Book Child and Adolescent Development in Risky Adverse Contexts

Download or read book Child and Adolescent Development in Risky Adverse Contexts written by Blanca Estela Barcelata Eguiarte and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the factors and mechanisms involved in the development and adaptation of children and adolescents to adverse and risky contexts in four Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. The experience of growing up in contexts of poverty and social vulnerability is a risk factor for child and adolescent development which may produce a series of negative effects in their adulthood, including mental disorders. This is a global concern, but so far the majority of literature about the topic has focused on developed countries. This volume aims to enrich the international literature by presenting results of research carried out in developing countries, showing how children and adolescents deal with adverse and risky contexts and analyzing both negative outcomes and the development of resilience and coping strategies. The studies gathered in this volume are theoretically grounded on systemic and ecological models which analyze developmental trajectories and outcomes taking into account the interaction of different ecological systems, such as the individual, the family, the school and the wider society. Departing from this theoretical framework, the chapters in this volume analyze the risk factors posed to child and adolescent development by adverse and risky social contexts and present evidence-based interventions aimed at both preventing negative outcomes and helping children and adolescents develop coping strategies to deal with adverse situations, such as poverty and social marginalization. Child and Adolescent Development in Risky Adverse Contexts: A Latin American Perspective will be of interest to developmental, clinical, health, and educational psychologists, as well as social workers, directly working or doing research with children and adolescents in situations of social vulnerability.

Book Transitions and Transformations in Learning and Education

Download or read book Transitions and Transformations in Learning and Education written by Paivi Tynjala and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The breakneck speed of change in today’s societies creates enormous challenges for educational institutions at all levels. This volume explores ways how to manage change in educational processes and contexts, focusing, in particular, on the concepts of transition and transformation. How do we educate a skilled workforce, sensitive professionals and responsive citizens who are able not only to cope with change but also to adopt required roles as agents of change? How do we prepare students and employees to cope adequately with changes and transitions in their careers and personal lives? The first of this book’s three sections deals with the conceptual and theoretical aspects of transition, transformational processes and human development. It defines these concepts and examines the ways in which educational theory and praxis understand concepts of change and development. The second section presents empirical studies that offer differing perspectives on educational transitions, covering the lifespan from early years education to lifelong learning. The third part of the volume focuses on issues of learning and pedagogy and argues that educational practices should change with the changing world. With numerous concrete examples included in the analysis, and with studies taking a range of forms from personal histories to large-scale surveys, this new book is a major addition to the literature in a field that has key implications for our future. Book Learning in Classrooms

Download or read book Learning in Classrooms written by Mariane Hedegaard and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2001 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Vygotsky's ideas, this book contributes to the cultural-historical study of school children's learning. The focus is not only on activities within the classroom, but on the importance of various extraneous conditions, for example educational ideology that can influence both instruction and learning. The comprehensive material is presented under five headings: 'School Traditions and Learning' which includes chapters covering the problem of gender and special-needs education; learning strategies in elementary school; and ZPD in a schooling context. 'Educational Practice that Combines Community Knowledge and Social Science Studies' offers a look into dialogic research on learning about the Kobe earthquake; the cultural identity of minority children; a description of the way children in an inner-city youth program talk and think about science, and relating how the children were responsible themselves for a project involving the growing, harvesting and marketing of herbs, flowers and vegetables; the transforming of ethnocultural traditions in a modern environment. 'Everyday Knowledge and Mathematics and Physics Learning' considers cognition in the classroom and analyses the teacher/learner interactions that take place during a mathematics class, with special focus on the cultural-historical approach; and a study of learning activity in a Japanese mathematics classroom. 'Diversity in Learning Modes' examines how students become subjects of cooperative learning activity--here the strategies developed by girls seem to sustain 'mutual support', while the traditions that characterize the learning strategies of boys do not show the same level of cooperation; teacher-student interaction; the socio-moral self-concept of 12 year old Finnish children. 'Classroom Interaction and Discourse' covers the interactions between knowledge and school environment; understanding classroom practice; knowledge through childhood memories; and different ways of organizing salient and problematic action. This is an important book for teachers, administrators and others who want to know more about how teachers teach and children learn.

Book Affectivity and Learning

Download or read book Affectivity and Learning written by Pablo Fossa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an interdisciplinary approach to the study of affectivity and human learning by bridging the gap between neuroscience, cultural and cognitive psychology. It brings together studies that go beyond the focus on cognitive-intellectual variables involved in learning processes and incorporate the study of the role played by affectivity and emotions in learning not only at educational settings but in all processes of transformation and human development, thus presenting affectivity as a catalyst and mediator of all daily learning processes. Chapters brought together in this contributed volume present both theoretical contributions and results of empirical research from different disciplines, such as neuroscience, cognitive psychology, cultural psychology, educational psychology, developmental psychology and philosophy, and are grouped into five thematic sections. The first part of the book brings together chapters discussing different aspects of the role played by affectivity in learning processes from the perspectives of cultural, educational and developmental psychology. The second part is dedicated to the role of affectivity for teachers during their training as educators and during their pedagogical practice in diverse contexts. The third part focuses on the relationship between affectivity and learning from a neuroscientific point of view. The fourth part discusses affectivity and learning in therapeutic and clinical contexts. Finally, the fifth part brings together chapters about affectivity and learning in everyday life. By bringing together this rich interdisciplinary collection of studies, Affectivity and Learning: Bridging the Gap Between Neurosciences, Cultural and Cognitive Psychology will be a valuable resource for researchers in the fields of psychology, neuroscience and education, as well as for educators and teachers interested in knowing more about the relationship between affectivity and human learning.

Book Primate Cognition

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Tomasello
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1997-09-18
  • ISBN : 0190283033
  • Pages : 528 pages

Download or read book Primate Cognition written by Michael Tomasello and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-09-18 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after Charles Darwin formulated his theory of evolution, primate cognition became a major area of research. In this book, Michael Tomasello and Josep Call assess the current state of our knowledge about the cognitive skills of non-human primates. They integrate empirical findings on the topic from the beginning of the century to the present, placing this research in theoretical perspective. They begin with an examination of the way primates adapt to their physical world, mostly for the purpose of foraging. The second part of the book looks at primate social knowledge and focuses on the adaptations of primates to their social world for purposes of competition and cooperation. In the third section, the authors construct a general theory of primate cognition, distinguishing the cognition in primates from that of other mammals (human in particular). Their broad-ranging theory provides a guide for future research. Primate Cognition is an enlightening exploration of the cognitive capacities of our nearest primate relatives and a useful resource for a wide range of researchers and students in psychology, behavioral biology, primatology, and anthropology.
