion and perfusion. For diffusion-weighted imaging, but not limited to this application, a technique called simultaneous multi-contrast (SMC) imaging is introduced to acquire multiple image contrasts from different scan types within a single measurement. This technique offers new opportunities in clinical protocols where examination time is a critical factor and multiple image contrasts need to be acquired. The method was tested in a phantom and healthy subjects. The results showed that simultaneous acquisition of two contrasts (here diffusion-weighted imaging and T2*-weighting) with SMC imaging is possible with robust contrast separation and minimal impact on image quality. Thereby, the simultaneous acquisition of multiple contrasts reduces the overall examination time and there is inherent registration between contrasts. For cerebral perfusion-weighted imaging, the goal of this work was to increase the robustness of time-encoded arterial spin labeling (ASL) to image artifacts by adjusting the timing of imaging during active scanning individually for each subject. One of the major challenges in ASL imaging is the high variability of arterial transit times (ATT), which leads to arterial transit delay (ATD) artifacts. In particular, in patients with pathologic changes, these artifacts occur when post-labeling delay (PLD) and bolus duration are not optimally matched to the individual, resulting in difficult quantification of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and ATT. This is also true for the free-lunch (FL) approach in Hadamard-encoded pseudocontinuous ASL (H-pCASL). The method was tested in healthy subjects, with FL-bolus timing individualized by the developed and implemented adaptive H-pCASL sequence in combination with an automatic feedback algorithm. Automatic subject-specific adjustment of the FL-bolus PLD during an ongoing measurement may reduce uncertainties in perfusion quantification and reduce the number of cases in which measurements have to be repeated because the recommended timing does not fit the patient.

Book Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Imaging in Neurochemistry

Download or read book Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Imaging in Neurochemistry written by Herman Bachelard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advances in Neurochemistry series was initiated for a readership of neuroscientists with a background in biochemistry. True to this concept, the present volume brings together various applications of magnetic resonance technology to advance our knowledge of how the nervous system functions. Whether at the cellular, tissue slice, or intact organism level. magnetic resonance techniques are by their nature noninvasive, and thus provide a window through which biochemical reactions can be viewed without grinding, binding, or other wise perturbing ongoing physiological processes. As technological improve ments in methodology, such as higher and more uniform magnetic fields, novel paradigms for data analysis, etc. , are made, we find increased sensitivity and improved temporal and spatial resolution for functional imaging techniques on the one hand, and better separation of signals that identify chemical properties in spectral shift studies, on the other. It is upon knowledge such as is described in the twelve chapters that follow, that further advances in scientific discovery and the biomedical applications of tomorrow will be based. We are grateful to Dr. Bachelard, the Volume Editor, and to the authors of the individual chapters for their efforts. We also note that with this volume Dr. Morris Aprison, a co-founder of the Advances in Neurochemistry series has stepped down and acknowledge with thanks his major role in its inception. Download or read book Magnetic Resonance and Brain Function Approaches from Physics written by Società italiana di fisica and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, NMR has set the basis for the understanding of the function and disfunction of the human brain. Particularly, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has a leading position among the methodologies used for investigation and diagnostic of the Central Nervous System. In the 1990's the objective of finding new investigating means drove scientists towards different approaches, including: 1) Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) MRI; 2) Double Magnetic Resonance (DMR); 3) Hyperpolarized Gases. These 3 methods are aimed at detecting brain metabolites with increasing sensitivity and resolution. This Enrico Fermi Course is of interest to researchers who work at the development of these interdisciplinary areas, i.e. physicists, chemists, engineers, but also the biomedical aspects of brain function in connection to the NMR potentialities.
