Book Madison During the Civil War Era

Download or read book Madison During the Civil War Era written by John S. Fuller and published by Wisconsin Historical Society Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John S. fuller made these unique photographs between 1860 and 1863, when Abraham Llincoln was in the White House and the nation was facing the supreme crisis in its history. They depict Madison during a period of transition. Despite the impact of a recent depression and prospect of civil war, it was an era of growth for the city, for the state university, and for state government. There were dirt streets, wooden sidewalks, lots of fences and outhouses, and as many horses as people on the streets. But there were also some paved walkways and multi-storied buildings, and a new capitol was under construction. A frontier village was well on its way to becoming a city.

Born in the middle of the eighteenth century as a subject of King George II, the Father of the United States Constitution lived until 1836, when he died a citizen of Andrew Jackson's republic. For over forty years he played a pivotal role in the creation and defense of a new political order. He lived long enough to see even that Revolutionary world transformed, and the system of government he had nurtured threatened by the disruptive forces of a new era that would ultimately lead to civil war. In recounting the experience of Madison and several of his legatees who witnessed the violent test of whether his republic could endure, McCoy dramatizes the actual working out in human lives of critical cultural and political issues.

A spring block party turned into a three-night riot. Factor in urban renewal troubles, a bitter battle over efforts to build Frank Lloyd Wright’s Monona Terrace, and the expanding influence of the University of Wisconsin, and the decade assumes legendary status. In this first-ever comprehensive narrative of these issues—plus accounts of everything from politics to public schools, construction to crime, and more—Madison historian Stuart D. Levitan chronicles the birth of modern Madison with style and well-researched substance. This heavily illustrated book also features annotated photographs that document the dramatic changes occurring downtown, on campus, and to the Greenbush neighborhood throughout the decade. Madison in the Sixties is an absorbing account of ten years that changed the city forever.
