Book Mackinac the Wonderful Isle Petoskey Traverse City and Other Northern Michigan Summer Resorts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mackinac the Wonderful Isle Petoskey Traverse City and Other Northern Michigan Summer Resorts Classic Reprint written by Grand Rapids and Indiana Railro Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mackinac, the Wonderful Isle, Petoskey, Traverse City and Other Northern Michigan Summer Resorts Inac island, fanned by the breezes and laved by the waters of the three greatest lakes of America - Superior, Michigan and Huron has the most equable, exhilarating and delightful climate of any spot in the north temperate zone. The island, situated at the confluence of the great lakes med, is about nine miles in circumference. Containing a little less than three thousand acres. Of this area one hundred and three acres are used for a military reserva tion, somewhat more is private property, and the remain der the United States, with a proper appreciation of its many attractions, has reserved for a National Park. The Wonderful Island, surrounded by the blue-green waters which separate the two pen insulas composing the State of Michigan, has all the beauties and advan tages of an ideal summer resort. This has been known for centuries, for the aboriginal inhabitants of the Peninsular State, and indeed the entire West, regarded the island as the especial home of the Great Spirit. It was as near an approximation to heaven as the Indian had ever realized. So imagery and metaphor have been exhausted in the vain attempt to describe its glories. It has been named The Wonderful Isle, The Queen of Enchantment, The Tourists' Paradise, Gem of the Straits, The Fairy Isle - indeed, it has almost as many pet names as it has had visitors, and their number is legion. The island, at its highest point, rises some three hundred feet above the waters of the Straits of Mackinac, hence, to craft, passing through that Gateway of the West, it is one of the most conspicuous objects in the horizon for a long distance. Indeed, it may be properly termed Nature's Statue of Liberty, watching the wealth and products of the great North west as they pass on their way to the sea-coast, for our own people or for other nations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undefeated provides an engaging and thorough picture of how a family owned business developed, overcame challenges, and interacted with the rich context of the northern Michigan tourism industry. It is a very rare story of a three-generation family-owned and family-operated business that has had to fight for survival for nearly seventy years. Fierce competition from other ferry lines, treacherous weather conditions, costly maintenance on passenger and freight vessels, changing governmental regulations, and depressed economic conditions in the State of Michigan are but a few of the challenges the Sheplers have faced over the years. This book reveals how, operating in the historically rich Straits of Mackinac waters of Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry exploits the beautiful scenery, military forts, lighthouses, and the world famous Mackinac Bridge by conducting tours accompanied by expert narration sharing both fact and fiction about the native American culture of the region, the missionaries, fur trading, and ships lost to the rough waters of the Great Lakes. In this book the reader will also get some interesting insights into Mackinac Island and St. Ignace, with their very divergent cultures and offerings that can inspire and entertain visitors.

Book excerpt: First explored by Native Americans, French Canadians, and Jesuit missionary priests, this water passageway, once known as Michilimackinac, connects Lake Michigan and Lake Huron and separates Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Geographically, cartographers have charted the Straits of Mackinac on the west from Waugoshance Island in Lake Michigan eastward through the narrow submerged valley between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace and continuing east/southeast down the south channel of Lake Huron to the city of Cheboygan. As a popular tourist destination, this area welcomes travelers visiting Mackinac Island, as well as historical sites where St. Ignace, Mackinaw City, and Cheboygan now prosper.
