Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, ophthalmic pathology deals more and more with pathogenesis using highly sophisticated techniques. In recent decades, it has ex panded to such an extent that it now fills several volumes of a modern comprehensive atlas or textbook. Black and white prints of the macroscopic appearance of dissected eyes are standard in modern textbooks. Color photographs, although providing more visual infor mation and a better insight into the sometimes complex disease pro cesses of the eye, are however costly. Nevertheless, many ophthalmo logic colleagues expressed their desire to have me prepare such an atlas. It is not intended to replace one of the textbooks in this field but rather to supplement existing texts and to stimulate clinical and diagnostic thinking. Hence it should be used in conjunction with textbooks on anatomy and ocular pathology. The reader will find references on the different subjects in the excellent modern textbooks listed below. Diagnosis and treatment in ophthalmology is to a great extent based on morphologic examination. Clinical ophthalmologists have available such excellent tools as the slit-lamp, the gonioscope, and the ophthalmoscope to study and document ocular disease in vivo under high magnification. Both external eye structures and transpar ent ocular structures can be observed better in vivo than in the pathol ogy laboratory. Therefore the pathology of these is only presented in conditions in which direct visualization is normally difficult.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ophthalmic Pathology: A Concise Guide provides an introductory book of essential and fundamental information that will give the reader a solid foundation in ophthalmic pathology. The volume differs from the available classic and comprehensive ophthalmic pathology textbooks in its basic and simplified ‘one month approach’ concept. The text is rich in macroscopic and microscopic pathology images, clinical images, and bullet-point lists. Each chapter (Overview; Cornea; Conjunctiva; Eyelids; Uveal Tract; Retina; Orbit; and, Optic Nerve) includes approximately 30 color figures of common eye pathology diagnoses and also reviews the normal histology of each ocular component. An assortment of commentary related to common diagnoses and differential diagnostic considerations, clinical and pathological correlations, pearls and pitfalls, and ophthalmic pathology terminology can be found in each chapter. Other topics include: the fundamental pathology of glaucoma, trauma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and the phacomatoses; commonly used histochemical stains employed in ophthalmic pathology; and basic prosection of enucleation and evisceration specimens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is indeed a pleasure to write a foreword for this spectacular book which represents a landmark in the history of ocular pathology. Not since the three volumes of the Henke-Lubarsch handbook appeared forty years ago has anything like this come on the market. This book represents a compre hensive, thorough and up-to-date clinically oriented textbook on ocular pathology. We are all indebted to the senior author, who is now professor of ophthal mology at the University of Erlangen, who presents us here with the fruit of decades of industrious endeavors. We also have to be grateful to the American ophthalmic pathologist, Dr. David Apple, who, as one of the main collaborators of the German edition, has now provided us with the English translation. The book has a twofold purpose: First, it is meant to be a source of instruction for ophthalmologists and pathologists. For that purpose it is beautifully illustrated both by clinical pictures and by excellent photomicro graphs and electromicroscopic pictures. Most valuable from a didactic point of view are the colored schematic drawings and the many tables. These two features are practically unique and should help any neophyte in grasp ing the principles of ocular pathology.

Book Fetal and Neonatal Eye Pathology

Download or read book Fetal and Neonatal Eye Pathology written by Robert M. Verdijk and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book discusses the fetal eye, offering a brief introduction to the topic and discussing its development and treatment. The high-quality reference images allow the morphological fetal age to be determined, and the authors provide examples of artifacts and real-world findings to simplify histopathological diagnosis. The book also discusses findings in fetal eyes, presenting typical examples of common malformations, including clinical and histological pictures as well as additional findings from other specialties (such as neuropathology, genetics). In addition, it covers non-specific ocular malformations. It particularly addresses documentation and interpretation of cases of suspected Shaken-Baby Syndrome, which is of forensic importance. In the context of retinopathy of prematurity, histopathological and clinical findings are correlated. The book provides reference images of fetal development and guidelines on grossing and handling fetal eyes, and also explores the complicated topic of artifacts, including case illustrations with comprehensive information concerning other specialties. Lastly it discusses clinically and forensically relevant findings in newborns. It guides ophthalmic and pediatric pathologists in the interpretation of ocular findings, helping to narrow down differential diagnoses in fetal pathology, while at the same time serving as a valuable tool for specialists who do not have a great deal of experience in the examination of fetal eyes.

Download or read book Ophthalmic Histopathology written by W.R. Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written to give guidance to histopathologists who are dealing with pathological specimens submitted by ophthalmologists, whether in a general pathology laboratory or in a specialist ophthalmic pathology laboratory. The bias has been given to the diseases encountered commonly in the routine service or in the autopsy room and the intention is to show how to achieve the maximum information from each specimen. Conventional textbooks deal with diseases of the eye on an anatomical basis, but this is inappropriate for a histopathologist who is studying a globe in which the disease has varying effects on each of the individual tissue components. While unconventional, it seemed more acceptable to lay the book out under the relatively limited and broad headings which ophthalmologists use as indications for enucleation: "trauma", "tumour", "endophthalmitis", "vascular disease", etc. It also seemed logical to include a separate chapter on ocular disease as it is encountered in the autopsy room and, continuing the theme, to consider a keratoplasty specimen and the topics of orbital biopsy and conjunctival biopsy in separate chapters. In each pathological process, whenever appropriate, it was important to include the effects of modern therapeutic measures because this is one of the main features of interest for the clinician. For the beginner, an introductory chapter on the techniques and rationale of the preliminary systematic macroscopic examination of a globe has been included with an account of the supplementary techniques which are essential for an accurate diagnosis.
