Book Control Theoretic Splines

Download or read book Control Theoretic Splines written by Magnus Egerstedt and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Splines, both interpolatory and smoothing, have a long and rich history that has largely been application driven. This book unifies these constructions in a comprehensive and accessible way, drawing from the latest methods and applications to show how they arise naturally in the theory of linear control systems. Magnus Egerstedt and Clyde Martin are leading innovators in the use of control theoretic splines to bring together many diverse applications within a common framework. In this book, they begin with a series of problems ranging from path planning to statistics to approximation. Using the tools of optimization over vector spaces, Egerstedt and Martin demonstrate how all of these problems are part of the same general mathematical framework, and how they are all, to a certain degree, a consequence of the optimization problem of finding the shortest distance from a point to an affine subspace in a Hilbert space. They cover periodic splines, monotone splines, and splines with inequality constraints, and explain how any finite number of linear constraints can be added. This book reveals how the many natural connections between control theory, numerical analysis, and statistics can be used to generate powerful mathematical and analytical tools. This book is an excellent resource for students and professionals in control theory, robotics, engineering, computer graphics, econometrics, and any area that requires the construction of curves based on sets of raw data.

Book excerpt: Approach your problem from the right It isn't that they can't see end and begin with the answers. the solution. The Scandal The Hermit Clad in Crane Feathers in of Father Brown The Point of R. van Gulik's The Chinese Maze Murders. a Pin. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new brancheq. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics, algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisci fI plines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD , "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes.

Book Applied Nonparametric Econometrics

Download or read book Applied Nonparametric Econometrics written by Daniel J. Henderson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of empirical research in economics ignores the potential benefits of nonparametric methods, while the majority of advances in nonparametric theory ignores the problems faced in applied econometrics. This book helps bridge this gap between applied economists and theoretical nonparametric econometricians. It discusses in depth, and in terms that someone with only one year of graduate econometrics can understand, basic to advanced nonparametric methods. The analysis starts with density estimation and motivates the procedures through methods that should be familiar to the reader. It then moves on to kernel regression, estimation with discrete data, and advanced methods such as estimation with panel data and instrumental variables models. The book pays close attention to the issues that arise with programming, computing speed, and application. In each chapter, the methods discussed are applied to actual data, paying attention to presentation of results and potential pitfalls.

Book Wavelets and Their Applications

Download or read book Wavelets and Their Applications written by J.S. Byrnes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is probably true quite generally that in the history of human thinking the most fruitful developments frequently take place at those points where two different lines of thought meet. Hence, if they actually meet, that is, if they are at least so much related to each other that a real interaction can take place, then one may hope that new and interesting developments may follow. Werner Heisenberg This volume contains papers presented at the August 1992 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Wavelets and Their Applications. The conference was held at the beautiful Il Ciocco resort near Lucca, in the glorious Tuscany region of northern Italy. Once again we gathered at this idyllic spot to explore and extend the reciprocity between mathematics and engineering. The dynamic interaction between world-renowned scientists from the usu ally disparate communities of pure mathematicians and applied scientists, which occurred at our 1989 and 1991 ASI's, continued at this meeting. Wavelet theory and technology is in an important growth stage at which theoretical and practical results are being compared with existing methods. There have been spectacular wavelet successes and sobering comparisons with traditional ideas-but still there is a wide expanse of scientific problems to explore. Since these problems lie at the forefront of both pure mathematics and applied science, our NATO ASI was especially pertinent at this time.

Book Analysis of Structures by Matrix Methods

Download or read book Analysis of Structures by Matrix Methods written by Fathi Al-Shawi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-02-10 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of engineering structures has always been a challenge to engineers, and in the past, classical methods were used to quantify the response of a structure to the applied forces. These methods were suitable for the analysis of relatively simple structures that could be solved by hand calculations but complicated structures had to be simplified to a model that could be solved by classical methods. The results, however, were approximations depending on the modifications made to the structure as well as on the experience and judgement of the analyst. These limitations led to the derivation of the slope-deflection equations for continuous beams, and later, formulation of the moment distribution method. With the advent of electronic computers, systematic procedures for the analysis of structures have been developed. Computer programs help in obtaining required solutions to the simultaneous equations in the case of structures where the number of equations is large and hand calculations are not suitable. The detailed work with simultaneous equations can be made in a general and compact form by using matrix notation, leading to the development of the matrix methods of structural analysis. This book deals with the analysis of engineering structures made of skeletal members and covers the type of structures that are commonly used in practice. It builds up on the subject matter dealing with matrix algebra, analysis of bar elements, special forms of members, stability and vibration of structures, and pin-connected, rigid-plane, and 3D frames. It treats the important step of formulating the overall stiffness matrix of a structure in a systematic and straightforward manner and uses simple mathematical approaches wherever possible. The book is reader friendly, particularly for beginners who have no prior knowledge in this subject and can also be used as a textbook by undergraduate and postgraduate students studying for a degree in civil, structural, or mechanical engineering as well as by practicing engineers who have not studied this subject but are using software packages that deal with the analysis of engineering structures.
