Book Velocity ion Temperature Gradient Driven Modes and Angular Momentum Transport in Magnetically Confined Plasmas

Download or read book Velocity ion Temperature Gradient Driven Modes and Angular Momentum Transport in Magnetically Confined Plasmas written by John Chandler Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma confinement experiments continue to uncover fascinating phenomena that motivate theoretical discussion and exploration. In this thesis, we consider the phenomenon of angular momentum transport in magnetically confined plasmas. Relevant experiments and theoretical developments are presented in order to motivate the derivation of a modified version of the three-field nonlinear Hamaguchi-Horton equations. The equations are altered to include a zeroth-order parallel velocity inhomogeneity along the radially-analogous coordinate, resulting in a nonlinear system that describes the evolution of the velocity-ion temperature gradient-driven modes (VITGs). The equations are used to analyze VITG modes in the local approximation of a magnetized plasma, as well as in an inhomogeneous slab model. Applying quasilinear methods, we find a turbulent angular momentum flux in agreement with the accretion theory of the spontaneous rotation phenomenon. More advanced applications are considered for future analysis.

Book MHD and Microinstabilities in Confined Plasma

Download or read book MHD and Microinstabilities in Confined Plasma written by Wallace M. Manheimer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetohydrodynamics, the study of the motion of electrically conducting fluids in magnetic fields, is an important area in plasma physics. The effects of instabilities in such electrical fluids are very difficult to calculate and this is the first book to deal with the subject as a whole in a detailed manner. MHD and Microinstabilities in Confined Plasma starts from first principles and builds up to a full understanding of MHD. It features a number of topics not covered in other books on plasma, including non-linear theory, anomalous transport and magnetic reconnection.

Book Turbulent Transport in Magnetized Plasmas

Download or read book Turbulent Transport in Magnetized Plasmas written by Wendell Horton and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explains how magnetized plasmas self-organize in states of electromagnetic turbulence that transports particles and energy out of the core plasma faster than anticipated by the fusion scientists designing magnetic confinement systems in the 20th century. It describes theory, experiments and simulations in a unified and up-to-date presentation of the issues of achieving nuclear fusion power.

Book Study of Micro instabilities in Toroidal Plasmas with Negative Magnetic Shear

Download or read book Study of Micro instabilities in Toroidal Plasmas with Negative Magnetic Shear written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The micro-instabilities driven by a parallel velocity shear, and a temperature gradient of ions are studied in toroidal plasmas with negative magnetic shear. Both the fluid and the gyro-kinetic formulations are investigated. It is found that for a broad range of parameters, the linear growth rates of the modes are lower, and the threshold temperature gradient [eta]{sub icr} is higher for plasmas with negative magnetic shear compared to plasmas with positive magnetic shear of equal magnitude. The reduction in the growth rate (with negative shear), although not insignificant, does not seem to be enough to account for the dramatic improvement in the confinement observed experimentally. Other possible physical mechanisms for the improved confinement are discussed.

Book Magnetic Stochasticity in Magnetically Confined Fusion Plasmas

Download or read book Magnetic Stochasticity in Magnetically Confined Fusion Plasmas written by Sadrilla Abdullaev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to systematically consider the modern aspects of chaotic dynamics of magnetic field lines and charged particles in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. The analytical models describing the generic features of equilibrium magnetic fields and magnetic perturbations in modern fusion devices are presented. It describes mathematical and physical aspects of onset of chaos, generic properties of the structure of stochastic magnetic fields, transport of charged particles in tokamaks induced by magnetic perturbations, new aspects of particle turbulent transport, etc. The presentation is based on the classical and new unique mathematical tools of Hamiltonian dynamics, like the action--angle formalism, classical perturbation theory, canonical transformations of variables, symplectic mappings, the Poincaré-Melnikov integrals. They are extensively used for analytical studies as well as for numerical simulations of magnetic field lines, particle dynamics, their spatial structures and statistical properties. The numerous references to articles on the latest development in the area are provided. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers who interested in the modern problems of magnetic stochasticity in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. It is also useful for physicists and mathematicians interested in new methods of Hamiltonian dynamics and their applications.

Book Plasma Transport and Stability in a minimum b Magnetic Field

Download or read book Plasma Transport and Stability in a minimum b Magnetic Field written by W. D. McBee and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report covers the second year's effort under a program of research into fusion-plasma containment, transport and stability in which a relatively small, versatile, accessible and inexpensive thermally-ionized cesium plasma is used as an experimental simulant for a hot fusion plasma. The characteristics of the simulant plasma and the basis of simulation have been presented earlier; this report will cover the detailed investigation of 'anomalous' plasma transport in the simulant plasma of the TOPSY Q-device-with special attention to a possible correlation of plasma transport and low-frequency plasma oscillations and to ionizer-temperature-gradient effects-in uniform axial and 'minimum-B magnetic field geometries, as well as some preliminary results of a continuing investigation into ion-velocity-anisotropy driven 'microinstabilities'. Book Impurity Effects on Ion drift wave Eigenmodes in a Sheared Magnetic Field

Download or read book Impurity Effects on Ion drift wave Eigenmodes in a Sheared Magnetic Field written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stability of ion-drift-wave eigenmodes in a slab geometry with a sheared magnetic field is investigated. It is found that in contrast to the case of universal and dissipative electron drift wave eigenmodes, unstable impurity-driven normal modes can appear if specific conditions are satisfied. In addition, the influence of impurities on unstable ion-temperature-gradient-driven drift eigenmodes is also studied. It is found that, if their density profile is inwardly peaked, the impurities can exert a strong stabilizing influence on these modes.
