Book ICONIC ENCOUNTERS With Trailblazers Of The Arts World

Download or read book ICONIC ENCOUNTERS With Trailblazers Of The Arts World written by Prema Viswanathan and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-03-19 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The pieces in this book possess three qualities rarely found in combination. First, a sympathetic encounter with creative individuals and a lucid communication of their point of view. Second, an awareness of the critical discourse around the artistic practice concerned, which allows the framing of germane questions. Third, a personal response to the art conveyed through eloquently descriptive prose…Prema Viswanathan writes with equal respect for purists and reformers, for rootedness and cross-cultural exploration. Rather than dogmatically choose one side over the other, she picks the best and most interesting from each world… Taken as a whole, this collection provides an important resource toward better understanding a slice of India’s artistic history.”– Girish Shahane

Book A World of Memories

Download or read book A World of Memories written by Madhvi Parekh and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2010 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a pictorial world that is vivid, rich in colour and detail, Madhvi Parekh's imaginative and extraordinary narrative outpourings continue to reverberate with a certain magical realism, holding the viewer in thrall. The sights and sounds of Sanjaya, the village in Gujarat where Madhvi grew up, are a constant companion that combines seamlessly with elements imbibed while living in the city and in frequent travels at home and abroad. Her work contextualizes her childhood experiences and her artistic journey of forty-five years. Stories from the epics and folktales are also her points of departure. A modern master of the contemporary Indian art world, her complex paintings maintain a delicate balance between the 'folkish' and the modernist, and are at the same time imbued with a deep-rooted secularism. Her paintings influenced by folk art, and, over the years, inspired by modern artists such as Paul Klee and Joan Miro, have evolved into the distinctive Madhvi Parekh style that owes as much to vibrant colour as to her extraordinary wonder and way of 'seeing'. In this world of conflict, her warm and joyful episodic tales with happy endings infuse optimism and hope for a better tomorrow. World of Memories encapsulates Madhvi Parekh's artistic journey with a selection of seventy paintings from a formidable body of work, in the various mediums that she works in.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of art, the Paris-trained artist Amrita Sher-Gil wrote in 1936, is to "create the forms of the future” by “draw[ing] its inspiration from the present.” Through art, new worlds can be imagined into existence as artists cultivate forms of belonging and networks of association that oppose colonialist and nationalist norms. Drawing on Edward Said’s notion of “affiliation” as a critical and cultural imperative against empire and nation-state, Worldly Affiliations traces the emergence of a national art world in twentieth-century India and emphasizes its cosmopolitan ambitions and orientations. Sonal Khullar focuses on four major Indian artists—Sher-Gil, Maqbool Fida Husain, K. G. Subramanyan, and Bhupen Khakhar—situating their careers within national and global histories of modernism and modernity. Through a close analysis of original artwork, archival materials, artists’ writing, and period criticism, Khullar provides a vivid historical account of the state and stakes of artistic practice in India from the late colonial through postcolonial periods. She discusses the shifting terms of Indian artists’ engagement with the West—an urgent yet fraught project in the wake of British colonialism—and to a lesser extent with African and Latin American cultural movements such as Négritude and Mexican muralism. Written in a lucid and engaging style, this book links artistic developments in India to newly emerging histories of modern art in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Drawing on original research in the twenty-first-century art world, Khullar shows the persistence of modernism in contemporary art from India and compares its function to Walter Benjamin’s ruin. In the work of contemporary artists from India, modernism is the ground from which to imagine futures. This richly illustrated study juxtaposes little-known, rarely seen, or previously unpublished works of modern and contemporary art with historical works, popular or mass-reproduced images, and documentary photographs. Its innovative art program renders newly visible the aesthetic and political achievements of Indian modernism.

Book How Secular Is Art

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tapati Guha-Thakurta
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2023-03-31
  • ISBN : 1009276751
  • Pages : 446 pages

Download or read book How Secular Is Art written by Tapati Guha-Thakurta and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an invitation to interrogate the secular modality of art, the book unsettles both the categories of 'art' and 'secular' in their theoretical and historical implications. It questions the temporal, spatial and cultural binaries between the 'sacred' and the 'secular' that have shaped art historical scholarship as well as artistic practice. All the essays here are anchored in a conception of a region, whether we call it South Asia or the Indian subcontinent – one, fissured by histories of partition, state formations and religious nationalisms, but still offering a collective site from which to speak to the disciplines of art and the knowledge worlds in which they are embedded. The book asks: How do we complicate the religious designations of pre-modern art and architecture and the new forms of their resurgence in contemporary iconographies and monuments? How do we re-conceptualize the public and the political, as fiery contestations and new curatorial practices reconfigure the meaning of art in the proliferating spaces of museums, galleries, biennales and festivals? How do we understand South Asian art's deep entanglements with the politics of the present?
