Book Assessment of Changes in Channel Morphology and Bed Elevation in Mad River California 1971 2000

Download or read book Assessment of Changes in Channel Morphology and Bed Elevation in Mad River California 1971 2000 written by Kevin Knuuti and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers currently regulates gravel-mining activities in Humboldt County, CA, under the authority described in Sec. 404 of the Clean Water Act. In order to better understand the effects gravel mining has had on the Mad River, the U.S. Army Engineer District, San Francisco, initiated this study to examine changes in channel morphology and bed elevation between 1971 and 2000. This study focused on existing cross section data and historic aerial photography from a variety of sources, and river sediment (bed-load and bed-material) data collected by the USGS. It also used new cross-section data collected in 2000 and gravel extraction records. This information was used to quantify geomorphic changes in the river, to establish a sediment budget, and to determine a sustainable yield for gravel extraction based on maintaining the river in an equilibrium condition.

Book Streamflow Sediment and Turbidity in the Mad River Basin Humboldt and Trinity Counties California

Download or read book Streamflow Sediment and Turbidity in the Mad River Basin Humboldt and Trinity Counties California written by William M Brown (III.) and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mad River discharged an average suspended-sediment load of 2,710,000 tons per year during a 13-year period beginning October 1957. Preliminary analysis of data collected during the 1971 water year indicated that about 66% of the suspended sediment was derived from sources upstream from a proposed reservoir site on the Mad River near Butler Valley. The high rate of suspended-sediment discharge and the corresponding sediment-induced turbidity of the streamflow constitute potential problems in the operation of the proposed reservoir.

Book Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling

Download or read book Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling written by Alena Mudroch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-02-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little attention has been paid to the techniques for aquatic sediment sampling in the scientific literature dealing with environmental issues. With increasing interest in aquatic sediments as a sink source of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, it has been recognized that sediment sampling is a complex and poorly documented discipline. No standardized methods exist to preserve the integrity of sediment and, particularly, sediment pore water, during sampling for different analyses and biological testing for assessment of sediment quality. A practical guide presenting the various methods available would prove extremely valuable. This is that guide. The book begins with a description of the objectives of sediment sampling for different purposes and planning of sampling programs. Most commonly used and readily available samplers and sampling techniques are explained for routine monitoring of sediment contamination and studies of sediment quality. Sample handling, transport, and storage are outlined relevant to the subsequent use of the collected sediments in physico-chemical analysis and biological testing. Measurements and notes of observations in the field during collection of sediments are described. Methods and equipment for collection of sediment pore water are detailed, and the efficiency, cost, and safety involved in sediment sampling are considered. The Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling contains examples, figures, and tables to enhance the reader's understanding of the material and of the importance of choosing proper techniques in sediment sampling programs. For each topic, recent citations are included from specialized literature. The Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling contains many examples, figures, and tables which will help the reader to understand the importance of choosing proper techniques in sediment sampling programs, and will provide a guide to preparation and execution of such programs.

Book Sediment Transport Turbidity Channel Configuration and Possible Effects of Impoundment of the Mad River Humboldt County California

Download or read book Sediment Transport Turbidity Channel Configuration and Possible Effects of Impoundment of the Mad River Humboldt County California written by William M Brown (III.) and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment-transport conditions were determined at two stations, Mad River near Arcata and Mad River near Kneeland. Using a release-flow model and an empirical equation, the suspended-sediment discharge at Kneeland was estimated to be about 60 percent of the suspended-sediment discharge at the Arcata station. The study of the proposed impoundment determined the effect of discharge on channel configuration and concluded: The reservoir would trap about 60 percent of the potential beach-forming sediments. Release flows could transport the expected inflow of sediment particles less than 2 millimetres in diameter for the reach of the river downstream from the impoundment site and about 130,000 tons per year of bed material particles less than 3 inches (76 millimetres) in diameter. Release flows could be expected to degrade the channel for about 15 miles (24 kilometres) downstream from the impoundment, and downstream from that reach artificial adjustments would override most release-flow effects on channel adjustments. Turbidity of release flows could approximate preimpoundment turbidity for an average year.
