Book Mad Dogs Englishmen and the Errant Anthropologist

Download or read book Mad Dogs Englishmen and the Errant Anthropologist written by Douglas Raybeck and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 1996-07-08 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Raybeck, the solitary dictum that best characterizes fieldwork is Things go awry. In this spirited account of his time spent in Southeast Asia, Raybeck describes several adventures and misadventures involving field research, as well as the understanding, humility and bruises that these experiences leave behind. Since fieldwork is situated, Raybecks treatment also includes rich descriptions of Kelantanese society and culture, addressing such topics as kinship, linguistics, gender relations, economics, and political structures. Through the lively pages of this narrative, readers gain insight into the human dimension of the fieldwork undertaking, a sense of how the anthropologist builds rapport in a research setting, and how reliable information is obtained.

Download or read book Mad Dogs and Meerkats written by Karen Brown and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the ages, rabies has exemplified the danger of diseases that transfer from wild animals to humans and their domestic stock. In South Africa, rabies has been on the rise since the latter part of the twentieth century despite the availability of postexposure vaccines and regular inoculation campaigns for dogs. In Mad Dogs and Meerkats: A History of Resurgent Rabies in Southern Africa, Karen Brown links the increase of rabies to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Her study shows that the most afflicted regions of South Africa have seen a dangerous rise in feral dog populations as people lack the education, means, or will to care for their pets or take them to inoculation centers. Most victims are poor black children. Ineffective disease control, which in part depends on management policies in neighboring states and the diminished medical and veterinary infrastructures in Zimbabwe, has exacerbated the problem. This highly readable book is the first study of rabies in Africa, tracing its history in South Africa and neighboring states from 1800 to the present and showing how environmental and economic changes brought about by European colonialism and global trade have had long-term effects. Mad Dogs and Meerkats is recommended for public health policy makers and anyone interested in human-animal relations and how societies and governments have reacted to one of the world’s most feared diseases.

When he's approached by an old friend about becoming a silent partner in a Manhattan steakhouse, he's understandably wary. So he consults with his lifelong blood brother, Danny Burns. Danny's convinced this "vanity project" is the perfect trophy to illustrate how far they've travelled. Certain he's buried his checkered past, Roddy joins in this venture with serious reservations. Danny is quickly sucked into the high-energy glitz of the restaurant, but Roddy is suspicious. Amidst the glitter of New York's nightlife, amongst Mafia honchos and Russian thugs, events spin out of control and the lives Roddy and Danny knew are over. Hidden shady dealings drag them and their families into life-threatening terrain. Struggling with a monster he thought he'd buried, Roddy must make momentous choices, and none are good. But he has a daring plan . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its peak the British Empire covered approximately one quarter of the Earth's total land area and ruled over the same proportion of the world's population: its boundaries stretched from Birmingham to Bombay, from Cairo to Cape Town, and from Winnipeg to Wagga-Wagga. In this unique book, Ashley Jackson takes the reader on a richly informative tour of the empire 'on which the sun never set', examining the representations of empire that informed the world view of hundreds of millions of people. In a sequence of elegantly written chapters Mad Dogs and Englishmen examines every aspect of the largest imperium the world has seen, from its district commissioners to dependent territories, from its armed forces to its architecture, and from its music to its monarchy. Ashley Jackson's text is as accessible as it is scholarly, and is amplified and embellished by imperial imagery from an exceptionally wide range of media. Authoritative, sumptuous, and written by a scholar who is steeped in knowledge of the period, Mad Dogs and Englishmen evokes the fascinating sights and sounds that the British Empire presented to its citizens, and thereby brings a unique period of British and world history unforgettably to life.
