The editor has selected documents from these meetings that recreate not only the issues of concern to the two nations, but the atmosphere in which the meetings took place.
Download or read book Movie Roadshows written by Kim R. Holston and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines a film distribution system paralleling the rise of early features and persisting until 1972, when Man of La Mancha was the final roadshow to require reserved seating. Synonymous with Hollywood's star-studded premieres, roadshows were longer and cost more than regular features, making the experience similar to attending the legitimate theater. Roadshows, often epic in subject matter, played selected (usually only one) theaters in major urban centers until demand decreased. De rigueur by the 1960s were musical overtures, intermissions, entre'acte and exit music and souvenir programs for sale in the lobby. Throughout the text are recollections by people who attended roadshows, including actor John Kerr and actresses Barbara Eden and Ingrid Pitt. The focus is on roadshows released in the United States but an appendix identifies international roadshows and films forecast but not released as roadshows. Included are plots, contemporary critical reaction, premiere dates, production background, and methods of promotion--i.e., the ballyhoo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Crusade to Hazard: The Denazification of Bremen Germany explains how American and British combat forces and military government officers occupied, administered, and denazified Bremen and its environs from 1945 to 1947. Legislation was determined first by the Americans, then by the British, and then again by the Americans, and the three distinct phases of this process profoundly affected the city. Throughout, denazification teams tried to find a middle ground between the American dictum to radically purge the whole population and the less ambitious British goal to jettison only the administration.

Download or read book Imagining the Perfect Society in Muslim Brotherhood Journals written by Kiki M. Santing and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood during the presidencies of Anwar Sadat and the early years of Hosni Mubarak is based on the movement’s main journals, al-Da‘wa and Liwā’ al-’Islām, presenting its history during two relevant periods: 1976-1981, 1987-1988. These journals show that, contrary to the focus in modern research (e.a. sharia laws, gender relations, or ideas of democracy), the Brotherhood is a much more broadly oriented, social-political opposition movement, taking Islam as its guideline. The movement’s own versatile discourse discusses all aspects of daily and spiritual life. An important adage of the Brotherhood is Islam as a niẓām kāmil wa-shāmil, ‘a perfect and all-encompassing system’. Faith should play a role in every aspect of daily life, from cooking dinner and housekeeping to education, holidays, enemy images, legislation, and watching television. Islam is everything, and everything is Islam. In its journals the Brotherhood provided its unique reflection of the spirit of the age. The movement presented itself as a highly reactive group that responded to current events and positioned itself as a moral, religious and political opposition to the Egyptian regime.
