Book Macro Engineering

Download or read book Macro Engineering written by V. Badescu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macro-engineering involves the large-scale modification and manipulation of natural systems for the benefit of mankind. The primary goals of some Earth-based macroprojects described in this book are power production, land reclamation, food production, climate change, water, transport and coastal protection. Other Earth or space projects considered here have a more futuristic ring, but our present-day technical skill makes their realization possible.

Book Macro Engineering and the Earth

Download or read book Macro Engineering and the Earth written by U W Kitzinger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work delivers ideas, comments and projects on energy, communications, transport, management, human resources, and financial and legal issues which macroengineering can contribute towards the solution of the Earth's environmental problems. Some 20 engineers and scholars identify problems in the next century whose solutions call for international policy planning and a more collaborative, peaceful and prosperous world order. Imaginative concepts employ forward thinking for applying technology in revolutionary projects. The book presents results of research on a triple helical turbine capable of extracting vast amounts of energy from slow-moving water, an invention which could harness rivers and ocean currents, rendering high dams (with their political, social and ecological implications) redundant. These turbines are already in mass production in the USA for use in the Gulf Stream to produce energy and hydrogen fuel, and can also be used to harness power from the wind. Another project, for which the technology is already available, will harvest solar energy by satellites stationed beyond our atmosphere and beam it to the Earth; and yet another calls for planetary defence of Earth against asteroid collisions. The environmental section discusses large projects for changing our climate, planning and costing for a sub-Mediterranean aqueduct connecting the River Rhone in France with Algeria, and plans for intensive fish farming of the oceans. The role of satellites includes telemedicine, and there are Swiss plans for further tunnelling through the Alps. Project management sections include the formation of a military-civilian conservation corps, financial and legal issues, macro-projects in China, and a forecast of 21st century macro-problems. Delivers ideas, comments and projects on energy, communications, transport, management, human resources, and financial and legal issues which macroengineering can contribute to the solution of the Earth’s environmental problems Identifies problems in the next century whose solutions call for international policy planning and a more collaborative, peaceful and prosperous world order Presents research on a triple helical turbine capable of extracting vast amounts of energy from slow-moving water

Book Macro Social Marketing Insights

Download or read book Macro Social Marketing Insights written by Ann-Marie Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macro-social marketing is an approach to solving wicked problems. Wicked problems include obesity, environmental degradation, smoking cessation, fast fashion, gambling, and drug and alcohol abuse. As such, wicked problems are those problems that are so complex and multifaceted, it is difficult to define the exact problem, its contributing factors, and paths to a solution. Increasingly, governments, NGOs, and community groups are seeking to solve these types of problems. In doing so, the issues with pursuing macro-level change are beginning to emerge. Issues stem from the interconnected nature of stakeholders involved with a wicked problem—where one change may create a negative ripple effect of both intended and unintended consequences. Macro-social marketing, then, provides a holistic and systemic approach to both studying and solving wicked problems. Within the chapters of this book, macro-social marketing approaches to analysing and defining wicked problems, to identifying stakeholders and potential ripple effects, and to implementing macro-level change are presented. In this emerging area of academia, the theories, models, and approaches outlined in this book are cutting edge and provide a critical approach from top researchers in the area. Both practical and theoretical aspects are presented as well as caveats on such societal and/or country-wide change. A must-have for social marketing academics and those interested in macro-level change at a practical or theoretical level.

Book Macro to Microscale Heat Transfer

Download or read book Macro to Microscale Heat Transfer written by D. Y. Tzou and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical processes taking place in micro/nanoscale strongly depend on the material types and can be very complicated. Known approaches include kinetic theory and quantum mechanics, non-equilibrium and irreversible thermodynamics, molecular dynamics, and/or fractal theory and fraction model. Due to innately different physical bases employed, different approaches may involve different physical properties in describing micro/nanoscale heat transport. In addition, the parameters involved in different approaches, may not be mutually inclusive. Macro- to Microscale Heat Transfer: The Lagging Behavior, Second Edition continues the well-received concept of thermal lagging through the revolutionary approach that focuses on the finite times required to complete the various physical processes in micro/nanoscale. Different physical processes in heat/mass transport imply different delay times, which are common regardless of the material type. The delay times, termed phase lags, are characteristics of materials. Therefore the dual-phase-lag model developed is able to describe eleven heat transfer models from macro to nanoscale in the same framework of thermal lagging. Recent extensions included are the lagging behavior in mass transport, as well as the nonlocal behavior in space, bearing the same merit of thermal lagging in time, in shrinking the ultrafast response down to the nanoscale. Key features: Takes a unified approach describing heat and mass transport from macro, micro to nanoscale Compares experimental results for model validation Includes easy to follow mathematical formulation Accompanied by a website hosting supporting material Macro- to Microscale Heat Transfer: The Lagging Behavior, Second Edition is a comprehensive reference for researchers and practitioners, and graduate students in mechanical, aerospace, biological and chemical engineering.
