Download or read book The Methodology of Economics written by Mark Blaug and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-07-31 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an examination of the nature of economic explanation. The opening chapters introduce current thinking in the philosophy of science and review the literature on methodology. Professor Blaug then turns to the troublesome question of the logical status of welfare economics, giving the reader an understanding of the outstanding issues in the methodology of economics. This is followed by a series of case studies of leading economic controversies, which shows how controversies in economics may be illuminated by paying attention to questions of methodology. A final chapter draws the strands together and gives the author's view of what is wrong with modern economics. This book is a revised and updated edition of a classic work on the methodology of economics, in which Professor Blaug develops his discussion of the latest developments in macroeconomics, general equilibrium theory and international trade theory. A new section on the rationality postulate is also added.

The vast erudition of the author - who moves easily in many fields of the social and natural sciences - makes the book a mine of information and a valuable source of new ideas.' - Angelo Reati, Review of Political Economy 'This book will be a landmark in the history of economic thought. It is an extremely powerful and original critique of mainstream econometrics, based on a thorough knowledge of its historical origins and its contemporary applications. It will be essential reading for everyone involved in teaching or learning economic theory and model-building. The book also provides new insights into the work of Frisch, Keynes and Schumpeter . . . it is also a very important contribution to philosophy in the social sciences and in particular, to the development of evolutionary theory in economics. Download or read book The Economics of Creativity written by Pierre-Michel Menger and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creative work has been celebrated as the highest form of achievement since at least Aristotle. But our understanding of the dynamics and market for creative work--artistic work in particular--often relies on unexamined clichés about individual genius, industrial engineering of talent, and the fickleness of fashion. Pierre-Michel Menger approaches the subject with new rigor, drawing on sociology, economics, and philosophy to build on the central insight that, unlike the work most of us do most of the time, creative work is governed by uncertainty. Without uncertainty, neither self-realization nor creative innovation is possible. And without techniques for managing uncertainty, neither careers nor profitable ventures would surface. In the absence of clear paths to success, an oversupply of artists and artworks generates boundless differentiation and competition. How can artists, customers, entrepreneurs, and critics judge merit? Menger disputes the notion that artistic success depends solely on good connections or influential managers and patrons. Talent matters. But the disparity between superstardom and obscurity may hinge initially on minor gaps in intrinsic ability. The benefits of early promise in competition and the tendency of elite professionals to team up with one another amplify and disproportionately reward even small differences. Menger applies his temporal and causal analysis of behavior under uncertainty to the careers and oeuvres of Beethoven and Rodin. The result is a thought-provoking book that brings clarity to our understanding of a world widely seen as either irrational or so free of standards that only power and manipulation count.
Download or read book Evolution of Austrian Economics written by Sandye Gloria-Palermo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues, against the dominant orthodoxy in the history of economic thought, for the originality of Carl Menger's contribution to the development of the Austrian school of economics. Situating the evolution of Menger's thought in the tradition of classical political economy, the author documents the emergence of a Mengerian logic and its contribution to the formation of a distinctly Austrian tradition of economics. In its bold elucidation of the shaping of a tradition in economic thought, Tradition and Innovation in Austrian Economics provides a fresh and challenging perspective on the Austrian school which will be of interest to researchers in Austrian economics and the history of economic thought.
Download or read book Cognitive Autonomy and Methodological Individualism written by Francesco Di Iorio and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Di Iorio offers a new approach to Hayek’s Sensory Order, linking neuroscience to the old Verstehen tradition and to contemporary theories of self-organizing systems; this should be on the reading list of everyone who is interested in Hayek’s thought.” Barry Smith University at Buffalo, editor of The Monist “This impressive and well-researched book breaks new ground in our understanding of F.A. Hayek and of methodological individualism more generally. It shows that methodological individualism sanctions neither an atomistic view of society nor a mechanical determinism. The book carefully analyzes an important tradition in the social sciences, and compares it to many important philosophical, sociological and economic systems of thought. This is an enlightening book for all scholars interested in the methodological problems of the social sciences.” Mario J. Rizzo New York University “One of Hayek’s most important contributions is his linking of complex methodological individualism, which deals with the emergence of spontaneous orders and unintended collective structures in complex self-organizing social systems, with a cognitive psychology. What makes Francesco Di Iorio’s book of great interest is that, by building on Hayek’s seminal book The Sensory Order, it deepens the connections between cognition and rules of just conduct, taking into account relevant theories on subjectivity and consciousness such as phenomenology, hermeneutics and enactivism.” Jean Petitot École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, EHESS, Paris “In this thoughtful and enlightening book Francesco Di Iorio uses Hayek’s cognitive psychology as the starting point for investigation of the relationship between the autonomy of the agent and socio-cultural influences within methodological individualism. The book provides an illuminating and innovative analysis of a central issue in the philosophy of social science by setting Hayek’s view on mind and action in fruitful relation to approaches such as Gadamer’s hermeneutics, Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, Varela’s and Maturana’s enaction, Boudon’s interpretative sociology, Popper’s fallibilism and Mises’ praxeology. One of the most interesting aspects of this book is its argument that hermeneutics and fallibilism refer not to two different methods but to the same one.” Dario Antiseri Emeritus Professor at LUISS University, Rome “Francesco Di Iorio’s book explores, in an original way, the connections between Hayek’s methodological individualism and his fascinating idea that human mind is both an interpretative device and a self-organizing system. It is a brilliant, clearly written work, characterized by a certain intellectual courage, which makes a remarkable contribution to the sociology of knowledge.” Gérald Bronner Paris Diderot University
