Book excerpt: Excerpt from Macaulay's Life of Samuel Johnson IT has been my purpose to make this edition of Macaulay's Life of Samuel Johnson as interesting as possible to the class of pupils who will study it. The notes are unusually full of explanatory and illustra tive matter. It is useless to expect secondary school pupils to pursue independent investigations, and, even if the desire were present, the necessary books are generally lacking. The only book of reference one can count on is Webster's International Dictionary, and there are no notes on points where the definitions of that work are adequate. Book THE LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON All 6 Volumes in One Edition

Download or read book THE LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON All 6 Volumes in One Edition written by James Boswell and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-11-26 with total page 2952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D." (1791) is a biography of Dr. Samuel Johnson written by James Boswell. It is regarded as an important stage in the development of the modern genre of biography; many have claimed it as the greatest biography written in English. While Boswell's personal acquaintance with his subject only began in 1763, when Johnson was 54 years old, Boswell covered the entirety of Johnson's life by means of additional research. The biography takes many critical liberties with Johnson's life, as Boswell makes various changes to Johnson's quotations and even censors many comments. Regardless of these actions, modern biographers have found Boswell's biography as an important source of information. The work was popular among early audiences and with modern critics, but some of the modern critics believe that the work cannot be considered a proper biography. James Boswell (1740–1795) was a lawyer, diarist, and author born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is best known for the biography he wrote of one of his contemporaries, the English literary figure Samuel Johnson, which the modern Johnsonian critic Harold Bloom has claimed is the greatest biography written in the English language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Macaulay's Life of Johnson This edition, it is hoped, has two merits: it attempts to reach an intelligent mean between overediting and underediting, and it contains some convenient drudg ery-saving devices for student and teacher. It has been the desire of the editor so to guide the student's approach to Macaulay's essay that the secondary pur pose oi the essayist - namely, to interest - may be made to no great extent subordinate to the primary purpose, to give information. As the critic Gosse is later quoted: The most restive of juvenile minds, if induced to enter one of Macaulay's essays, is almost certain to appear at the end of it gratified and to an appreciable extent, cultivated. It is hoped that the introduction will quicken rather than deaden interest. As for the drudgery-saving aids in the ap pendix, it would surely be a work of supererogation to offer apologies for presenting devices easing and reduc ing endless school tasks.
