This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the second of the thirteen in preparation that will offer the first complete scholarly edition of the poetry and music of Guillaume de Machaut, the foremost practitioner of these related arts at the end of the Middle Ages in France. It provides a freshly prepared edition based on the most reliable manuscript of two of Machaut's best known dits, the Remede de Fortune (Remedy for Fortune) and the Confort d'ami (Consolation from a Friend), both of which adapt the central ideas of Boethian philosophy to the love poetry tradition. The French texts are accompanied by facing English translations, and the musical passages are presented in situ in a performance-accessible form.

Book La Prison Amoureuse

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean Froissart
  • Publisher : Psychology Press
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN : 9780815303299
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book La Prison Amoureuse written by Jean Froissart and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though best known for his "Chronicles," Froissart was also one of the great poets of the 14th century. The first and perhaps most important disciple of Machaut, he produced courtly narrative "dits," an enormous Arthurian romance ("M liador"), and numerous lyrics. La Prison Amoureuse is probably the most important of his narrative "dits." Inspired by Machaut's "Le Voir Dit," the Prison presents a literary correspondence between a poet and patron, whose names are hidden behind allegorical pseudonyms. The Prison cleverly intercalates the men's prose letters to each other, as well as their lyric compositions, into its narrative frame. Critics have read the work as everything from pure fancy and courtly fluff to a recreation of the letters exchanged between Froissart and his patron, Wenceslas of Luxemburg, during the latter's captivity of 1372. The very difficulty of interpretation makes the "Prison "of importance to scholars interested in the relationship between artists and patrons, and the place of literature in society, during the Hundred Years War. This new edition also provides the first English translation of a major work by a writer who almost certainly knew and influenced Chaucer.

Book First Letters in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries

Download or read book First Letters in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries written by Alain Kerhervé and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘First letters’ can be understood in various ways: as the first letters written by a person, such as the letters of children, or of drafts which were preserved, amended and copied; as the first letter of a particular type, such as an experienced letter-writer’s first love letter; and as the first letter to a new correspondent, among many others. The idea of a first letter also suggests a link with the letters that follow: what is the connection between the first letter and those which come after it? Written by academics specializing in letter-writing internationally, this volume examines the letters of various authors, philosophers, and artists, including Benjamin Constant, José-Maria de Heredia, Voltaire, Diderot, Coleridge, De Quincey, and others. It is structured in four sections: letters from youth; first letters in fictional works; the writer’s persona; and first letters within correspondence.

In yearly hardcover volumes, the new series publishes significant scholarship, criticism, and reviews treating all facets of medieval and Renaissance culture: history, art, literature, music, science, law, economics, and philosophy. Volume 40 showcases the interdisciplinary nature of the series with five articles on topics such as the image of Jews in Christian medieval literature, Trojan legends in Dante, and thirteenth-century French love poetry. Volume 40 also includes eight review notices that illustrate the volume’s interdisciplinary scope.
