Book Canted Antiferromagnetism Hematite

Download or read book Canted Antiferromagnetism Hematite written by Allan H Morrish and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-01-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hematite (α-Fe2O3), the stable oxide of iron, is a major constituent of soils, rocks and the earth's crust. It has unique magnetic properties that make it the prototype for the class of materials known as canted antiferromagnets. This book has no equivalent. The mean-field theory is treated in detail, and thus the book is a useful text for students mastering this general method. Information obtained by a wide variety of experimental methods is provided. These techniques include x-ray and neutron diffraction; electron magnetic resonance; Mössbauer spectroscopy; and thermal, optical, electrical and elastic measurements.

Book Hematite Versus Magnetite As the Signature for Planetary Magnetic Anomalies

Download or read book Hematite Versus Magnetite As the Signature for Planetary Magnetic Anomalies written by Gunther Kletetshka and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crustal magnetic anomalies are the result of adjacent geologic units having contrasting magnetization. This magnetization arises from induction and/or remanence. In a planetary context we now know that Mars has significant crustal magnetic anomalies due to remanent magnetization, while the Earth has some anomalies where remanence can be shown to be important. This picture, however, is less clear because of the nature and the magnitude of the geomagnetic field which is responsible for superimposed induced magnetization. Induced magnetization assumes a magnetite source, because of its much greater magnetic susceptibility when compared with other magnetic minerals. We investigated the TRM (thermoremanent magnetization) acquisition of hematite, in weak magnetic fields up to 1 mT, to determine if the remanent and induced magnetization of hematite could compete with magnetite. TRM acquisition curves of magnetite and hematite show that multi-domain hematite reaches TRM saturation (0.3 - 0.4 A sq m/kg) in fields as low as 100 microT. However, multi-domain magnetite reaches only a few percent of its TRM saturation in a field of 100 microT (0.02 - 0.06 A sq m/kg). These results suggest that a mineral such as hematite and, perhaps, other minerals with significant remanence and minor induced magnetization may play an important role in providing requisite magnetization contrast. Perhaps, and especially for the Mars case, we should reevaluate where hematite and other minerals, with efficient remanence acquisition, exist in significant concentration, allowing a more comprehensive explanation of Martian anomalies and better insight into the role of remanent magnetization in terrestrial crustal magnetic anomalies.

  • Author : Roberto Lanza
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2006-08-09
  • ISBN : 3540279792
  • Pages : 287 pages

Download or read book The Earth s Magnetism written by Roberto Lanza and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-08-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially, this book reviews the general characteristics of the Earth’s magnetic field and the magnetic properties of minerals, and then proceeds to introduce the multifold applications of geomagnetism in earth sciences. The authors analyze the contribution of geomagnetism both in more general geological fields, such as tectonics and geodynamics, and in applied ones, such as prospecting and pollution. Primarily, the book is aimed at undergraduate geology or geophysics students. It is geared to provide them with a general overview of geomagnetism, allowing them to understand what contributions this branch of science can offer in the more special sectors of earth sciences. Graduate students and geology researchers will also benefit from it, as it enables them to gain a clear and concise image of the techniques which can be applied in their areas of specialization.
