Book excerpt: "In the fall of 1889, she was employed as a domestic servant. She was a beautiful nineteen-year-old redhead of Irish extraction. On the morning of October 19th, her body was found floating face down in a shallow pond about a mile from her place of employment. Was it murder or suicide? Why would "politically connected" men allow themselves to be on the coroner's jury? Even more important, why were there only "connected" men on the jury? Why did the doctor who performed the autopsy insist that she drowned when there was no water found in her lungs? Why did the District Attorney assign the case to a local counsel rather than pursue the truth himself? Why did three successful male friends all commit suicide five years after her death? Was it coincidence, bad luck, or was it Maggie's revenge?"--Back cover.

Book Fictions of Home

  • Author : Martin Mühlheim
  • Publisher : Narr Francke Attempto Verlag
  • Release : 2018-04-23
  • ISBN : 3772000398
  • Pages : 1222 pages

Download or read book Fictions of Home written by Martin Mühlheim and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 1222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to counter right-wing discourses of belonging. It discusses key theoretical concepts for the study of home, focusing in particular on Marxist, feminist, postcolonial, and psychoanalytic contributions. The book also maintains that postmodern celebrations of nomadism and exile tend to be incapable of providing an alternative to conservative, xenophobic appropriations of home. In detailed readings of one film and six novels, a view is developed according to which home, as a spatio-temporal imaginary, is rooted in our species being, and as such constitutes the inevitable starting point for any progressive politics.

Book The Social Life of Fluids

Download or read book The Social Life of Fluids written by Jules David Law and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Victorians were obsessed with fluids—with their scarcity and with their omnipresence. By the mid-nineteenth century, hundreds of thousands of citizens regularly petitioned the government to provide running water and adequate sewerage, while scientists and journalists fretted over the circulation of bodily fluids. In The Social Life of Fluids Jules Law traces the fantasies of power and anxieties of identity precipitated by these developments as they found their way into the plotting and rhetoric of the Victorian novel. Analyzing the expression of scientific understanding and the technological manipulation of fluids—blood, breast milk, and water—in six Victorian novels (by Charles Dickens, George Eliot, George Moore, and Bram Stoker), Law traces the growing anxiety about fluids in Victorian culture from the beginning of the sanitarian movement in the 1830s through the 1890s. Fluids, he finds, came to be regarded as the most alienable aspect of an otherwise inalienable human body, and, paradoxically, as the least rational element of an increasingly rationalized environment. Drawing on literary and feminist theory, social history, and the history of science and medicine, Law shows how fluids came to be represented as prosthetic extensions of identity, exposing them to contested claims of kinship and community and linking them inextricably to public spaces and public debates.

So, who or what is Addie? Does he even exist? When a small-time moneylender pimp is shot down on a Glasgow street, it seems to be just another gangland murder. But not for Andy Grimes, overseer of much of the city's prostitution, drug dealing and protection rackets - and the dead man's brother. When word leaks out that Addie is the killer, Grimes calls in his police allies and musters his troops. On the case is DCI Alex Birse, and old-time cop, as crooked as he is vicious. He has been after Addie for years and never got close. As the streets of Glasgow heave with police and gangsters, over in Berlin the Wall is coming down. At this time of great change, opportunity and uncertainty, the two cities are linked by loot – Bearer Bonds to be precise. Back in Glasgow, while pulling a scam on an old Jewish couple, one of Grimes' men, Angie the Gopher, finds a biscuit tin full of Bearer Bonds issued in Germany before the Second World War. Angie smells money – the bonds could be worth millions – and he scuttles back to tell his boss. Now the chase is on. Who gets the bonds? How much are they worth? Who perishes along the way? For the answers you'll have to rely on Addie. But can they catch him? The last line will reveal all . . . maybe.

Book In the Country of the Young

Download or read book In the Country of the Young written by Daniel Stern and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVDIV“An important and rewarding collection.” —Houston Chronicle/divDIV The short stories from In the Country of the Young feature characters struggling to find hope and connection—or just escape—through art, work, and love. The title story, a moving account of an angst-ridden seventeen-year-old nearly overwhelmed by his family’s aspirations for him, is a paean to the brief moment when the promise of youth and selfhood are untarnished by the disenchantments of life. In “Foxx Hunting,” a widower travels to LA to find a porn actress, though the movie he saw her in was shot decades earlier. “Lunch with Gottlieb” captures a young man of ambition hunting for the legendary advertising genius Gottlieb, lost in the jungles of business lunch./divDIV Garnering comparisons to the work of Bernard Malamud and Saul Bellow, the stories of In the Country of the Young are written with the rare empathy and skill of a short fiction master./div/div
