Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Spain, Past and Present Nothing could be more distinct than the new and Oporto captains. One was a dandy captain; the other an old salt captain. Blowra I found the sailors called the latter, be cause he liked rough weather, and was always in highest spirits when the wind was highest. If a hurricane rose and grappled with the ship like a wrestling devil with a praying Puritan, then he was calm, sturdy, and unflinching - ready for any thing. Risen from a common sailor, Jolly (alias) Blow hard had been pitching and tossing all over the world. His complexion was chocolate-color, and the whites of his eyes were coffee-color. What in other men looked like wet white porcelain, was in him of a rich brown, partly owing to repeat ed yellow fevers, partly owing to malaria attacks on the coast of 'afiica. But, in spite of his eyes, and short, squat figure, Captain Jolly was a real honest sailor; punctiliously cautious of his ship's safety, and sparing no pains nor anxiety to insure us a quick voyage. In all weathers he was upon the paddle box bridge, glass in hand, looking out for pilots, or the mouths of rivers, or shore, of something; never down to dinner with us, if the navigation was at all risky. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Espaana Pintoresca: The Life and Customs of Spain in Story and Legend This book is for the use of students who have taken the first steps in the study of Spanish. It is meant to supply a need which the author has felt in teaching the language. Familiarity with a language and its literature is difficult to attain without the sympathy lent by an intimate understanding of the manners and customs of the people, and never were language and life more closely intertwined than in the vibrant heart of old Spain, where the passion and poetry of the race find expression in its ardent and melodious speech. Book excerpt: From the award-winning, internationally best-selling Spanish writer, author of The Infatuations, comes a gripping new novel of intrigue and missed chances--at once a spy story and a profound examination of a marriage founded on secrets and lies. When Berta Isla was a schoolgirl, she decided she would marry Tomás Nevinson--the dashing half-Spanish, half-English boy in her class with an extraordinary gift for languages. But when Tomás returns to Madrid from his studies at Oxford, he is a changed man. Unbeknownst to her, he has been approached by an agent from the British intelligence services, and he has unwittingly set in motion events that will derail forever the life they had planned. With peerless insight into the most shadowed corners of the human soul, Marías plunges the reader into the growing chasm between Berta and Tomás and the decisions that irreversibly change the course of the couple's fate. Berta Isla is a novel of love and truth, fear and secrecy, buried identities, and the destinies we bring upon ourselves.

Book Remaking Madrid

  • Author : H. Stapell
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2010-09-27

  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Remaking Madrid written by H. Stapell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-09-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remaking Madrid is the first full-length study of Madrid's transformation from the dreary home of the Franco dictatorship into a modern and vibrant city. It argues that this remarkable transformation in the 1980s helped secure Spain's fragile transition to democracy and that the transformation itself was primarily a product of "regionalism"-even though the capital is typically associated with "Spanishness" and with "the nation." The official project to distance Madrid from its dictatorial past included urban renewal and administrative reform; but, above all, it involved greater cultural participation, which led the revival of the capital's public festivals and the development of a modern cultural outpouring known as the movida madrileña. The book also explains the ultimate failure of regionalism in the capital by the end of the 1980s and asks whether or not Madrid's inclusive form of "civic" identity might have served as a model for the country as a whole.
