Book The Terror of Loch Ness

Download or read book The Terror of Loch Ness written by Che Elias and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. Art. Illustrated by Michael Hafftka. THE TERROR OF LOCH NESS is a spiritual resolution, born in the form of a stream-of-consciousness novel derived from an extreme experience of rape, psychic devastation and violence. Che Elias's sentences can often be interpreted in several ways, while the gut-wrenching story and the essence remain specific. His "hallucinatory style approaches the quality of surrealist poetry; but nonetheless there remains a strong sense of character, and of narrative, however ruptured"-Michael S. Begnal.

Book The Symbolism and Sources of Outlander

Download or read book The Symbolism and Sources of Outlander written by Valerie Estelle Frankel and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outlander is much more than a television romance about a World War II nurse and a Jacobite soldier in a fetching kilt. The series--and the massive serial novel on which it is based--has been categorized as a period drama, adventure saga, military history and fantasy epic. Inspired by the Irish legends of Fionn Mac Cumhaill and the prophecies of Brahan Seer, the storyline is filled with mythology and symbolism from around the world, from the Fair Folk and the Loch Ness monster to wendigos, ghosts, zombies and succubae. Literary references abound, from the Bible to the classics, to Shakespeare and the English romantic poets. The series is also rich with its own symbolism: heather and white roses, the dragonfly in amber, Claire's blue vase and wedding gown, her wedding rings and pearl necklace. This book untangles the myriad of myths, legends, symbols and literary references found in the series.

Book Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology written by Michael Newton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On every continent and in every nation, animals unrecognized by modern science are reported on a daily basis. People passionately pursue these creatures--the name given to their field of study is cryptozoology. Coined in the 1950s, the term literally means the science of hidden animals. When the International Society of Cryptozoology (ISC) was formed in 1982, the founders declared that the branch of science is also concerned with "the possible existence of known animals in areas where they are not supposed to occur (either now or in the past) as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or to the recent past...what makes an animal of interest to cryptology is that it is unexpected." This reference work presents a "flesh and blood" view of cryptozoology. Here, 2,744 entries are listed, the majority of which each describe one specific creature or type of creature. Other entries cover 742 places where unnamed cryptids are said to appear; profiles of 77 groups and 112 individuals who have contributed to the field; descriptions of objects and events important to the subject; and essays on cryptotourism and hoaxes, for example. Appendices offer a timeline of zoological discoveries, annotated lists of movies and television series with cryptozoological themes, a list of crypto-fiction titles and a list of Internet websites devoted to cryptozoology.

Download or read book Folk Horror written by Adam Scovell and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the ancient, the occult, and the "wyrd" is on the rise. The furrows of Robin Hardy (The Wicker Man), Piers Haggard (Blood on Satan's Claw), and Michael Reeves (Witchfinder General) have arisen again, most notably in the films of Ben Wheatley (Kill List), as has the Spirit of Dark of Lonely Water, Juganets, cursed Saxon crowns, spaceships hidden under ancient barrows, owls and flowers, time-warping stone circles, wicker men, the goat of Mendes, and malicious stone tapes. Folk Horror: Hours Dreadful And Things Strange charts the summoning of these esoteric arts within the latter half of the twentieth century and beyond, using theories of psychogeography, hauntology, and topography to delve into the genre's output in film, television, and multimedia as its "sacred demon of ungovernableness" rises yet again in the twenty-first century.
