En particular, pretende ser el texto de referencia para cursar esta asignatura en su modalidad semipresencial. El proposito principal de esta obra es capacitar al lector para elaborar modelos cuantitativos de situaciones propias del mundo empresarial y de las organizaciones, en especial en lo relativo a la organizacion del sistema productivo. Ademas, junto con otras dos obras de proxima publicacion, pretende introducir al lector en el contenido y el uso de tecnicas de investigacion operativa, que permiten la explotacion y resolucion de esos modelos cuantitativos. En primer lugar, se presentan los modelos cuantitativos y la investigacion opertiva; posteriormente se introduce una de las tecnicas mas extendidas y potentes de la investigacion operativa; la programacion lineal, y finalmente, se expone otra tecnica de investigacion operativa intimamente relacionada con la programacion lineal: la teoria de grafos. Puesto que se trata de un texto introductorio para estudiantes de segundo ciclo universitario, la obra se centra principalmente en la obtencion y explotacion de modelos cuantitativos, mas que en la formalizacion matematica de estos.

El primer modulo es de tipo introductorio y muestra el hilo conductor entre las tecnicas expuestas en el libro: se trata de obtener modelos del comportamiento de sistemas dinamicos, deterministas o estocasticos, en los que cabe la posibilidad de introducir elementos de decision. El segundo modulo muestra tecnicas de teoria de colas y contiene una introduccion a los modelos de colas exponenciales con servidores en paralelo. El tercer modulo desarrolla la teoria de las cadenas de Markov y aborda el analisis topologico y espectral y los procesos markovianos de decision. Finalmente, se introducen elementos de programacion dinamica y sus aplicaciones al entorno de la organizacion industrial.
