Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1984 a Summer School on Solar System Plasmas was held at Imperial College with the support of the Science and Engineering Research Council. An excellent group of lecturers was assembled to give a series of basic talks on the various aspects of the subject, aimed at Ph. D. students or researchers from related areas wanting to learn about the plasma physics of the solar system. The students were so appreciative of the lectures that it was decided to write them up as the present book. Traditionally, different areas of solar system science, such as solar and magnetospheric physics, have been studied by separate communities with little contact. However, it has become clear that many common themes cut right across these distinct topics, such as magnetohydrodynamic instabilities and waves, magnetic reconnect ion , convection, dynamo activity and particle acceleration. The plasma parameters may well be quite different in the Sun's atmosphere, a cometary tailor Jupiter's magnetosphere, but many of the basic processes are similar and it is by studying them in different environments that we come to understand them more deeply. Furthermore, direct in situ measurements of plasma properties at one point in the solar wind or the magnetosphere complement the more global view by remote sensing of a similar phenomenon at the Sun.

Book Advances in Solar System Magnetohydrodynamics

Download or read book Advances in Solar System Magnetohydrodynamics written by Eric Ronald Priest and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-06-28 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the solar system is in the plasma state and its subtle non-linear interaction with the magnetic field is described for many purposes by the equations of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Over the past few years this important and complex field has become one of the most actively pursued areas of research, with increasingly diverse applications in geophysics, space physics and astrophysics. This book examines the basic MHD topics, such as equilibria, waves, instabilities and reconnection and examines each in the context of different areas that utilize MHD. Many of the world's leading experts have contributed to this volume, which has been edited by two of the key enthusiasts. It is hoped that it can help the reader to appreciate and understand the common threads between the different branches of magnetohydrodynamics. This book will be a timely exposition of recent advances made in the field.

Book Physics of the Magnetosphere

  • ISBN : 9401034672
  • Pages : 693 pages

Download or read book Physics of the Magnetosphere written by R.L. Carovillano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is based upon the proceedings of the Summer Institute, Physics of the Magnetosphere, held on the Boston College campus, lune 19-28, 1967. The pro gram consisted of invited speakers selected by the Editors. An attempt was made to provide comprehensive treatment of all topics of primary relevance to magneto spheric physics, but, of course, some areas received greater coverage than others. The first portion of the conference consisted of tutoriallectures, four each, by five distinguished scientists, and these are presented in Part I of the monograph. The artides appearing in Part I were prepared by the Editors from tapes of the actual lectures. Preliminary manuscripts were prepared and each tutoriallecturer was given the opportunity to make changes or improvements that were incorporated into the final manuscript. H. R. Radoski prepared the lectures of Professor Helliwell; 1. F. McClay prepared the lectures of Professor Dessler and the first two of Professor Dungey; and the remaining lectures of Professors Dungey, Parker, and Van Allen were prepared by me. An effort was made for the most part to write each manuscript in the style of the lectures, but the incongruities of spoken English and the number of scribes in the kitchen undoubtedly limited our success. Everyone knows that English is written far better than it is spoken, although for some reason the spoken word is more dear.

Book Solar Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Solar Magnetic Fields written by Brandon Burkholder and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetized plasmas with twisted and filamented magnetic fields are pervasive throughout the heliosphere. In the solar magnetic field, photospheric convection on scale sizes from granules to differential rotation is responsible for driven magnetic reconnection. These reconnection sites are closely related to the magnetic topology, which is highly complex as the magnetic field is structured by a network of many thousands of magnetic flux concentrations. The coronal plasma overlying this "magnetic carpet" is the source of the solar wind flow, which has been found to be turbulent as close to the sun as our observations can currently resolve. At 1 AU, observations have also revealed a highly structured solar wind which we posit in this thesis originates in the corona rather than forming in-transit. Further, the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction depends on variability in the solar wind. When the boundary between solar wind plasma and magnetospheric plasma is unstable to the growth of Kelvin-Helmholtz waves, driven magnetic reconnection can occur on the magnetopause boundary. Such reconnection allows magnetic field to thread the boundary and transport can take place. We quantify the solar wind interaction for a corotation dominated system in terms of the mass and momentum transport driven by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. Model-data comparisons are performed in this thesis using both the magnetohydrodynamic and hybrid-kinetic approaches for fluid simulations.

Book Magnetic Fields in the Solar System

Download or read book Magnetic Fields in the Solar System written by Hermann Lühr and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses and reviews many of the still little understood questions related to the processes underlying planetary magnetic fields and their interaction with the solar wind. With focus on research carried out within the German Priority Program ”PlanetMag”, it also provides an overview of the most recent research in the field. Magnetic fields play an important role in making a planet habitable by protecting the environment from the solar wind. Without the geomagnetic field, for example, life on Earth as we know it would not be possible. And results from recent space missions to Mars and Venus strongly indicate that planetary magnetic fields play a vital role in preventing atmospheric erosion by the solar wind. However, very little is known about the underlying interaction between the solar wind and a planet’s magnetic field. The book takes a synergistic interdisciplinary approach that combines newly developed tools for data acquisition and analysis, computer simulations of planetary interiors and dynamos, models of solar wind interaction, measurement of ancient terrestrial rocks and meteorites, and laboratory investigations.

Book Magnetic Helicity in Space and Laboratory Plasmas

Download or read book Magnetic Helicity in Space and Laboratory Plasmas written by Michael R. Brown and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1999-01-26 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 111. Using the concept of magnetic helicity, physicists and mathematicians describe the topology of magnetic fields: twisting, writhing, and linkage. Mathematically, helicity is related to linking integrals, which Gauss introduced in the 19th century to describe the paths of asteroids in the sky. In the late 1970s the concept proved to be critical to understand laboratory plasma experiments on magnetic reconnection, dynamos, and magnetic field relaxation. In the late 1980s it proved equally important in understanding turbulence in the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field. During the last five years interest in magnetic helicity has grown dramatically in solar physics, and it will continue to grow as observations of vector magnetic fields become increasingly sophisticated.
