Book International Health Statecraft

Download or read book International Health Statecraft written by Ulysses B. Panisset and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2000 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In International Health Statecraft, Ulysses B. Panisset addresses the question of whether international health phenomena, such as the 1991 cholera epidemic in Peru, influence the international relations of the affected country. The speed and volume at which people, commodities and microorganisms are currently crossing borders has increased significantly over the past decades, and as a result has changed the scope of international health. Panisset proposes a novel analytic model to help develop global cooperation and far-reaching policies that anticipate and respond to pandemics, regional environmental toxicology disasters, and other health phenomena. Organized into five cohesive chapters, International Health Statecraft will be of interest to foreign policy and public health decision-makers, analysts, students, and scholars.

Book Theories of International Relations

Download or read book Theories of International Relations written by M. Sullivan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-05-10 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a synthetic historiography of present-day international relations theory, a critical analysis of the continuing diversity and complexity of enduring themes through a sustained focus on the analysis of the empirical evidence accumulated by social scientists. Special attention is given to key historical changes in theoretical approaches over the past half-century with full recognition of the contestation over state-based theory, and the changing fortunes of contemporary approaches. The book suggests that viable theories must transcend current intellectual fashion, and attempts to bring together theory and practice while demonstrating the difficulty of assessing competing theories. It addresses multiple strands of thought and assumes that their development cannot be understood in isolation from each other.

Book Theory of International Politics

Download or read book Theory of International Politics written by Kenneth N. Waltz and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2010-01-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Theory of International Politics . . . National politics is the realm of authority, of administration, and of law. International politics is the realm of power, of struggle, and of accommodation. . . . States, like people, are insecure in proportion to the extent of their freedom. If freedom is wanted, insecurity must be accepted. Organizations that establish relations of authority and control may increase security as they decrease freedom. If might does not make right, whether among people or states, then some institution or agency has intervened to lift them out of natures realm. The more influential the agency, the stronger the desire to control it becomes. In contrast, units in an anarchic order act for their own sakes and not for the sake of preserving an organization and furthering their fortunes within it. Force is used for ones own interest. In the absence of organization, people or states are free to leave one another alone. Even when they do not do so, they are better able, in the absence of the politics of the organization, to concentrate on the politics of the problem and to aim for a minimum agreement that will permit their separate existence rather than a maximum agreement for the sake of maintaining unity. If might decides, then bloody struggles over right can more easily be avoided.

Book The Pattern of Imperialism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tony Smith
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1981-10-30
  • ISBN : 9780521236195
  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book The Pattern of Imperialism written by Tony Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-10-30 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal ambition of this book is to provide an avowedly eclectic, although largely political, explanation of American and British imperialism, as comprehensive and ultimately as unified as that offered by Marxist interpretations. Geopolitical considerations are assumed to be basic (but not exclusive) concerns of foreign policy elites in Britain and the United States; and the ability of people in Latin America, Africa and Asia to coordinate their activities, that is, to act politically, is assumed to be the central (but not sole) feature determining the character of their response to Western imperialism. The book provides profiles of various southern political regimes and categorises their different reactions to the impact of imperialism in the nineteenth century and to the impetus for decolonisation after 1945. The author concludes by considering the dilemma of American policy toward the Third World in the early 1980s, when traditional modes of conduct can no longer prescribe a clear plan of action.

Book The Realism Reader

Download or read book The Realism Reader written by Colin Elman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Realism Reader provides broad coverage of a centrally important tradition in the study of foreign policy and international politics. After some years in the doldrums, political realism is again in contention as a leading tradition in the international relations sub-field. Divided into three main sections, the book covers seven different and distinctive approaches within the realist tradition: classical realism, balance of power theory, neorealism, defensive structural realism, offensive structural realism, rise and fall realism, and neoclassical realism. The middle section of the volume covers realism’s engagement with critiques levelled by liberalism, institutionalism, and constructivism and the English School. The final section of the book provides materials on realism’s engagement with some contemporary issues in international politics, with collections on United States (U.S.) hegemony, European cooperation, and whether future threats will arise from non-state actors or the rise of competing great powers. The book offers a logically coherent and manageable framework for organizing the realist canon, and provides exemplary literature in each of the traditions and dialogues which are included in the volume. Offering substantial commentary and analysis and including enhanced pedagogy to facilitate student learning, The Realism Reader will provide a 'one-stop-shop' for undergraduates and masters students taking a course in contemporary international relations theory, with a particular focus on realism.
