Book Macon Terminal Station Its Predecessors and its Railroads

Download or read book Macon Terminal Station Its Predecessors and its Railroads written by David H. Steinberg on behalf of the Middle Georgia Regional Library and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macon is certainly not the largest railroad hub in the country--not even in Georgia. Yet in the early 1900s, with nearly 100 daily passenger trains, it had nothing about which to be ashamed. In those years, the nation's railroads dominated and, as was befitting, they flaunted their grandeur by building lavish passenger stations. In the South, virtually all of Macon's counterparts had been blessed with new eye-inviting stations. Macon, however, was still being served by what the local media described as a "ramshackle structure" (the 1855 Union Depot) and a "little dingy smoky structure" (the equally embarrassing Southern Railway depot). This all changed on December 1, 1916, when Macon Terminal Station's doors were thrown open to an eagerly awaiting populace. This book traces the events that began some 78 years before, in 1838, with the entry of Macon's first railroad line and led to the creation of Macon's downtown treasure.

Book Practicing Archaeology

Download or read book Practicing Archaeology written by Thomas W. Neumann and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive text and reference book addresses the questions and problems of cultural resources archaeology for undergraduate and graduate students and practicing archaeologists. Neumann, Sanford, and Neumann use their decades of field experience to discuss in great detail the complex processes involved in conducting a cultural resources management (CRM) project. Dealing with everything from law to logistics, archival research to artifact analysis, project proposals to report production, they provide an invaluable sourcebook for archaeologists who do contract archaeology. After introducing the legal and ethical aspects of CRM and stakeholder engagement, the authors describe the processes of designing a proposal and contracting for work, doing background research, conducting assessment, testing, mitigation work (Phase I, II, and III), laboratory analysis, and preparing reports for project sponsors. The volume’s emphasis on practical problems, use of extensive examples, and detailed advice on a host of subjects make it an ideal manual for archaeologists and field schools. This revised and expanded third edition of Practicing Archaeology: A Manual for Cultural Resources Archaeology updates Federal and state contracting protocols and covers preparing safety plans for occupational hazards, organization of an archaeology laboratory, use of electronic technology and digital media, advice on field and personnel management, and how to make a living doing cultural resources archaeology.

Book Railway Depots Stations Terminals

Download or read book Railway Depots Stations Terminals written by Brian Solomon and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the railway's beginnings, the station building, itself, had civic importance greater than ordinary structures. Let historian Brian Solomon show you how beautifully it filled that role. Railway Depots, Stations & Terminals is a unique book about some of the finest, most interesting, and most famous railway stations. Contemporary photographs, historic images, and postcard views provide an in-depth look at the architectural gems that dot the railroad landscape. The railway station has a special role in people's lives. Stations have served as the gateway to the world's great cities and the point of contact for remote towns. The inherent nature of the station is different from that of other buildings; it is an entrance, an exit, a place to rest, and a stop along the way. It can be the first thing a traveler sees and the last memory of a favorite city. Facing both the street and the tracks, the station is naturally a point of departure and a face of the city it serves. Brian Solomon, one of today's most accomplished railway historians, leads you through a one-of-a-kind exploration of the history and architecture of depots, stations, and terminals.

Book Chattanooga s Terminal Station

Download or read book Chattanooga s Terminal Station written by Justin W. Strickland and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before Glenn Miller made the world-famous "Chattanooga Choo Choo" an American icon, Chattanooga was already a bustling railroad community. By the beginning of the 20th century, passenger trains overwhelmed Chattanooga's two railroad depots and a larger station was needed. The solution was Terminal Station, which rivaled most Southern depots in size, expense, and aesthetic beauty. Providing transportation to cities throughout the country, the terminal made its mark as the gateway for rail from the agricultural south to the industrial north. Following its closure, the terminal was reopened as a renowned hotel and entertainment complex in 1973, becoming one of Chattanooga's many exciting attractions. Images of Rail: Chattanooga's Terminal Station follows the history of this depot in both stories and photographs.

Download or read book Atlanta Underground written by Jeffrey Morrison and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlanta Underground presents a city history through the lens of its buried and paved-over urban landscape. Atlanta has been built, rebuilt, destroyed and rebuilt so many times that it has created an artificial surface dozens of feet above the original ground plane, leaving room to explore the stories that lie below. Clues and paved-over evidence of the original streetscape are still accessible, but only to those who know where to look. The story begins with the railroads that brought people and business to Atlanta, and the intersections of transportation that Atlanta eventually outgrew. This tour of the city's history include the former sites of Union Station, Underground Atlanta and the Zero Milepost, and the unusual attempts to fill the void they left behind (a wax museum, musical instrument museum, a skating rink). Contemporary photos of this urban spelunking landscape will illustrate this telling of Atlanta’s history: how it came to be where it is, how it acquired its unique name, and how its colliding street grids were established. The rapid growth and change of Atlanta’s many lives has led to some downright interesting hidden locations and architectural curiosities, and AtlantaUnderground will reveal them one by one.

Book Central of Georgia Railway

Download or read book Central of Georgia Railway written by Jackson McQuigg and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004-04 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized in 1833 by Savannah businessmen, the Central of Georgia Railway was chartered by the Georgia Legislature as the Central Rail Road & Canal Company. The line, connecting Savannah to the interior of the state, boosted the coastal city's seaport, which had lost business to Charleston because of the South Carolina Rail Road's inland reach. In 1843, the Central was extended from Savannah to the outskirts of Macon, and after nearly 120 years of successful operation, the Central of Georgia Railway was purchased by Southern Railway. By 1982, it became merely an accounting entry in the books of Norfolk Southern, a major transportation company.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sallie Loy
  • Publisher : Arcadia Publishing
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9780738516417
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book The Southern Railway written by Sallie Loy and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern Railway was the pinnacle of rail service in the South for nearly 100 years. Its roots stretch back to 1827, when the South Carolina Canal & Rail Road Company was founded in Charleston to provide freight transportation and America's first regularly scheduled passenger service. Through the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Great Depression, rail lines throughout the South continued to merge, connecting Washington, D.C. to Atlanta and Charleston to Memphis. The Southern Railway was born in 1893 at the height of these mergers. It came to an end in 1982, merging with Norfolk and Western Railway to become Norfolk Southern Railway. The history of the railway lives on, however, and Norfolk Southern continues to "serve the South." In 2003, the Southern Railway Historical Association selected the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History as the repository for their extensive archives. Included in this collection are hundreds of professional quality, black-and-white photographs taken by company photographers throughout the railway's history. These photographs not only capture the transition from steam to diesel and the pinnacle of rail travel, but also the development of the South through much of the 20th century. While a few of these images have been seen by the public, the vast majority have not.

Book Portland Terminal Railroad Company

Download or read book Portland Terminal Railroad Company written by Alfred Mullett and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Big Bend area had its start with a land grant given by President Lincoln to the Northern Pacific Railway. As such, the railway company heavily promoted the area to encourage settlement and populate the station sites along the way. Towns began to develop in the late 1880s; prior to that time, the few settlers had a difficult time getting around. Despite snow, floods, fires, wrecks, human error, sabotage, and government regulation, the railroads continued and were able to serve the communities and help them survive. The earliest lines were built largely by man and beast with few large machines. The last transcontinental line in the Big Bend, the Milwaukee Road, featured groundbreaking technology in the form of electrically operated locomotives. The building of Grand Coulee Dam brought more railroad lines, with tracks that featured grades and locomotives normally seen on logging railroads, to bring in construction materials to the largest concrete structure in the world at the time.
