Founder of The Theosophical Society, she has developed a polarising reputation; her supporters see her as a visionary and a spiritual genius, her detractors as a charlatan and a fraud. Blavatsky and published by . This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strange tales from a Russian Occultist The late nineteenth century saw a rise in the number of people who became interested in the occult and among them were a few who became notable practitioners. Aleister Crowley, for example, became infamous as a member of 'the Golden Dawn' and founder of the religion 'Thelema', and the author of this book, Russian born, Madam Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, became a proponent of Theosophy-a religion of archaic wisdom. Her most famous written work on the subject is 'The Secret Doctrine'. Fortunately, for enthusiasts of the other worldly and supernatural fiction, Blavatsky utilised her more earnest pursuits to provide inspiration and background for some highly entertaining tales of ghosts, horrors and weird occurrences. Her single small volume of supernatural fiction, 'Nightmare Tales', was published in 1892, but there remained a small number of uncollected stories published in magazines of the day. This Leonaur original collects all of these short stories as well as a chapter from her book, 'From the Caves and Jungles of Hindostan', which has in the past been included in anthologies of supernatural tales, to create the most complete collection of Madam Blavatsky's fiction ever published. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book excerpt: Elena Petrovna Gan (1831-1891), better known as Helena Blavatsky or Madame Blavatsky, born Helena von Hahn, was a founder of Theosophy and the Theosophical Society in 1875. She grew up amid a culture rich in spirituality and traditional Russian mythologies, which introduced her to the realm of the supernatural. She spent the years 1848 to 1858 travelling the world, and is said to have visited Egypt, France, Canada (Quebec), England, South America, Germany, Mexico, India, Greece and especially Tibet to study for two years with the men she called Brothers. She claimed to have become Buddhist while in Sri Lanka and to have been initiated in Tibet. She returned to Russia in 1858. Another unfounded account is that while in Cairo she formed the Societe Spirite for occult phenomena with Emma Cutting. It was in 1873 that she emigrated to New York City, impressing people with her psychic abilities, she was spurred on to continue her mediumship. Throughout her career she claimed to have demonstrated physical and mental psychic feats.

B. describes as her method of writing Isis Unveiled "When I think and watch my thoughts, they appear to me as though they were like those little bits of wood of various shapes and colours in the game known as casse tete I pick them up one by one, and try to make them fit each other, first taking one, then putting it aside until I find its match, and finally there comes out in the end something geometrically correct." Excerpt: ... and that honesty of purpose and unselfish activity are necessary for true human progress and the attainment of real happiness.--Your obedient Servant, St G. Lane Fox, F.T.S. London, October 5. A good deal of anxiety was nevertheless felt among some persons who had been greatly interested in the reports of Mme. Blavatsky's occult achievements in India, as to how far the letters might be genuine, and, finally, the Society for Psychical Research decided to send out to Madras one of their own members willing to undertake the investigation on the spot of all the transactions to which the letters referred. Mr Richard Hodgson, the gentleman in question, went out to India in November 1884, and stayed there till the following April. On his return he gave his Society a report that was altogether unfavourable to Mme. Blavatsky, and the committee of the Society appointed to enquire into the character of the phenomena " connected with the Theosophical Society" reported in their turn to a meeting of the Society held on the 24th of June, that the letters were genuine in the opinion of experts and that they sufficed to prove that Mme. Blavatsky " has been engaged in a long continued combination with other persons to produce by ordinary means a series of apparent marvels for the support of the Theosophical movement." Meanwhile Mme. Blavatsky had returned to India. On the arrival at Madras of the steamer in See Appendix. which she came a delegation of native students of the Madras colleges went on board to welcome her. The meaning of the demonstration turned upon the fact that the current charges against her had originated in the letters alleged to be written by her, and published in a magazine professedly identified with one of the colleges.
