Book Death and Money in the Afternoon

Download or read book Death and Money in the Afternoon written by Adrian Shubert and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shubert analyzes the business of the sport, and explores the bullfighters' world: their social and geographic origins, careers, and social status. Here also are surprising revelations about the sport, such as the presence of women bullfighters - and the larger gender issues that this provoked. From the political use of bullfighting in royal and imperial pageants to the nationalistic "great patriotic bullfights" of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this is both a fascinating portrait of bullfighting and a vivid recreation of two centuries of Spanish history.

Book Revisiting Jewish Spain in the Modern Era

Download or read book Revisiting Jewish Spain in the Modern Era written by Daniela Flesler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative volume offers fresh perspectives and directions on the intersection of Hispanic and Jewish studies. It shows how 'Jewishness' has played a crucial role in Spanish political, social, and cultural developments in the modern era, exploring the effects of the multiple material and symbolic absences of Jews and Judaism from modern Spanish society. The book considers the haunting presence that this absence has entailed. Contributors analyze the different and contradictory ways in which Spain as a nation has tried to come to terms with its Jewish memory and with Jews from the nineteenth century to the present: José Amador de los Ríos’ efforts to incorporate 'Jewishness' into the canon of Spanish national literature and history; the emergence in the mid-nineteenth century of the figure of the Jewish conspirator who seeks to foment revolutionary unrest in novels from Spain, Italy and France; the development of philosephardism and its interconnections with anti-Semitism, Spanish fascism and colonial ambitions at the turn of the twentieth century; the instrumentalization of the Spanish Jewish past during the Second Republic; the role of philosemitism in the development of Catalan nationalism; and the relationship between the memory of Sepharad and Holocaust commemoration in contemporary Spain. This book is based on a special issue of the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies.

Book excerpt: This book explores the new debates on Basque sovereignty and statehood that have emerged in the post-violence Basque political scenario. The contributors to this book investigate the new political field developing in the nexus between conventional party politics, established socio-cultural and linguistic organizations, creative civil society initiatives, and innovative activism. This book is for graduate students, scholars and professionals in political science, social anthropology, European studies, political philosophy, transnational studies, sociology, political geography, and global studies. It will also be of interest to academic specialists in Basque studies, specialists working on sovereignty, nationalism and globalization, and professionals in governance, international relations, foreign affairs, European politics and diplomacy.

Book Madrid s Forgotten Avant Garde

  • Author : Silvina Schammah Gesser
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 2016-04-01
  • ISBN : 1836240929
  • Pages : 361 pages

Download or read book Madrid s Forgotten Avant Garde written by Silvina Schammah Gesser and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role played by artists and intellectuals who constructed and disseminated various competing images of national identity which polarized Spanish society prior to the Civil War. The convergence of modern and essentialist discourses and practices, especially in literature and poetry, in what is conventionally called in Spanish letters "The Generation of '27", created fissures between competing views of aesthetics and ideology that cut across political affiliation. Silvina Schammah exposes the paradoxes facing Madrid's cultural vanguards, as they were torn by their ambition for universality, cosmopolitanism and transcendence on the one hand and by the centripetal forces of nationalistic ideologies on the other. Taking upon themselves roles to become the disseminators and populizers of radical positions and world-views first elaborated and conducted by the young urban intelligentsia, their proposed aim of incorporating diverse identities embedded in different cultural constructions and discourse was to have very real and tragic consequences as political and intellectual lines polarized in the years prior to the Spanish Civil War.
