Book Periodicals for the Small Library

Download or read book Periodicals for the Small Library written by Frank Keller Walter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Periodicals for the Small Library The steadily increasing use of periodicals and particularly of the popular magazines makes it necessary for even the smallest library to have some for the use of its patrons. The popular magazine will attract to the library many who have already become accustomed to magazine reading but who seldom read any books other than the most trashy fiction. Even though the chief attraction of the average magazine is its short story or its serial fiction, there are few magazines which lay claim even to respectability that do not contain articles on politics, science and other subjects of general importance so attractively presented and illustrated as to hold the attention of even the careless reader. In the smaller libraries this use for general reading will be the chief argument for subscribing to magazines. In addition to this usually temporary use the permanent value of the magazine as reference material must be considered. In a considerable number of cases the magazine which is popular for general reading will also be a valuable reference aid, especially for club papers and debates on current topics.' In other cases the magazine may very properly be purchased chiefly for its reference value. Magazines which are used primarily for general reading should be circulated. Most libraries circulate all unbound numbers, except the current one, for a limited period (usually from three to seven days). Book The Little Magazine in Contemporary America

Download or read book The Little Magazine in Contemporary America written by Ian Morris and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little magazines have often showcased the best new writing in America. Historically, these idiosyncratic, small-circulation outlets have served the dual functions of representing the avant-garde of literary expression while also helping many emerging writers become established authors. Although changing technology and the increasingly harsh financial realities of publishing over the past three decades would seem to have pushed little magazines to the brink of extinction, their story is far more complicated. In this collection, Ian Morris and Joanne Diaz gather the reflections of twenty-three prominent editors whose little magazines have flourished over the past thirty-five years. Highlighting the creativity and innovation driving this diverse and still vital medium, contributors offer insights into how their publications sometimes succeeded, sometimes reluctantly folded, but mostly how they evolved and persevered. Other topics discussed include the role of little magazines in promoting the work and concerns of minority and women writers, the place of universities in supporting and shaping little magazines, and the online and offline future of these publications. Selected contributors Betsy Sussler, BOMB; Lee Gutkind, Creative Nonfiction; Bruce Andrews, L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E; Dave Eggers, McSweeney’s; Keith Gessen, n+1; Don Share, Poetry; Jane Friedman, VQR; Amy Hoffman, Women’s Review of Books; and more.

Book The Gentleman s Magazine Vol 26

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gentleman's Magazine, Vol. 26: 1846, July to December Inclusive Tan whole of Literature, as regards its form (form), may be comprised in books, pamphlets, and magazines, -which division may be said to correspond with works finished and complete with partial observations and temporary comments; and, thirdly, with the first scattered elements of thought, and the original ideas sug gested by the subject. The Magazine is comparatively of late introduction into the literature of our country; and its place previously supplied by pamphlets and tracts, of all sizes and descriptions, including small treatises, down to single sheets, and even solitary leaves. But, valuable as these often were separately, and of increased importance when collected, one undeniable defect attended this form of publication, - that they were easily lost, and when lost seldom recovered or replaced; and thus they became fugitwepieces in a double sense of the word. Pamphlets and small tracts, says Dr. Johnson, make a very important part of an English library; nor are there any pieces upon which those who aspire to the reputation of judicious collectors of books bestow more attention or greater expense} because many advantages may be expected from the perusal of these small productions, which are scarcely to be found in that of larger works. But ofa class of works so judiciously and highly esteemed it would be useless to conjecture the proportion that must have perished from neglect and accident, dating from their first appearance, which is supposed to have been about the time of the Reformation. Dr. Johnson in his days thought that no time was to be lost in securing them from further dangerof destruction, and advised their being placed in safety by being collected into volumes, and distributed according to their subjects. In the present day the Magazine has in a great measure offered a better and safer channel for such communications as the pamphlet was formerly the only vehicle for affording: it has also the advantage of more easily adapting its dimensions to the exact importance of the subject, and of interposing spaces and pauses, if required, between dieerent parts and divisions of the subject. Here, amidst the, various communications of the Magazine, the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Sometimes a coat that would ill become a boy, well becomes a man. But th1s is not a coat of this kind. It never looked well on any rational being, high or low, young or old. I was struck the other day with the appearance of a man. A laborer in his employment had accidently injured an article of some value. There was tinder about him and here was a spark. There was not boisterous passion, but a spirit of fretfulness. You careless, good-for-nothing fellow, just see what you have done. You are as stupid as a Hottentot.
