The significance of this play is that Madam Walker lives and breathes again in live theatre performance. Walker is the main character and tells her own story. Chapter one serves as a summary of my graduate work and states the main societal and personal elements that affected Walker's life to become the first self-made millionaire in America. She overcame the odds of sharecropping and was the first of her family born free of slavery. While living in Vicksburg, Mississippi, she did laundry in washtubs for rich whites and developed her products. Walker traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to start her company. Walker built a factory and office space in 1910 which took up a block of downtown Indianapolis. She manufatured and marketed hair and scalp treatments for black women's hair needs. Many black women of the nineteenth century suffered from lack of money, education, helth care, housing, birth control, and hair. Great emotions are attached to the styling of hair. Appearance is essential when seeking employment or acceptance. She made her system of hair care a part of the curriculum of many black colleges and gave black women a gathering place. Walker's system stressed financial independence for black women and girls. An avid supporter of her race, she donated money to black churches, colleges, youth organizations and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's anti-lynching fund. She employed black workers. Walker hired tutors and became an avid reader. At her peak, she employed 1,600 agents and her company's income was $1,000 a week. She traveled extensively within and outside of the United States. Her daughter, A'Lelia, helped her run the company. Both were avid supporters of the arts of the Harlem Renaissance. Walker ended her days in her Villa Lewaro Estate at Irvington-on-the=Hudson. Villa Lewaro and the Madam Walker Culture Center are now historic landmarks. The problem encountered in the research included not being able to visit the culture center for original research.
