Historically the land of Philip II and Alexander the Great, Aristotle, Mount Olympus and the Greek gods, Macedonia boasts an impressive cultural heritage that the Greeks have claimed as their own. In 1991, a state resulting from the breakup of Yugoslavia proclaimed itself Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), angering the Greeks and adding fuel to the persistent dispute. This book argues the Macedonian question from a Greek perspective. It questions FYROM's right to the Macedonian name, arguing that Greece possesses the historical, cultural, linguistic, anthropological and demographic ties to the legacy of Alexander. Research examines the origins of the dispute between Hellenism and Bulgarism, the Balkans wars, the world wars and the rise of Tito's communism in Yugoslavia. The book also shows, step by step, the misconceptions about the legacy of Macedonia as promulgated by international communism, and carefully analyzes communism's role as the main protagonist in the formation of the new state and as a pivotal source fomenting and fueling the Greek Civil War. Cover to cover, it traces the conflict's change from an initial struggle between Hellenism and Bulgarism to the present dispute between Athens and Skopje.

The essays in this collection cast a wider net, to show how Classical Greek, Hellenistic and Roman authors reinterpret and sometimes misinterpret information on ancient Macedonians to serve their own literary and political aims. Although Roman ideas pervade the historiographical tradition, this volume shows that the manipulation of ancient Macedonian history largely occurred much earlier. It reflected the complicated dynastic politics of the Argead royal house, the efforts of Alexander himself to redefine Macedonian kingship, and the competing strategies of the Successors to claim his legacy. Facing the complexity of the source tradition about the ancient Macedonians yields a richer and more balanced reflection of both the history and the historiography of this important and controversial people.

Some Greeks interpret diaspora as exile, others as a positive aspect of Hellenism's ethnic and spiritual destiny, who remained loyal to their faith, ethnicity and homeland. The beheading of Archimedes was the beginning of the brain drain of Greeks to the Middle East, Asia and Northern Africa. The existence of these diaspora communities was also an important factor in the spread of Christianity. By the early Middle Ages Europe was the centre of Hellenic scholarship, but from the time of the Crusaders, anti-orthodoxy and the persecution of Hellenes begun. Eastern Europe welcomed Greek victims of persecution and by the 17th century Eastern Europe had become the diaspora's centre, until the massacres of the 1821 and 1915 by the Ottomans, thus many Greeks migrated to Germany, Britain and the USA.
