Book excerpt: "John H. McFadden and His Age: Cotton and Culture in Philadelphia is the first biography dedicated to John McFadden (1850-1921), Philadelphia's-if not the country's-grandest cotton king of his time and collector and donor of an important grouping of British paintings now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Tracing his life in both England and Philadelphia, this book not only examines how McFadden accumulated his wealth and art collection, but also illuminates his roles as a notable philanthropist, a rare-book collector, a real-estate developer, and a museum administrator, as well as the founder of possibly the world's first multimedia news café. Situating him within the context of Philadelphia's late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century major players, McFadden is revealed as the city's unofficial arts czar, overseeing-and often ruling- many of its foremost cultural institutions"--

Book The Rise and Fall of the Age of Psychopharmacology

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of the Age of Psychopharmacology written by Edward Shorter and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Age of Psychopharmacology began with a brilliant rise in the 1950s, when for the first time science entered the study of drugs that affect the brain and mind. But, esteemed historian Edward Shorter argues that there has been a recent fall, as the field has seen its drug offerings impoverished and its diagnoses distorted by the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders." The new drugs, such as Prozac, have been less effective than the old. The new diagnoses, such as "major depression," have strayed increasingly from the real disorders of most patients. Behind this disaster has been the invasion of the field by the pharmaceutical industry. This invasion has paid off commercially but not scientifically: There have been no new classes of psychiatry drugs in the last thirty years. Given that psychiatry's diagnoses and therapeutics have largely failed, the field has greatly declined from earlier days. Based on extensive research discovered in litigation, Shorter provides a historical perspective of change and decline over time, concluding that the story of the psychopharmacology is a story of a public health disaster.

This book was released on 2015-01-14 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confessional Crises and Cultural Politics in Twentieth-Century America revolutionizes how we think about confession and its ubiquitous place in American culture. It argues that the sheer act of labeling a text a confession has become one of the most powerful, and most overlooked, forms of intervening in American cultural politics. In the twentieth century alone, the genre of confession has profoundly shaped (and been shaped by) six of America’s most intractable cultural issues: sexuality, class, race, violence, religion, and democracy.
