Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They say true love is eternal. But as so many lovers discover, it often ends with a trip to the lawyers of?¼üce. Magnetic Repulsion collects 100 poems that explore the core of the entire romantic experiencefrom wonderful ?¼ürst blush, to tentative uncertainty, to the need for healing when it all fades. The result is a compelling and necessary companion for anyone who has ever fallen in and out of love. Poet Patricia A. Hawkensons gift for evoking the complex, sensual essence of human relationships is on full display here. In Wringing Warm, a just-laundered towel becomes a metaphor of the electric connection between two people. Naked Sushi examines a womans satisfaction at her lovers muddy footprints--a reminder that she is needed, and not alone. But there are also poems that resonate with transition. Apnea looks at changes in relationships through the prism of two partners position in bed. And in A Harmony of One, Hawkensons speaker proclaims her independence, resolving to learn the tune of my own song. Through it all, Hawkensons textured epiphanies and gorgeous images do justice to this wonderful, crazy, frightening, maddening and confusing thing we call love and life. Magnetic Repulsion: 100 Poems From Desire to Disgust, is nothing less than a study guide for separating relationships.

  • Release : 2020-03-17
  • ISBN : 0571361463
  • Pages : 116 pages

Download or read book Magnetic Field written by Simon Armitage and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large village of Marsden, West Yorkshire not only was home to Simon Armitage's beginnings as writer, but has continued as a vital presence throughout his works: from his very first pamphlet, Human Geography (1988), to his forthcoming new collection New Cemetery (scheduled for 2022). This edition gathers all the Marsden poems together to create a 'poetry of place' edition, which will offer a new way of appraising Simon's body of work, as well as celebrating this overlooked region that has meant so much to him personally. Simon will be announcing a decade-long tour of libraries in the UK as a central strand of his laureateship: every spring he'll be reading in a handful of libraries across the country, and would like to feature this collection as part of it, donating a copy to each library. Even in Marsden the extraordinary could happen, apparently. Staring out of that window every night I developed a new sense of the world, one that went beyond the factual and the informational. A sense of what it was like, and how it felt. That was the beginning of my life as a writer, even though I still didn't know how to capture experiences in words. - Simon Armitage in the Guardian, on growing up in Marsden.

Book Laughing Atoms Laughing Matter

Download or read book Laughing Atoms Laughing Matter written by T.H.M. Gellar-Goad and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The aim of this study is to track De Rerum Natura along two paths of satire. One is the broad boulevard of satiric literature from the beginnings of Greek poetry to the plays, essays, and broadcast media of the modern world. The other is the narrower lane of Roman verse satire, satura, whose canon begins in the Middle Republic with Ennius and Lucilius and closes with Juvenal, an author of the Flavian era. The first main portion of this book (chapters 2-3) focuses on Lucretius and Roman satura, while the following chapters broaden the scope to satiric elements of Lucretius more generally, but still with plenty of reference to the poets of Roman satura as satirists par excellence. By examining how Lucretius' poem employs the tools, techniques, and tactics of satire-by evaluating how and where in De Rerum Natura the speaker functions as a satirist-we gain, I argue, a fuller, richer understanding of how the poem works and how its poetry interacts with its purported philosophical program. Attention to the role of De Rerum Natura in the more specific tradition of Roman verse satire demonstrates that Lucretius' poem stands as a detour on the genre's highway, a swerve in the trajectory of satura. The numerous satiric passages and frequently satiric narrator of De Rerum Natura draw on earlier Roman satire, and in turn the poem influences the later satiric verse of Horace, Persius, and Juvenal. While De Rerum Natura is not in and of itself a member of the Roman genre of satire, it is an important player in the genre's development"--

Book What Is Amazing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Heather Christle
  • Publisher : Wesleyan University Press
  • Release : 2012-02-14
  • ISBN : 0819572780
  • Pages : 80 pages

Download or read book What Is Amazing written by Heather Christle and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by a voracious curiosity about humans and other subjects, the poems in Heather Christle’s What Is Amazing describe and invent worlds in an attempt to understand through participation. The book draws upon the wisdom of foolishness and the logic of glee, while simultaneously exploring the suffering inherent to embodied consciousness. Speakers play out moments of bravado and fear, love and mortality, disappointment and desire. They socialize incorrigibly with lakes, lovers, fire, and readers, reasoning their way to unreasonable conclusions. These poems try to understand how it is that we come to recognize and differentiate objects and beings, how wholly each is attached to its name, and which space reveals them. What Is Amazing delights in fully inhabiting its varied forms and voices, singing worlds that often coincide with our own.

Book Magnetic North

    Book Details:

  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 9780547085760
  • Pages : 84 pages

Download or read book Magnetic North written by Linda Gregerson and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2008 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning collection from the award-winning poet Linda Gregerson examines the intersections of history, science, and art. Touching on subjects as diverse as a breakthrough discovery in cell biology and the films of Ingmar Bergman, the anatomy of a possum and the Nazi occupation of Poland, Gregerson seeks to distill "the shape of the question," the tenuous connection between knowing and suffering, between the brightness of the body and the shadows of the mind. "Choose any angle you like," she writes, "the world is split in two." Longtime readers of Gregerson's poetry will be fascinated by her departure from the supple tercets in which she has worked for nearly twenty years: Magnetic North is a bold anthology of formal experiments. It is also a heartening act of sustained attention from one of our most mindful American poets

Why has the man Flinty loves returned from the war so changed and distant? Why has her brother Andy 'gone with cattle', leaving Flinty in charge of their younger brother and sister and with the threat of eviction from the farm she loves so dearly? A brumby muster held under the watchful eye of the legendary Clancy of the Overflow offers hope. Now Flinty must ride to save her farm, her family and the valley she loves. Book Sex Lies and Question Time

Download or read book Sex Lies and Question Time written by Kate Ellis and published by Hardie Grant Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sex, Lies and Question Time, former MP Kate Ellis explores the good, the bad and the ugly of life as a woman in Australian politics. Seventy-seven years after the first woman entered Australian parliament, female politicians are still the minority. They cop scrutiny over their appearance, their sex lives, their parenting and their portfolios in a way few of their male colleagues do. It’s time to call bullshit on the toxic Canberra culture. Alongside her own experiences from fifteen years in parliament, Kate Ellis reveals a frank and fascinating picture of women across Australian politics, including Julia Gillard, Julie Bishop, Linda Burney, Sussan Ley, Penny Wong, Sarah Hanson-Young and Pauline Hanson. Kate explores issues like sexism, motherhood, appearances, social media, the sisterhood and, of course, sex. But she also celebrates everything Australian female politicians have achieved. Wry, candid and provocative, Sex, Lies and Question Time is a powerful call to demand more of our leaders and our institutions. It reminds us we need greater diversity to shape a fairer Australia, where ‘women’s issues’ are everyone’s issues. A better parliament means a better Australia. The stakes are high, and the standards should be too.
