Tullii Ciceronis Cato Maior, Sive De Senectute This edition does not require a long Preface. It is meant for the same purpose as Mr. Sidgwick's com panion edition, of the 'de Amicitia.' In drawing up the Notes, I have simply tried to give the kind and quantity of help which a master approves and a boy will understand. Beginners are easily discouraged and confused by a variety Of readings and a crowd Of references. Hence I have reduced matter of this kind to a minimum. The text is based mainly on that of Sommerbroodt and Reid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from M. Tulli Ciceronis Cato Maior De Senectute: Edited for Schools and Colleges The time was one of desperate gloom for Cicero. The wound caused by his daughter's death' was still unhealed, and his brief outburst of joy over Caesar's end had been quickly succeeded by disgust and alarm at the proceedings of Antonius. It is easy to catch some echoes in the Cato maior of Cicero's grief at that time. When it is said that of all Cato's titles to admiration none is higher than the fortitude he showed in bear ing the death of his son', the writer is thinking of the struggle he himself had been waging against a like sorrow for more than a year past; and when Cato expresses his firm conviction that he should meet his child beyond the grave, we can see Cicero's own yearning for reunion with his deeply loved Tullia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from M. Tulli Ciceronis Cato Maior De Senectute: Edited With Introduction and Notes The De Senectute is usually given a place in the early part of the college course, when training in the reading of the Latin is imperatively needed To assist the student in acquiring greater accuracy in pronunciation, the long vowels in the text have been marked. In this Lewis has been taken as a guide, and both his Latin Dictionary for Schools and his Elementary Latin Dictionary have been consulted. It is earnestly hoped that this feature may be welcomed by teachers, and may prove to be of practical value. It must be remembered, however, that absolute accuracy in mark ing quantities is out of the questiozn. The Introduction has been made somewhat full in order to present, in convenient form, a sketch of Cicero's life, with a brief account of what he has accomplished in literature, and more especially in philosophy. In the preparation of the sections which bear upon his standing as a philosopher and his relation to the leading schools, Mayor's admirable Sketch of Greek Philoso phy has been very helpful. Matters of text, language, and content are all considered equally in the commentary.

This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cicero De Senectute (Cato Major) A Dialogue on Old Age It belongs to the division of Ethics, which had for its subject-matter the nature of the summum bonum, and the conduct of life. Since the third century B.C. philosophy had lost the hope of substituting reason for violence in the management of affairs, and had aimed to find for the individual philosopher, in virtue or pleasure or elsewhere, a satisfaction to outweigh the inevitable ills of life. Every relation and incident of life was a subject of philosophical discussion, either from the pleasure it could afford, or the pain it was vulgarly supposed to cause. In this treatise Cicero, imitating Aristo of Ceos, endeavors to show that old age, usually considered one of the ills of life, is to the wise man deprived of its terrors. In form it imitates the Socratic or Platonic dialogue, the slight part taken in it by the other speakers serving only to give an air of reality, and to mark the divisions of the subject, while the name of Cato gives dignity and weight to the argument. The dialogue is put, apparently, in the last year of Cato's long life, and represents the old man discoursing, calmly and cheerfully, with the younger Scipio (AEinilianus), brother-in-law of Cato's elder son, and his friend Larlius, the same who gives his name to the dialogue on Friendship. Cicero himself was strongly attracted by some points of the old statesman's life and character, his plebeian birth, his political struggles, his intellectual eminence, and his genuine love of rural occupations.
