Book Satellite Attitude Control Utilizing the Earth s Magnetic Field

Download or read book Satellite Attitude Control Utilizing the Earth s Magnetic Field written by John S. White (writer on artificial satellites.) and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The torque developed by the interaction of current-carrying coils with the earth's magnetic field can be used as a means of attitude control. The degree to which the attitude of a vehicle can be maintained utilizing this torque depends on the fluctuations of the magnetic field at the satellite as the satellite orbits about the earth. Due to the nature of the torque developed only two vehicle axes can be c ntinuously controlled simultaneously. With the principle described, either a two- or three-coil system can be used to control vehicle attitude about two axes. Intermittent control about three axes can be obtained. (Author).

Book Microsatellites as Research Tools

Download or read book Microsatellites as Research Tools written by F.-B. Hsiao and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-03-12 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to reflect the increasing importance and interest of the microsatellites in high technology and scientific applications in space, the Colloquium on Microsatellites as Research Tools was organized to promote its usage and technology development and to foster the international cooperation, especially in the area of the Asia pacific region. Attended by 150 participants from 18 countries the colloquium was organized into five major themes: regional development, lessons learned, innovations, scientific applications, and education. A special session was organized as well by the organizing committee and supported by the National Space Program Office to present its development of the Taiwan's satellite program and the current status of ROCSAT-1 which is scheduled to be launched at the beginning of 1999. Two main conclusions were drawn from the material presented: microsatellite in general is a very good means for doing space research and technology development, and a suitable vehicle to promote international collaborations.

Book CubeSat Attitude Control Utilizing Low power Magnetic Torquers a Magnetometer

Download or read book CubeSat Attitude Control Utilizing Low power Magnetic Torquers a Magnetometer written by Donald B. Mentch and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CubeSat Project has lowered development time and costs associated with university satellite missions that conform to their 10 centimeter cube design specification. Providing attitude control to a spacecraft, of such small volume, with a very limited power budget has been a challenge around the world. This work describes the development of an attitude control system based on a very low-power magnetic torquer used in conjunction with a magnetometer. This will be the first flight use of this torquer which is composed of a hard magnetic material wrapped inside of a solenoid. By discharging a capacitor through the solenoid, the magnetic dipole moment of this permanent magnet can be reversed. The completed attitude control system will make the first use of the low-power magnetic torquer to arrest satellite tip-off rates. It will then make the first known use of a dual axis magnetic dipole moment bias algorithm to achieve three-axis attitude alignment. The complete system is standalone for high inclination orbits, and will align the spacecraft to within 5 degrees of ram, nadir, and local vertical, without any requirement for attitude determination. The system arrests tip-off rates of up to 5° per second (in all 3 axes) for a satellite in a 600 kilometer polar orbit expending 0.56 milliwatts of power. Once in the proper alignment, it utilizes 0.028 milliwatts to maintain it. The system will function for low inclination orbits with the addition of a gravity boom. The system utilizes the magnetometer to calculate spacecraft body rates. This is the only known use of a magnetometer to directly measure spacecraft body rates without prior knowledge of spacecraft attitude.

Book Satellite Attitude Control System Based on Model free Method

Download or read book Satellite Attitude Control System Based on Model free Method written by Yangyang Hu and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deals with nonlinear methods for magnetic attitude control and reaction wheel attitude control. The work is divided into a number of parts. The first part, deals with the satellite attitude control basic information and development of a mathematical model of a low Earth orbit satellite. The second part introduces the controllers used in this dissertation. The third part deals with the dimension between the output of controller and input of reaction wheel. The fourth part solves the problem of the magnetic torque calculation. The last part carries out the simulation tests of those controllers for small satellite and cube satellite.

Book A Method for Controlling the Attitude of a Satellite Using the Earth s Magnetic Field

Download or read book A Method for Controlling the Attitude of a Satellite Using the Earth s Magnetic Field written by Wilfred Joseph Minkus and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report investigates a means of controlling the attitude of a satellite in a circular orbit about the earth by the torque due to the interaction between the earth's magnetic field and the magnetic moments produced by currents in three orthogonal coils aboard the satellite. This system has the advantage over more conventional ones in that no mass is expended in the control process. It is designed to rotate the satellite about its longitudinal axis in a minimum amount of time while limiting the deviation of this axis from the local normal to the earth. The analysis is limited to the period during which the satellite's attitude is being changed by magnetically produced torques. When these torques are not applied, gravity gradient effects act as a restoring force to align the longitudinal axis with the local normal to the earth. The method is applicable to a satellite with symmetry such that the moment of inertia about its longitudinal axis is much smaller than those about body-fixed axes lying in a plane perpendicular to it and whose moments of inertia about axes in this plane are approximately equal. The model of the earth's magnetic field that is used is a dipole with its poles located at the observed geographical positions. The control system is developed to be applicable to the general type of satellite indicated above and to all orbits except those passing close to the magnetic poles. It is then applied to a particular satellite and type of orbit of interest to RADC. (Author).
