Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I SERVED was written differently from most other Vietnam memoirs. Instead of being a chronological recitation of my experiences growing up in the orphanage and then going to Vietnam and serving with Co. F, 51st Long Range Patrol (Airborne) Infantry, I made its focus be the characters in the story. That is its greatest strength and what makes it such a good read. Because I focused so closely on character, you really get to care about the person Don Hall because you know what makes him tick, what is important to him, and what drives him. You are also engaged by the other people you meet in the story because they are so clearly drawn. You don't have to be a military buff to enjoy the book. I SERVED is a factual story backed up by official U.S. Army records. Col. William C. Maus, the man who formed F/51st LRP, told me where to find that documentation. I also have copies of handouts we received when we went to Recondo School. Before he died, he told me how much he enjoyed reading the book. He praised me for having written such a great story about a unit he was proud to have commanded. He was a visionary who knew our unit was the vanguard for future U.S. Army military strategy and tactics. I remember his telling me at the time that F/51st LRP was making history. Being just a naïve 19-year-old staff sergeant, I didn't understand the significance of that statement. I do now. The current print and ebook versions of I SERVED are a second edition to the original 1994 hardbound edition, with a revised preface and afterword, a new War Stories section (with stories from other men with whom I served), and new photographs.

Book excerpt: Come up Voice is a story about a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War who after fifty years is still struggling with PTSD. It describes in vivid detail his journey from “new guy” innocence to a battle tested and hardened veteran. But his journey doesn’t end there. He has always been afraid to tell this story, fearing the inability to separate his nightmares from reality. His biggest fear however was what others would think and the possibility that his family would view him as psychologically impaired. But after years of encouragement from his counselors, he decided to write it all down. Wanting so desperately to finally heal and not wake each morning weary over distinguishing between nightmares and reality. This book is an attempt to reveal what PTSD looks like. It discloses how the gruesomeness of war and fifty years of nightmares can affect a person for a lifetime.

Book Forgotten Voices of Burma

Download or read book Forgotten Voices of Burma written by Julian Thompson and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-09-30 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the end of 1941 to 1945 a pivotal but often overlooked conflict was being fought in the South-East Asian Theatre of World War 2 - the Burma Campaign. In 1941 the Allies fought in a disastrous retreat across Burma against the Japanese - an enemy more prepared, better organised and more powerful than anyone had imagined. Yet in 1944, following key battles at Kohima and Imphal, and daring operations behind enemy lines by the Chindits, the Commonwealth army were back, retaking lost ground one bloody battle at a time. Fighting in dense jungle and open paddy field, this brutal campaign was the longest fought by the British Commonwealth in the Second World War. But the troops taking part were a forgotten army, and the story of their remarkable feats and their courage remains largely untold to this day. The Fourteenth Army in Burma became one of the largest and most diverse armies of the Second World War. British, West African, Ghurkha and Indian regiments fought alongside one another and became comrades. In Forgotten Voices of Burma - a remarkable new oral history taken from Imperial War Museum's Sound Archive - soldiers from both sides tell their stories of this epic conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1971, when a scandal shook Soviet Belarus and threatened to bring down the highest-level leaders of the state, a new phrase began to circulate among the Belarusian people: Soon everyone knew the definition of a Boroda Casea secret pool of money and goods, siphoned from Consumer Union warehouses and used by senior officials, who didnt hesitate to spend the embezzled money on extravagances at a time when the average citizen was forced to stand in line just to buy bread. But what of the Boroda Case namesake? When the scandal broke, Matvey Boroda, a Consumer Union Chairman, found himself at the center of a trial that dominated headlines, destroyed lives, and, ultimately, sent Boroda to jail for ten years. From a KGB prison cell, Boroda pleaded with secretaries of the Communist Party to reexamine his role in what would become known as Case 92: While higher ranking officials had escaped prosecution, Boroda had become a scapegoat, serving time for the crimes of his superiors. The so-called first Godfather of the USSR, or a great but humble man who only wanted to be successful in his workwho was Matvey Boroda? The answer lies not in the files of Case 92, nor in the government workers testimonies, nor in the stories created by the media. The answer lies in these pages, where myth and truth intersect to create a Voice From the Past.

Book Performance in an Age of Precarity

Download or read book Performance in an Age of Precarity written by Maddy Costa and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This magical book is a love letter to the artists whose imagination and cleverness transport us and unite us, and to the beauty and fragility of their performance. When I read it I feel like I am constantly on the joyful edge of falling in love, trying so hard to keep hold of the feelings evoked. A very precious book in our precarious times." Vicky Featherstone An anthology of critical essays that draw on a decade of the authors thinking, writing about and working within contemporary performance as critics, producers, dramaturgs, makers, archivists and more. Together, the 40 essays sketch a map of the contemporary performance landscape from avant-garde dance to live art to independent theatre, tracing the contours of its themes, aims, desires and relationship to the wider worlds of mainstream theatre, art and politics. Each essay focuses on a particular artist and these include Bryony Kimmings, Dickie Beau, Forced Entertainment, Scottee, Selina Thompson, Tania El Khoury and Uninvited Guests. Reflecting the radical nature of the work considered, the authors attempt to find a new vocabulary and a non-conventional way of considering live performance in these essays. As both a fresh survey of contemporary performance and an exploration of how to think and write about upstream and avant-garde work, this book should be an essential resource for students, artists and audiences, as well as an accessible entry point for anyone curious to know about the beautiful and strange things happening beyond the UK's theatrical mainstream.

Book My Brother s Voice

Download or read book My Brother s Voice written by Stephen Nasser and published by Stephens Press, LLC. This book was released on 2003 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen Nasser somehow dug deep within his soul to survive the brutal and inhumane treatement his captors inflicted on the Jews. He was the only one of his family to survive--but the memory of his brother's dying words compelled him to live. Stephen's account of the Holocaust, told in the refreshingly direct and optimistic language of a young boy, appeals to both younger audiences and his contemporaries. Written in a straightforward, narrative style, Nasser avoids the cloying or maudlin language that characterizes some stories of the Holocaust. Perhaps it's for that reason readers will find his book one they won't forget--and one they recommend to others as a "must read."

Constantly endangered by superior German machines, facing incessant ground fire during their bombing and strafing attacks, Dev and his fellow pilot Crisp drive home their attacks with unremitting determination.
