Book Family Maps of Madison County Arkansas Deluxe Edition

Download or read book Family Maps of Madison County Arkansas Deluxe Edition written by Gregory A. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 418 pages with 107 total maps Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Madison County, Arkansas, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 8777 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 69 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for? Here are the counts for parcels of land mapped, by the decade in which the corresponding land patents were issued: DecadeParcel-count 1830s70 1840s281 1850s615 1860s617 1870s580 1880s1516 1890s2533 1900s1390 1910s1026 1920s149 What Cities and Towns are in Madison County, Arkansas (and in this book)? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gannett was an American geographer who is described as the "father of mapmaking in America." He was the chief geographer for the United States Geological Survey essentially from its founding until 1902. He served as geographer of the U.S. censuses of 1880, 1890, and 1900, as well as the Philippine, Cuban, and Puerto Rican censuses. During this time, he became interested in place names. He was motivated to publish this alphabetical compilation of the origins of approximately 10,000 place names because it embodies so much local and general history. Gannett's efforts to resolve difficulties caused by proliferation, duplication, and confusion of place names led to the establishment of the U.S. Board of Geographic Names in 1890. He served as the board's chairman until 1910. He was also a founding member and president of the National Geographic Society.

Book Texas Place Names

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edward Callary
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2020-06-02
  • ISBN : 1477320644
  • Pages : 430 pages

Download or read book Texas Place Names written by Edward Callary and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Gasoline, Texas, named in honor of a gas station? Nope, but the name does honor the town’s original claim to fame: a gasoline-powered cotton gin. Is Paris, Texas, a reference to Paris, France? Yes: Thomas Poteet, who donated land for the town site, thought it would be an improvement over “Pin Hook,” the original name of the Lamar County seat. Ding Dong’s story has a nice ring to it, derived from two store owners named Bell, who lived in Bell County, of course. Tracing the turning points, fascinating characters, and cultural crossroads that shaped Texas history, Texas Place Names provides the colorful stories behind these and more than three thousand other county, city, and community names. Drawing on in-depth research to present the facts behind the folklore, linguist Edward Callary also clarifies pronunciations (it’s NAY-chis for Neches, referring to a Caddoan people whose name was attached to the Neches River during a Spanish expedition). A great resource for road trippers and historians alike, Texas Place Names alphabetically charts centuries of humanity through the enduring words (and, occasionally, the fateful spelling gaffes) left behind by men and women from all walks of life.
