Book Britain America and Arms Control 1921 37

Download or read book Britain America and Arms Control 1921 37 written by Christopher Hall and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987-03-16 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arms control diplomacy as a central factor in superpower relations is not a new phenomenon. In this book, Christopher Hall traces the rise and fall of a previous arms limitation effort, the naval treaties of the interwar years, which successfully controlled competition in the strategic weapons of that era - the battleships and other vessels of the British, American and other 'great power' navies. He shows the problems and their solutions - many of relevance today - which made the treaties possible, and their major role in the peaceful transfer of leadership of the west from the British Empire to the United States.

Book Britain and the Problem of International Disarmament

Download or read book Britain and the Problem of International Disarmament written by Carolyn J. Kitching and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-05-20 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Great War, multilateral disarmament was placed at the top of the international agenda by the Treaty of Versailles and the Covenant of the League of Nations. This book analyzes the naval, air and land disarmament policies of successive British governments from 1919 to 1934, articulating their dilemma either to fulfil their obligations or to avoid them. Daring and controversial, the present study challenges the hitherto accepted view that Britain occupied the high moral ground by drastically reducing its armaments and argues that, during this period, British disarmament policy was reactive and generally failed to provide the leadership that this extremely sensitive time in international politics demanded.

  • Author : Ross McKibbin
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2010-03-25
  • ISBN : 0191614998

Download or read book Parties and People written by Ross McKibbin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'sequel' to his best-selling Classes and Cultures, Ross McKibbin's latest book is a powerful reinterpretation of British politics in the first decades of universal suffrage. What did it mean to be a 'democratic society'? To what extent did voters make up their own minds on politics or allow elites to do it for them? Exploring the political culture of these extraordinary years, Parties and People shows that class became one of the principal determinants of political behaviour, although its influence was often surprisingly weak. McKibbin argues that the kind of democracy that emerged in Britain was far from inevitable-as much historical accident as design-and was in many ways highly flawed.

Book Politicians Diplomacy and War in Modern British History

Download or read book Politicians Diplomacy and War in Modern British History written by Keith Robbins and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1994-07-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aspirations of democracy and the requirements of diplomacy have always coexisted uneasily. The politicians discussed in this book, in particular the appreciation of the careers of John Bright and James Bryce, reflect obliquely or directly on the problems of politicians who seek the 'high moral ground' either in domestic or international politics. There is also a discussion of the relationship between politicians and the press, as well as of the difficult link between cultural and political assumptions on the one hand and the facts of economic performance on the other.

Book The British Labour Party and the Wider World

Download or read book The British Labour Party and the Wider World written by Paul Corthorn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacy of Blair and the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan continue to loom large for the Labour Party, whether in opposition or in government, giving rise to fierce debates over Labour's attitude and posture towards the wider world. This book considers the idea of Labour's international identity, examining how world events and Labour's response to them have helped to shape ideology, political culture and domestic agendas from the 1920s until the Iraq War. It provides a fascinating and original exploration of Labour both on the world stage and at home - from the influence of the Soviet Union on political thought in the interwar years to the international student revolts of the 1960s, and from media in the 1990s to Kosovo and New Labour Interventionism. This is essential reading for scholars of modern British politics, as well as anyone interested in the motivations and influences behind the Labour Party's actions on the world stage.

Book Beyond Appeasement

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cecelia Lynch
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780801435485
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Beyond Appeasement written by Cecelia Lynch and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interwar peace movements were, according to conventional interpretations, naive and ineffective. More seriously, the standard histories have also held that they severely weakened national efforts to resist Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia. Cecelia Lynch provides a long-overdue reevaluation of these movements. Throughout the work she challenges these interpretations, particularly regarding the postwar understanding of Realism, which forms the basis of core assumptions in international relations theory. The Realist account labels support for interwar peace movements as idealist. It holds that this support--largely pacifist in Britain, largely isolationist in the United States--led to overreliance on the League of Nations, appeasement, and eventually the onset of global war. Through a careful examination of both the social history of the peace movements and the diplomatic history of the interwar era, Lynch uncovers the serious contradictions as well as the systematic limitations of Realist understanding and outlines the making of the structure of the world community that would emerge from the war.Lynch focuses on the construction of the United Nations as evidence that the conventional history is incomplete as well as misleading. She brings to light the role of social movements in the formation of the normative underpinnings of the U.N., thus requiring scholars to rethink their understanding of the repercussions of the interwar experience as well as the significance of social movements for international life.
